Louis Vuitton S/S 2008 : Top Models by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot

Today's definition (not the 1992 definition) of a supermodel is a model who's developed enough of a reputation and an impressive enough portfolio that 5 or 6 years after their peak of success, they're still hired for big shows, campaigns and editorials.

Natalia especially has had countless features, full on multi-page articles about her career and her life in a few different magazines....if that doesn't warrant the term supermodel, I don't know what does.

 you can't take the term that seriously anymore, have you heard about Supermodel Caprice? Supermodel Sofia Vergara?:lol:

I can see what you mean but that's pretty much the definition of a Top Model, to be a Super you need to have more than a decent portfolio, you need to be a star, to have star appeal and the models of this century lack of that, the last model who took advantage of the concept was Gisele Bundchen.

Natalia has not even achieved the 10% of what Schiffer did so I don't think she deserve to be ranked as a Super with her in this Vuitton campaign. it would be Supermodels Stephanie, Claudia, Naomi and Eva + fashion models Angela and Natalia.

there are levels, I think ^_^ ;)

i love the 60s vibe of naomi's shot - goes with the car, and she looks so polished. stephanie looks great, if a little bit over-the-top trashy. and natalia is a doll.

Natalia and Angela have both been called "supermodels" by fashion icon US Vogue in print.
But this discussion is lame. Why can't we just focus on the ads, and maybe on the ETC's of the modeling world we can discuss if they are indeed worthy of those titles.

Eva Herzigova's and Stephanie Seymour's are definitely my favourite so far.

Naomi's shot looks like some sort of joke. Her pose (just laying there on a car) makes a very bad presentation of the clothes.

It gives the illusion that her outfit is really badly fitted.

Amen to that!

sorry but Vogue US has nothing to do in the making of a Supermodel, Elle MacPherson is a Supermodel and she barely was featured in Vogue Us, the same goes for others Supers who were never in Vogue US.

if Nati and Angie were called Supers by US Vogue it doesn't matter, they are still no Supers, a Supermodel is bigger than any magazine, brand or designer, that's why they are Supers.

1.
"Super". Informal An article or a product of superior size, quality, or grade.

saying that a model is "super" because Vogue called her that way is very laughable.

No, this entire debate on the definition on the term super model is laughable and pretty pointless.

and by the way Natalia and Angela are 'products'/modesl of great quality so they are supermodels.

bland argument, I will wait for a better contender :p

No, she's not, Natalia is a representative Top Model of the early 00's but really far form being a Supermodel, she has never had a household name like Claudia, Naomi, Cindy and the rest. the sames goes for Angela. ^_^
Natalia is ABSOLUTELY a household name in the UK.

Max2007, you are obviously set on proving your point, having the last word, etc. No rational argument will convince you otherwise. A silly little word "supermodel" is not a real definition, and leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Having an open mind is a key debating skill. Saying "I am right regardless of anything you have to say, silly people" is not. :innocent:

Now, back to the campaign. I think it's cheeky and campy - and I like it. But.... as many have mentioned, the SS08 runway concept was was far more exciting. I wish they'd stick to that idea. Seeing so many familiar faces is great regardless. And I am thrilled Ms. Moss isn't one of them. :ninja:

please stay on topic...
this thread is for the vuitton ad campaign...
there are threads on the 80s and 90s supers in the models etc. section...

I posted this on theimagist.com:

what about Kate? I thought

what about Kate? I thought you said she was going to be in these LV ads as well.

and Wayne from theimagist replyed the following:

My source says Kate was booked but apparently had scheduling conflicts.

Now, if I were them, I would've played with the colored highlights that the Prince designs on the bags had, you know, outline the girls and really make them look like cartoons, emphasize the sheer silliness of the clothes and photos...really go for it. If you're gonna do cliched and tacky, DO it, ya know?
First off...I love the ads so far.

Secondly, though...I really, really like your idea Spike! It makes so much more sense! Lots of colorful lighting, screens, and drawing on the photographs all incorporated together would make an awesome campaign. I kind of imagine them looking like the "Topsy-Turvy" editorial in W an issue or two ago.

Obviously, they'd have to be more colorful and vibrant, like the ads are now, but I think the colorblock lighting and screens give the photos a very illustrated quality...which I think would have been perfect for this campaign.

It would even be cool if instead of photographs, Richard Prince illustrated the ads!:woot:

^ I totally agree, dior. That's kind of what I would imagine them looking like too.

Then again the idea of illustrating an ad campaign of supermodels in a kitchy, pulp comic way would really bring a new level to LV's collaborations with artists....now I'm depressed. With all that could be done, this is what I get

I like the ads, but there's nothing "wow" about them. I agree about Naomi just lying there doing no justice to the clothing itself. Nat looks great though.
