A male model has been fired for eating a croissant whilst on a photo shoot for trendy clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch.

Belgian Florian Van Bael was told to leave the set when he was seen eating the pastry at what was considered to be an inappropriate moment.

The models on the photo shoot were supposedly put under strict supervision with agents monitoring what they ate, what they drank and how much they worked out.

Van Bael, 20, appears to have broken one of these rules and was fired.

The case illustrates that it is not just female models who are subject to harsh restrictions when it comes to their weight.

Fashion designers, including Victoria Beckham, have recently begun to shun ‘size zero’ models and this year New York Fashion Week hosted its first ‘plus size’ only fashion show.

The 30 male and female models were being shot by photographer Bruce Weber and the Panoramic Hotel in Montauk, New York when Van Bael was sacked.

The models were supposedly working 13-hour days on the orders of advertising agency Shahid & Co and paid far below the normal rates for seven days’ work - $2,500 for women (£1,570) and $1,500 for men (£940).

They were also given a $13 (£8) per day meal stipend but closely monitored on what they ate.

Van Bael's agent appeared to side with the advertising agency and criticised her client.
She said: ‘I don't think it's a question about coffee or croissant, it's just a question of respect during an important job.’

Van Bael is a rising star in the world of modelling and this summer was named model of the week by models.com.

Along with Abercrombie & Fitch he has modelled for high-profile designers including Viktor & Rolf.

what, was he performing open heart surgery or something?

I don't see how else eating a croissant could f up your job so much

Is the fashion world really so messed up or this is just an excuse to fire him? it sounds so childish...

Poor model. I'll get you a chocolate croissant dude....and I'll pick one up for me too while I'm at it. :innocent:

This is just plain stupid.I understand that they are very careful with what they eat during certain time before the shooting but how was a croissant going to make him fat right in the moment he was eating it?It's really not a decent excuse. This model could read the contract and see if it this thing was stipulated in his contract. If it wasn't,he could take legal actions. On the other hand, his behaviour doesn't show much professionalism.

Model Florian Van Bael Kicked Off Bruce Weber's A&F Shoot For Eating Carbs

Belgian model Florian Van Bael was fired from Bruce Weber's Abercrombie & Fitch catalog shoot in the Hamptons for — wait for it, wait for it — taking a bite of a croissant. Had he made it all the way through, he would've earned a pittance: of the 30 models on set, the men earn $1,500 for the seven-day shoot; women grab $2,500. Van Bael's own agent sided with Team Weber: "I don't think it's a question about coffee or croissant, it's just a question of respect during an important job." To which I say: While models, especially the barely clothed type A&F uses, of course have to look amazing, who the hell puts out croissants at craft services? That's just mean to the human hangars.

Yeah, don't feed this guy:

it said he ate it at the wrong moment which is understandable in a professional setting.

(not referring to this guy) but i've seen a few male models who like to goof around and it's cute but it gets to be too much sometimes.. i've been turned off by so many because of how they act not matter how good looking they are.

anyways, i wonder if the agency will still keep him.

I think "wrong moment" is the only way they can spin it so that it won't seem like the devil ate their souls & that now their shallow lives are dedicated to his bidding.

This is absolutely outrageous. Their eating is "monitored" carefully? What the hell kind of world is this? Can we find these people and ship them to Haiti or Kandahar or Fallujah for some much needed PERSPECTIVE?

And then can we just keep them there forever?

wtf! the modeling industry can be one heck of an irritating pain! I guess the client and the photog r gonna hav to pay with unwelcome controversy though

That is the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard.
Although, i could undserstand if A&F asked him to stop eating, and he argued and refused while shooting. something like that.
But if it's just because he wanted to eat a croissant, then let him eat the goddam croisant!
