in re: fullfrontal and Mutterlein's comments
Good points. Since the only Marc fans that I see on a regular basis are the type that go for the quirky accessories, a few Marc by Marc items or sift through the racks all over the place to come up with Marc inspired looks, it's good to get some perspective on the reality of the situation. I'm definitely guilty of giving the general mood of the shows more attention than the little details that you and birdofparadise mentioned. Having never spent time looking at what's really stocked, I made the assumption that the customers are swaying with the theme of the season rather than piecing together outfits of staples and a few key pieces. Which, as Mutterlein said, risks underestimating the loyal clients + MJ. If anything, I'd like to see this collection do well-- not just for Marc, but so that these sorts of looks trickle down and add some spark to the otherwise dull selections I see locally.
While typing that I thought of how clever the company's strategy of shifting the mood so much each season is. I, and others, have been fairly dismissive of some of the past layering/grunge etc. looks, but moving toward this more serious look, he catches our attention while presumably keeping his clients happy. He may lose me again next time, but I'm going to be back to see just what he's doing. And this'll go on ad infinitum because there'll be hope of deco or structure. Similarly, there were probably some people who were newly attracted to this spring. Maybe they dislike the new direction, but they're checking up on it. And so it goes. The more I think about it, and as much as I hate to admit it, that anti-niche brand strategy is pretty slick.
