Marc Jacobs F/W 07.08 NYC

I also see it's vintage ysl, but I can't help but thinking these clothes feel extremely dated.. they just feel old.

I guess he's after a more mature clientelle with the last season being so 'sweet' and before that very grung-y.

I'm not a fan.

totally agree. its like a bit late 80's and 90's YSL in color palette and shapes with some interesting art deco accents. a bit confusing but definitely old feeling. at least with the past collections there was a youthful air.

see, i can totally see these worked into a wardrobe. throw on that purple sequin top with a slick pair of jeans!? oh YAH! and that jacket over a mini dress from his m by MJ line? that is what makes me love marc! you are the determinate of the style, how you mix in his pieces with basics....and vintage...

I have to say, I enjoy the overall look, widebrim hat, tailored coat, mens trousers.....and some of the details were very interesting, most notably the squared off lapels on some of the jackets.

But I feel like this was a step back for him. It reminds me of 2001/2002 Marc Jacobs in the vintage sense of it, though this time around the pieces did look different somehow. Still, after a few seasons of his experimentation, I feel slightly underwhelmed.

Still, the girls did look terribly chic.

I do hope this new pulled together look doesn't predict what will come in the coming weeks, it's too soon for the whole "ladylike" thing to come back.

This is better than his usual but his usual is so crap this is still bad.

I can't believe it, I like it! This is the first time I see Marc Jacobs and think "Oh my God!" instead of "Oh dear God...".
Excuse me, I need to go into a corner and revaluate my entire existence.

Not perfect but still masterful

The looks that stood out and actually defined the show the most for me were on the models with the blue hair. There was a sense of a decided refinement, not about the manor born but a woman...who for however long a moment and for whatever reason needs to feel in control, who is trimming the fat. There was a vulnerability there, a sense of escapism and, as a statement on sportswear, a denial of Europe (the salon doors notwithstanding): no frills, no lace, dark sequins, ribbons out of scale, the Chanel influences jettisoned, 'clean & clear and under control'...

I love these hats. That is all.

(but when I wear hats everybody asks me if I'm feeling okay because I look so sick...why! Cruel world!)

I actually like this collection, especially the hats and the 80's inspiration.

lol...this is not 80s...i lived through the 70s and 80s, this reminds me YSL and dior circa 1975, at that time the 20s,30 and 40s were big influences and this time around he did the same but referencing the 30s/70s... 80s fashions were horrid my god....:yuk: ..

I see people saying "I usually don't like Marc's designs but this collection is good" and I'm suprised to see so many people don't like him

i agree 100%. In my opinion, Marc girls think about the concepts and the clothes and can have a vision of transforming the runway looks into streetwear. i think the truly creative and fashion forward will have a fun time working with pieces from a new style. it certainly is different from the mini shift dresses, skin tight pants, 60's style looks that have been around. while i dont think i am personally ready for this abrupt change, i think in about 6months to a year when I am tired of everything else I will be happy to see something else

^^^^^^^^^^the whole mod squad /80s new waver look is zzzzzzzzzzzz tired its been dominating the scene for almost 3 years now ...its time for a change.........

wow, I really didn't expect this either. . .

There are some of the pieces that I really don't like, but overall - Beautiful
I think it will grow on me...

It's still not hitting the right note for me.... It just doesn't seem 'Marc' to me. It's Miu Miu, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, anything but Marc Jacobs. I guess I just got used to the last two seasons? Before Fall '06, Jacobs' collections looked a lot different than they do now. But what about his trademark! There's no grunge or layering anywhere!

Now I'm going to look at the accessories....

just came across this 40s-50s cocktail dress on ebay which has a somewhat similar technique as his evening wear...

I like this, but primarily because it's nothing I can see my imaginary Marc customer wearing. As others have mentioned, as always, if you sit down with it, you can spot influence after influence, but at least this time around, they're looks/trends that appeal to me. I don't have the depth of fashion history knowledge to pick up on a lot of it, but at times it seems like a less precise version of this spring's Miu Miu blended with some Erte illustrations.

This is all great in theory, but (and I know this could come across as snooty) is the average Marc customer really going to be able to adapt these looks and the old time elegance/rigidity that they conjur up for real life? Someone else hinted at it, but I'd imagine that most women who are already doing just that aren't shopping with Marc. They're already at YSL or Jil or picking and choosing Prada pieces etc. Many of whom already dismiss Marc as a thrift store copy cat. Marc's prices aren't exactly cheap, so I'd imagine it would be hard to win this new audience and possibly difficult to sell this to the current one. Or, maybe I'm just confusing the Marc by Marc girl with a more subtle MJ woman that passes under my radar.

Also, and I've not taken the time to digest the individual pieces yet, but does Marc expect his customers to buy new wardrobes every season? It doesn't seem like much of this would blend with anything he's done previously. That's good in some respects, but would have to be frustrating for the ladies who frequent the shops.

I think you underestimate him. Marc's customers are varied and diverse but they all are loyal and share a certain understanding. I don't really see anything in this collection they will be aversed to. And if you look at his past 6 shows you can see that while the mood changes drastically each season he always offers fairly classic and easily styled pieces. The coats, the trousers, even the shoes. It's all sure to be a hit in stores.

I love, love, LOVE this and I wasn't expecting to at all. It's so classy...almost film noir. :o I'm officially at a loss for words here.

I agree, I think, if anything, his customer is someone who loves fashion and who dresses for other women. The collections, even when they are a drastic change from the season before always reference, in some way, work he's done in the past. He's keeping up a dialogue with the people who love to wear his stuff, keeping consistent elements (brass buttons, zips, color play).

wow! nice spot tinuviel!!

AMAZING!! TOTALLY AMAZING!!! and so unsespected... now that i was getting bored of his homeless-romantic collections he brings this collections that really feels like fresh air!! i love the colors, textures, proportions, accesories (BIG JEWELS!!) and the setting too!!
bravo!! i've seen nothing yet and i can already call this one of my fav.
