Seriously considered staying up for the live feed, glad I didn't.

Must say that overall they've tried way harder this time, and I like that. May not prefer many of the looks myself though.

Where's my beloved Coach???????

Most disappointing, meaning I actually expected more:
This was supposed to be Madonna's domain. You can tell by the sheer amount of detail that went into that look that she believed it too. Failed, I'm afraid. I think the droopy skirt around her waist looks sloppy, especially for a woman of her age. And no to the juvenile braids. Other than that I'm actually quite into it.
Tracee Ellis Ross also disappointed big time. Southern socialite going to an 80s MET gala is not a great look for 2018. At least she never does things in halves - Tracee even nailed the hair and makeup!
Kerry Washington - hair seemed fine if not a bit much, but the dress? A bit tame. It's basically just nothing. Not even mediocre like Doutzen or Irina. This is another in a series of 'falling off the wagon' looks from Kerry where I'm beginning to wonder whether she deserves the sartorial praise which people lavish on her.
Rihanna is usually a big trump card for theatrics, must say I'd have preferred the pearly Moschino on her instead of Cardi B. God, couldn't cringe enough at the latter's poses, always looking so vulgarly noveau riche. The main issue with Rihanna's dress was that it's for suited to her shape.
The Gucci trio. It lived up to its 'so bad it's good' vibe, but I expected more. Maybe Michele just wasn't feeling it. Leto's Jesus was very lame, sorry. I expected a quirky, but hot Jesus.
SJP. In D&G, probably Alta Moda? Zzzz. I'm not sure whether it's because this D&G aesthetic feel so omnipresent, but getting strong deja vu vibes here.

Dark horses:
I actually didn't expect anything from Kim because she never really comes to play, but 'sin in Versace' was the brand's best offering all night. The rest, I mean, SZA looking like a swan (or a fowl), Migos in D&G from a few seasons ago, and Chadwick, whose outfit seemed clearly too much for him?
Another surprising favourite is Juliettte in Balmain! Didn't expect it from either to win me over, but they did.
Same goes for Sasha Lane, who I can't abide, in Tory Burch. There's something ethereal about that look.
Princess Euggenie, not bad....

Absolute worst:
Katy Perry, lmao, what a pillock.
Shailene Woodley left me speechless!!
I don't know who Liza Koshy is but,. Buttons look skew, glitter belt, and really cheap-looking booties.
Lena Waithe's eyeroll inducing cape trying to score more brownie points with the SJWs. Of course she had to go political. But even that aside, it's still ugly as sin.
Frances McDormand - colour looks terrible, and her vibe was way too try-hard for this look.
Olivia Munn in something which would've looked spectacular on Kim/JLo/Beyonce.
Amal Clooney!!!
Michael B Jordan looked terrible. Proportions are off in a bad way. Those pants actually highlight the fact that he doesn't have athletic calves instead of disguising it.

The winners:
What impressed me most was how the hair and beauty detail took precedence over fashion dressing for a change. Tessa Thompson, Kate Bosworth, Janelle, Priyanka Chopra, Diane Kruger, Lily Collins, and even Blake. Their dresses imo were crap, but one can't deny from the neck up they looked amazing. Especially next to the cheap lip colour Kim and Jlo went for, crikey!
I think for once the severity of Rooney Mara actually came in handy. Glad to see her in Givenchy, it's a nod of confidence to Clare that Tisci's regulars are still on board. Especially considering Rooney isn't an official spokesperson.
Alek Wek, definitely! Those colours look glorious on her skin.
The Olsen twins also won yet again, great accessories, and thank God Ashley schooled Lena Waithe in the rainbow cape how to properly work a toga/cape.
I want to like Greta Gerwig's look as well, but there's something missing. Statement accessories, perhaps? Because a simple statement necklace saved Andreea Diaconu's look.
I liked Amanda Seyfried's dress as well. Should've been in ivory to play more to the virtuous strength. Although that would be somewhat ironic considering her past.....
Also, most of the Prada women looked stunning!
Both Anna and Kris Jenner looked passable, but the halter element with both dresses looked really silly. Also Kris' ostritch detail should've been lowered.
Taylor Hill, actually.
Imaan. I normally hate Posen's ott campiness, but Imaan brought the drama with this one. Her beauty helped a lot as well.

The usual suspect staying true to form:
I'm so over the LV squad that their offensive outfits don't even bother me anymore. They're all, spokesperson and Nicolas quite vulgar because it's just another advertising effort for them. Only now we're to add Saint Laurent to the list. And if people think Alicia was the best dressed? Nicolas probably just dropped some bib on one of his usual LV trainwrecks and went 'There, you're good to go!' She looked so awkward. And what's up with Ruth Negga's make up?
I didn't dislike the Saint Laurent looks. Very basic, but not suited to this event.

The ones who as usual missed the memo:
Bella Hadid looking more superhero villain. Unless she's supposed to be a mythical sorceress of sort?
Bea Schaffer. It's baffling to me how she consistently gets it wrong. Bea is one of the very few women at this event who could actually get her hands on archival Balenciaga, Gaultier or Lacroix.
Irina Shayk. Obviously. I don't think she ever read or understand the memo.
Adwoa looking like The Joker, or Poison Ivy, or a cross between the two? I'm confused.

All the toxins, out. Off to my morning swim.

Literally no one has style here. No personality, either.

And I honestly hate this Glam-Squad look everyone has. Everyone is a clone. Not a hair out of place, “flawless” skin, contoured and highlighted to high heaven to the point where you barely look recognizable as a human. It's so not fashion. It’s disturbing, actually.

a lot of people just added a halo or cross to be on theme

:lol::lol::lol:
Yes, to be fair, in some cases it actually defined a look. Andreea wore this slim fitting black sequined dress, but with the cross it actually looked quite understated while still on theme.

But agreed regarding the halolujah madness!

Would anyone be able to tell me - do the celebrities request a designer or does the designer offer to dress them for the event? Is it sort of a decision between both parties what the outfit is/would it actually be possible for a celebrity to straight out request gaultier ss07 couture?

This isn't as much need-to-know but I'm wondering does anyone know if there is a preference from design houses to have the celebrities in new outfits vs archive pieces or do you think it doesn't really matter? Thanks everyone!

To me, Madonna is the ultimate winner here...
Her outfit is dramatic and detailed yet somehow subtle and sombre slightly bone-chilling... I think Rihanna's outfit is a bit OTT...

It depends.. I think if it's someone like Madonna who has worked with Jean Paul for decades, she could absolutely ask for SS07 Haute Couture.

Some celebrities can request designers (someone like Beyonce, Rihanna or even Madonna). In Madonna's case, Gaultier is a part of the exhibit and was invited so i guess they choose each other. But for others, it's really about fashion houses choosing who they wants to dress.

The thing about archive Couture pieces (and even more recent ones like Gaultier) is that big brands have to play with the rules of Haute Couture. If a Couture client asked for the exclusivity of the design or if a design from the collection is in the exhibit, you can't really expect from someone to just wear it.

And the Met is also a great ad for fashion houses so, people who are invited by the houses are expected to wear something by the current designer or in cases like Dior, Valentino, Versace or YSL pieces by the founder. The only exception is maybe Chanel because they have the same designer for 35 years...

I think it works both ways. The LV women, Selena in Coach, Jared Leto in Gucci, these were quite obvious because we're all aware of the partnership in place. Cardi B may have been invited by Scott as early as NYFW. But I suspect Solange, SJP, Amal, Tracee Ellis Ross would employ their stylists to seek out a designer since their not tied to any specific brands.

As for the question re archival pieces, it absolutely matters. It's rather complex because fashion seems driven so much by ego. While some brands probably would oblige, I doubt whether most current designers would allow an actress to wear an archival piece by a previous designer, unless he/she was the founder. It's certainly very rare. Imagine any of the LV ladies in one of Marc Jacobs' dresses, or Kate Moss in a Hedi SLP number? That would never happen! In part it makes sense because these two brands, like many, are so obsessed with setting a tone for their current direction promoting previous designers. It's a strategy, after all.
I would say the higher up the food chain the celeb is (in terms of fashion connections, appeal or critical acclaim), the more easier it would be for her to secure an archival piece.

People can complain but at least it was a very interesting red carpet.

The worst for me was Rihanna, way over the top and looks like she squeezed into someone else's dress, JLo and Mary J Blige, no words, Taylor Hill that came dressed for Halloween as sexy cardinal ( the make up was amazing though) and Gisele and Co that look like game show hosts.

I really like the Gucci gang, they are on the right side of tackiness, Madonna, pity the skirt looks a bit cheap, Kate Bosworth, love the ridiculous head covering, and the best of the best for me was Francis McDormand, very stylish and the Olsen Twins, my favourites of the night.

Can't hate on the YSL squad because that's probably what i would choose to dress if i was a millionaire on the red carpet:lol:, but i can see it's not appropriate for this particular event.

Forever impressed by all these celebs who managed to wear the same crap year after year regardless of the theme

You're right, I like that way more people at least tried this time around. In their own small way, but at least it wasn't a borefest.

Celebrities are insecure. Their fear is to be on the worst-dressed list. That's why even at a real fashion event like the Met, we still the basic Redcarpet looks we can get everywhere.
