Model Casting S/S 11

A Katie Grand exclusive is really dumb. I thought Bambi Northwood-Blyth was one? then why is she also a Balenciaga exclusive
Katie Grand in London. Balenciaga in Paris.

Well at least it seems Jil Sander got off the exclusive train at the right moment, even though hers were always considered 'the curse'. I don't think she's had any for the last couple of seasons. I do miss the days when it was just Calvin, Jil, Prada/Miu Miu, and 3 girls max. Every house doing them, and 5+ at each show, obviously makes it all irrelevent.

^Oh... that's even sillier than I expected. I thought she was a Katie exclusive throughout.

^I didn't mean that the closing was significant :) I was noting that although the cast seemed diverse, it was mainly because of this last grouping of models (Those were the girls' only looks). Joan was the only one who got a separate look to herself.

does anyone know who is the casting director for these shows:
Ermanno Scervino, Gianfranco Ferre, Blumarine, Dolce & Gabban and Iceberg?

^Ferre is Maida/Rami, Blumarine is Caterina Matteuchi, and I believe Dolce is in-house (A Brazilian), though it used to be Paolo Turina. I think Iceberg changed things up this season so I'm not 100% sure now.

Way Models posted that Shirley Mallmann will also walk for John Galliano and Emanuel Ungaro :)

I'm kind of tired of the word exclusive. Everything's so over-hyped these days when it comes to castings. All the brands are trying to outdo each other in terms of casting. In the end it doesn't necessarily make a casting better when there's a Miranda Kerr or Gisele Bundchen walking the show.

The term exclusive itself lost its luster. I mean we have a Calvin Klein exclusive, Proenza Schouler exclusive, Prada exclusive, Balenciaga exclusive, Miu Miu exclusive and even a Katie Grand exclusive, there's no end to it :ninja:
All these conceptual castings are ruining the "art" of modeling. A designer picks their gout de la saison and the casting designer caters to these specific preferences, i.e. dark-haired/hardcore edgy/uniform blonde/whatever floats their boat. It's quite meaningless with regards to talent or personality, a girl fits in the shows flavour or not. Casting directors might seem like the ones in charge of making or breaking a models career which would be bad enough, but are they really?

French 80's model Inès de la Fressange will be walking for Chanel this Tuesday (5). Inès was Chanel's first exclusive model, being the maison face for many years. She's also expected to be on the ad campaing with Stella Tennant and Freja Beha Erichsen.

I agree with the idea behind the comment, "a designer picks their gout de la saison and the casting designer caters to these specific preferences, i.e. dark-haired/hardcore edgy/uniform blonde/whatever floats their boat," but designers have not done this for years, if not decades. For years, the pattern has been that the same 10-15 girls are booked for the big shows, the thing was that many of those It girls came on the scene via taste makers like Meisel and Miuccia Prada. When it came to Prada, Russell Marsh cast a wide net for her type of girl and the agencies stocked their boards with a huge supply, so even if in the end she chose only a few girls, the model boards reflected her taste; but then she's been getting dotty and the old girl is not as easy to pin down as she used to be.

Also in recent seasons, Tisci has clearly emerged as taste maker and is probably on par with Miuccia, but his taste is not as monochromatic and scientific as Miuccia's, it ranges from Mariacarla to Daphne to Joan. Meisel is still a taste maker, but not in quantity and I am not sure if he ever was one when it came to quantity, what is probably becoming more important is that being rejected by Meisel is not the kiss of death a la Freja and Lindsey. It looks like IMG has realized that quirky is nice and all, and they have not rejected that look entirely, but they've also concluded that the next generation of contract and cover girls need to be developed; interestingly the other player who seems to have recognized this, and for whatever reason does not get a lot of credit, is Chris Gay and the folks over at Marilyn.

Yes there has been some blatant stunt casting, Giles being one and Hakaan being the other. To me the 'off the street' portion of the cast at Balenciaga's was more of a stunt than the 'archival' portion, but bith sides of Balenciaga's casting came off to me as more 'thoughtful' gimmickry than cheap gimmickry.

At least when the top walker / newcomer lists come out at the end of this season it will be more eclectic that it has been in recent years, although the move toward an eclectic mix of it girls probably started last season.

i miss my natasha...
I have definitely missed Natasha yet for the most part I've been pretty sanguine about it, but I am actually disturbed by her absence from Dior; not too sound too facetious, but a bunch of skinny, white girls shaking their ***es is the house that Natasha built.

Whether the Balenciaga casting was thoughtful or cheap gimmickry, I think in the end it was very gimmicky and not necessary. The street casting story was just made up because it sounds very cool. Or so they think.

I've always very much enjoyed Balenciaga castings in the past. I liked how they used Miranda Kerr in the show a couple of seasons ago, mostly because at first I didn't really notice it was Miranda. And in the end they didn't make such a big deal out of it.

Wait, so Karl isn't mad at Ines anymore?

Thana's absence at Dior was a major disappointment

Thana Kuhnen (tha-na koo-nen)
1. Dior
2. Dior Haute Couture
3. A fierce and elegant being

Did anyone notice the a-list casting at Pedro Lourenco? I've never heard of him before. A bit unexpected. Could be one of the major casting directors that have taken over the show.

^ Last season he had a strong cast as well. Any info on who does his casting?

Last season the Pedro Lourenco casting was done by Kannon Rajah, I think he did it this season too. More importantly perhaps, the show was styled by Brana Wolf

For me personally I find the whole, 'let's take a VS model and straighten her hair and bleach her eyebrows' far more gimmicky and manipulative than a model looking like herself. Sasha, Natalia, Karlie, Magdalena, Iris, Lindsey et. al., have distinctive looks that, for the most part, no one tries to camouflage - come on, that is such an ANTM / Tyra Banks move! A caveat, if we are referring to a runway show, of course the model should be styled according to the look of the show, but to me casting and restyling Miranda when she made her Balenciaga debut is as much if not more gimmicky than Miranda's SS2011 appearance, pregnancy and all. I am not saying that she was not qualified for either show, but so were a thousand other girls.

My thing is that when I looked at the SS 2011 Balenciaga show, however which way they got there, with two exceptions, the cast fit the collection and the mood. I guess I am the opposite when it comes to Balenciaga shows and I'll throw in their campaign casting too, because while I won't say that I was blown away by the SS 2011 cast, to me Balenciaga in recent seasons has been awkward girl central and to me this season the disconnect was not as acute, although to be honest I think that the theme allowed for a lower bar when it comes to casting, so while there were some impressive names on the list and you also had the real or faux 'off-the-street' angle and despite the PR spin, this was not a difficult collection / show to cast.

Regarding the exceptions, one minor exception was Jamie Bochert keeping her signature center part in her hair.... oh yeah, it looks like Meisel has the inside track on shooting the SS 2011 campaign. And the model who really did not fit the Balenciaga show was Gisele and that was not because of her looks, but because of her walk - for some reason she decided to do a full-on VS walk, which I thought was hilarious because she did not walk that VS when she was at VS(!) - that chick's hips were swaying and that pony-tail was swinging and I was all, 'you go girl!' and then when I calmed my *** down I realized that that was totally out of sync with what had gone on before. :D But as others have pointed out, she has a history with the house.

OK was Shena Moulton casts for Sonia Rykiel* five minutes before the show(?), that is sooo one of these things is not like the other! I guess I will just say, "bless their hearts," and hope that one day they get it right.

*Just scroll down and look at the thumbnails, she is the 20th something model out.
