Model's Age - How Young Is Too Young?

What's the problem to start at 18 years old? when you are mature and u have finished the school, i really don't like children with woman dresses.. i don't like girls who left school to model.. there are many 25 years old girls who are still doing very well, and absolutely they are not OLD! if u have 6 year of good career modeling it s not bad at all.. what s the point starting at 13? At 13 people should play sport and go to pijama parties!

i've been brought there from the latest Vogue Paris thread (dec 2010 - jan 2011), and i just wanted to rephrase what i've read about Inez ...
Inez & Vinoodh NEVER cast a girl who's under 18 yrs old and who's never had sexual intercourse ...

i wanted to let people who didn't know about that (like me) know ...

* see the article about Inez in Gentlewoman # 2

that's refreshing! at least about the 18 and over part. haha, "sooooo.... are you a virgin?" seems like kind of an awkward casting question.

how is it any of their business if someone has had sex?
so many people have sex before 18 - it's not illegal (obviously i'm talking about normal cases of a boyfriend-girlfriend around the same age, not statutory r*pe)
and the age of consent is different all over the world.

Hmm... I think 14 would be too young, too young to be molested by photographers and old fashion people. 15 would be a good age to start modeling high fashion

i don't know if their reason is related to my opinion about making love. but to me, making love means feeling comfortable with / being aware of your body, so you probably move in front of the camera with more ease ....
:ninja::innocent:

Oh.. so they want a girl who HAS had sex? I thought you meant a girl who hadn't.
But still.... it's really none of their business :ninja: and shouldn't dictate if a girl is cast or not.
Discriminating against age I understand, but whether or not someone has had sex... no.

The phrase from the interview is:
"I have hours of Inez's recorded speech on file from the various phone interviews we've done together. Fascinating gems like why she prefers not to cast anyone under the age of eighteen who hasn't had sex yet for a fashion photograph, and highly quotable musings on whether the armpit is more beautiful to photograph than the nostril."

When a model steps in front of a camera it's not just about being professional and giving someone what they want (not always). Remember how it felt taking your seat for the annual school picture and hoping it would be flattering? Inez & Vinoodh take a fashion picture like a portrait (Inez talks about this in the interview too) and so for the model it requires a complete surrender to the eye of the camera. When you feel uncomfortable the photographer sees it, the camera registers it. If you're not comfortable you can't hide it. It makes me think a model has to find strength in this type of vulnerability. I think it's also why I&V are very loyal to certain models and vice versa. Imo BerlinRocks put it well, making love is about feeling totally comfortable with your body. I suppose the experience makes it easier for a person to find comfort in vulnerability and the natural movement of the body?

P.S. I highly doubt it's about the notion of sex itself. I can't imagine they would ask the girls flat out at a casting if they have any experience. I think it's just a generalisation and they decided to draw the line at 18.

The age should depend on what they're modelling for. A 14 year old modelling for a Christmas catalogue is appropriate; it's cute and represents the girl well. A 14 year old modelling lingerie is inappropriate, no matter how many layers of makeup you plaster on her. It's bad representation.

A 14-year-old fashion models fakes whatever sexual ecstasy she is told to fake.

jezebel

Daphne Groeneveld is a Dutch model who was born on December 25, 1995. Groeneveld, who's leaning against Ford in a kind of sexual faint, is posed and made up to look like another, more famous model — Lara Stone, who at 26 is old enough to make looking at her O-face in a magazine not disturbing. But that's fashion: one girl works, and then, magically, younger versions of her start getting promoted through the industry's ranks.

So many girls look just like what fashion wants at age 14, then grow up in a few years with boobs and hips. Unless they take extreme measures, urged on by agents who have invested a lot of time and money in them, their career is over.

What is the effect of being thrown on the trash heap on young teenagers?

What is the effect of doing what Kim Noorda did, which is often the other alternative?

Agencies frequently lie about the age of models, so it's hard to be sure. Addison and Toni were 16 until their age was reset a couple of years later, because they were originally 14 (hard to believe in Toni's case).

In this case Jezebel gives nymag as their source, and I have no idea if that is accurate.

word from people who know her, or have friends that know her, she's born in '94.

nymag is often wrong and use agency-supplied date-of-births. i don't know why people think they are some sort of authority - and I don't mean you - I just mean in every thread with a false age, people defend it by saying 'but nymag says...'.

The thing is, if the agency tells the model to lie about her age, she and her family have to lie too. I don't blame them either. There is no good source for a model's age, except sometimes a newspaper article in her home country.

I have meant to look back at Austria too, to see if that birthday cake with 16? candles before the e-show she was on was her real age.

Actually, I think in this case, nymag just got it plain wrong, as in, not even agency-supplied..... they are the only 'source' who say she's 14.

With Union she started out as 15 (Jan '10)... but in this video with Vogue Italia she claims to be 16 (and that was April/May '10), most likely under the instruction of Women Milan.

So it seems most likely, to me at least, that she is 15.

Well and also Jac was also born in 1994 and nowadays everyone forgot about her age, even though she's been doing editorials similar to this for quite a while (I think she's already done 4 season of shows...) :innocent:

I just realized something odd, very young teens are casted to sell women's clothing.. yet in American teen shows (Glee, 90210, Gossip Girl).. older actors (who are sometimes in their 30's) are casted to portray teens

.. just thought that was .. interesting

That is because, unlike models, actors have a union. I was accompanying a group of models acting as models in a movie and since one was 15, she required different breaks and her dinner couldn't be postponed without special permission. The models 16 and under couldn't work after 8 p.m. because of the hours they had already worked that day (which annoyed them since the rest of the models were paid a higher rate at that point and were just standing around watching the AD's monitor).

The models were so amazed by the good treatment and the catering.

Toni was 14???!!!
So, she was 15 when vogue italia topless ed came out, and probably 14 when it was shoot  how old is she now?? 17?

I agree with you stefanelle.
Jac has been showing her breasts every season sinse her first season. And designers seems to love put transparent clothes on her. pretty shocking

^ I think it's because Jac has mature breasts for her age, no?

Toni was 15 when first she started out. So, she was at least 16 during that VI shoot.
I won't say this makes the situation much better though...
