Stefano Pilati presents men's collection on the big screen

(NEW YORK) Stefano Pilati, who as previously reported has chosen to forego a traditional runway show for his YSL Fall 2008 men's collection, will instead present his highly anticipated looks through an innovative video installation and customized showrooms of product, The Daily has learned. According to a spokesman, "his idea is to make the experience of seeing a collection more intimate, to reduce the distance between the viewer and the collection."
The collaboration Pilati has entered into consists of a unique video produced with directors Sarah Chatfield and Chris Sweeney of the London-based music video production company Colonel Blimp. The video features acclaimed British actor Simon Woods, who serves as the protagonist and model on whom the collection is viewed.
The video will premiere this Wednesday evening in Paris at an invitation-only showing at the YSL showroom at 16 rue d'Artois, followed by a dinner Pilati is hosting for top global press and VIPs at Apicius, the Michelin-rated French restaurant owned by chef Jean-Pierre Vigato housed in an 18th-century mansion near the Champs-Elysées.

If Yves Saint-Laurent’s Fall 2008 men’s wear collection debuts on a video instead of on the catwalk, does it exist? According to Stefano Pilati, the YSL designer behind the forthcoming threads, the answer is a resounding “yes.” The Daily reports today that instead of unveiling the collection in the tradition way—elevated walkway, lots of cameras, Anna Wintour in the front row—Mr. Pilati has decided to show it off on the big screen.
A representative for the fashion label said, “[the designer’s] idea is to make the experience of seeing a collection more intimate, to reduce the distance between the viewer and the collection.”
The video installation, created with directors Sarah Chatfield and Chris Sweeney of the London-based music video production company Colonel Blimp, will premiere this Wednesday in Paris alongside “customized showrooms of product.” Even more unconventionally, the video features British actor Simon Woods as the collection’s only model—a protagonist of sorts.
Woods appeared in a triptych video that YSL designer Stefano Pilati did in lieu of a runway show, and which you can catch on Monday on the YSL site, YouTube, and Showstudio, among others. The film was effective, particularly in capturing the rich, crystal-like colors and the contemporary attitude. I liked the clothes: those ruddy tweed coats with soft cotton henleys; the tie-dyed velvet blazers (think crushed velvet) with wide, old-school English-y tweed trousers; the stiff jackets and biker jackets in a new Japanese rain-repellant felt; the fuzzy-curly coats vaguely hinting of the 70s. One of my favorite looks was a collarless navy blazer edged in grey flannel. Nearly always when I see a Pilati men’s show I think, Why can’t he do this piece or that piece for women? There is—how shall I put it?—more peculiarity with his men’s shows than his women’s. Not more finesse but a natural expressiveness, registered best in his choice of fabrics.
