Rachel Zoe’s Fashion Line Will Hopefully Hang Next to Diane Von Furstenberg’s and Alexander Wang’s in Fine Department Stores
Rachel Zoe won't be in town for New York Fashion Week. She recently made her last trip to New York (or anywhere else) for some time to show her fashion line to WWD and style a shoot for the paper. The clothes, made in partnership with Li & Fung, are positioned in the contemporary market, ranging in price from $250 for a day dress to $700 for a full suit. These are not your wear-once-and-throw-away celebrity-"designed" cork and pleather platforms. And these will probably not be followed by a line of temporary tattoos or fake tongue rings. Zoe's clothes are positioned in the same category inhabited by Alexander Wang and Diane Von Furstenberg, and it's next to those designers that they will ideally hang on sales floors. Li & Fung's chief strategy officer explains, "We felt that [contemporary] is her audience. She’s already done something affordable for QVC."
And why not go high-end? If there's something that doesn't make sense, it's Rachel Zoe going mass with cheap plastic jewelry and disposable underpants. The woman doesn't grocery shop much less touch a toe in somewhere like Macy's, unless she makes secret shopping trips to pilfer sale bath robes when the Bravo cameras aren't around. High-end is her image, her thing, her love, and where anything she makes should most naturally fit. Whether her audience is in the position to enjoy, first-hand, the finer things, just as she does, will be seen. Or maybe, like Jessica Simpson's lines, hers will be appealing enough independent of their name association to sell in droves.

As for the pieces themselves, Zoe says, "I’d imagine everybody is expecting something from me that’s kind of a Seventies, uberboho-glam kind of thing, and, you know, very accessorized. And it’s not." Pieces include lots of suiting; flared legs that reach over a platform shoe to the floor (a very Donatella Versace look); sequin cardigans; capes with leather trim and toggles; thigh-high boots; layered organza evening gowns; and what WWD calls a "le smoking-esque" jumpsuit. So maybe what Zoe means is just that the caftans are missing and maybe a fur vest or two since QVC has dibs on her vision of those.
As buyers look at the line, her empire shall continue to flourish with her client Anne Hathaway hosting the Oscars, whose every outfit change and boob taping Zoe will oversee, at eight months pregnant. And then there's the fourth season of The Rachel Zoe Project, in which a brunette named Mandana appears to have been cast as Brad's replacement. She has some very nicely toned thighs to fill indeed.
