Rosary Is Not Just A Fashion Item

They're just beads...
Church didn't invent beads...
There's no disrespect...

to some of us, the rosary holds a significane and if it is been displayed or missued without it been used for the purpose of the rosary(to pray with) then it's sad. it shows how low fashion can really go, it was the same kind of issue with roberto cavali and some hindu images.

I agree with what As You Like It said on the first page but at the same time, there are so many more important issues going on in the world for the Catholic Church to have a strong view on than whether David beckham wears a necklace or not....

Oh, I'll agree the Catholic church has more issues than a newstand, and frankly, I am not that invested into this or any of their battles; I'm a godless infidel (my preferred terminology) and so my opinions on religion are pretty moot.

I'm strongly in favor of respecting the traditions of estblished religions, of new religions, and of promoting knowledge and understanding of all religions through interfaith/comparative religion study as part of language-arts/history/social-studies in the schools.

It would help eliminate dismissive and disrespectful attitudes toward various religions and help people make more educated and informed choices about what and how they believe and express their beliefs.

As a Catholic, I do take offense when I see someone wearing rosaries around their neck... it's not just beads! It's a method of prayer and is considered sacred- i.e. if you drop them on the ground after they have been blessed, you have to kiss them... please, just consider- how would you like it if I went and got a few stars of david and wore those all over? or a similar religious symbol?

personally i wouldn't mind. these items are no longer simple religious artifacts, they are a cultural product. it's like jazz or rap music. although its roots are uniquely african american, it does not prevent others from enjoying and/or creating it. if it's something desireable then people are going to want a part of it. religious or not.

I wouldn't go as far as to compare a religious symbol to a form of music. Like someone above mentioned, they are thought to be sacred and to have every Tom, Dick, and Harry wearing one because they think its trendy is just wrong.

But if you want to compare it to music...everytime some white boy starts trying to rap the first thing you hear, "another wannabe" "look at that wigger".

i just think that anything that has roots in an ethnicity, religion, or even region does not make it off-limits for others to enjoy. that's all i'm trying to say. i think that when people have problems with eminiem it's equally as baseless.

This "leaflet" the article mentions, can anyone point me to it? Unless something comes from the Vatican, it does not speak for all Catholics. Moreover, unless it's ex cathedra, it's not even the final word and if the subject of friggin birth control isn't even ex cathedra, I highly doubt rosary usage is. On top of that, anything the Catholic Church says applies to Catholics only so anyone else who wants to use a rosary as a bicycle chain can do so freely.

I myself am Catholic and I don't find it offensive at all if anyone does anything with it.

Sorry to be off-topic, but I do think that the roots of many modern music genres can be found in religious music- e.g. rock and roll or soul whose origins are considered to be in the gospel music... :flower:

I agree with Chachka. However, I also think they are stupid looking. What's being said behind wearing them? The fact that you can? Or what. I think that every fashion statement whether by designer or model or your average consumer should say something about themselves not just because everyone else is doing it and not just because it looks cool.

The church nor did Christ INVENT the beads the cross or what not. However the American flag is your symbol that WAS created by a patriot who believed in this country. It would offend and rightly so you if someone were to sh*t on that flag that you call a piece of cloth hanging on a stick. I would be HIGHLY offended if someone looked at my flag that way, especially someone from my own country.

So basically...They are beads, they aren't blessed, filled with holy powers, or deemed sacred by the Bible. but I still think the whole trend is silly.
