Shearling

Does anyone know anything about the different types of the pile? Like is it how old the sheep or lamb is or is just because of different types of species?

For example, I know the really long curly kind is a mongolian something-or-other, but what about the other types? Some look almost like fur and others are very short and curly. Just curiosity.

I have a coat and the collar is the furry type of shearling in a chestnut color and I always wondered b/c I never saw a sheep that looks like that in texture or color. I guess it could be dyed but it doesn't seem like it is.

Also random admission: I always though shearling was made from taking the fleece off the animal by shearing. I only just recently learned that it is also a pelt made with the whole skin like leather and fur is made.:( I don't mind that much but it isn't as animal-friendly as I thought.

You know it's officially a trend when Burberry includes it in every single look of their show.:innocent:

generally the curly stuff is mongolian, you're right.

the other types in the offwhite, classic shearling, textures depend on whether they are 'sheared' or not. the stuff that is lower pile as been sheared or cut close to the skin. the semi curly stuff is just natural. and yes, think of the shealring rugs they make, it's basically the fur-on pelt oof a sheep.

from associatedcontent.com:
"The way real shearling coats and jackets are made is simple. They take a sheep, that is a full grown sheep. It can be a female or male, there's not much difference. They skin the hide, which consists of pulling the hide from the body. They leave the wool on the hide, which is now a sheepskin. Then they tan the hide, trim the wool so it's a nice even thickness, bleach the wool white, as natural wool is a mix of white and gray.

They then may dye the hide, which is now leather; work it so that the leather is very soft, maybe put a few more treatments in the leather, and that's it! When they make the shearling coat or jacket they make it so the wool is on the inside and the leather part is on the outside. Depending on how big and long the shearling coat is it can take 2 to 3 hides to make a shearling coat or jacket."

gossiping: same here. and I honestly prefer it as lining more than on the outside. It seems like what is the point of having such warm and soft material on the outside of your coat and not the inside?

jun3machinaThank you for that educational post and answering my questions!:flower: I karma-ed you but forgot to thank you.

eta: and sorry but I have to say, the styling at topshop is so hideous I can't even tell if I like the garments, it's blinding. I know it's only for the show but still
