And how was Will Chalker discovered again? I can't remember clearly, but I know that it was a semi-funny story...

Whats the best way to approach an agency? Walk in, or send in photos?

The best approach is to do a walk-in with a couple of simple, no-nonsense polaroids of your face and body. That way, the agents have an idea of what you look like in person and in print form (the two looks can differ quite considerably). If they're really interested, they'll probaly take a few snaps of you of you on the spot (this was my experience at NEXT and ELITE), but it's always better to come in w/ some kind of "work".

The disadvantage of sending in photos only is that the agents will only have a faint idea of what you look like in real life. Compounding this problem is the fact that sometimes it's hard to select which polaroids have the most potential to catch an agent's eye.

Wow! Fascinating thread! Thank you, Model Mom for all the great information. This is a good thread in a sense that it really exposes the modelling world. A lot of us on TFS love models but I bet more than half dont know anything about modelling as a job. Lately, Im convinced stronger than ever that its a very very tough job! I mean, I can only imagine being told by an agent "Sorry, but you're not what we're looking for." If it were me, Id cry. I remember when a friend of a friend told me she was told to lose weight. I couldnt believe it, she already looked so svelte.

Anyway, good thread!

2c from a quasi-successful model.

NEVER QUIT WHEN THE MARKET IS HOT FOR YOU, THINKING YOU CAN WALK BACK IN. YOU CAN'T :) I speak from experience. Biggest mistake ever.

Cent # 2: It is OK to ask about how much a shoot will bring you in terms of $$, and it is important to question all unusual charges on your account - keep abreast of what ou agency is supposedly paying for.

Lastly do not expect a bunch of money until you get popular - if that ever happens.
Do not pay for a portofilio thinking it will get you into an agency.

Ok ther eis so much but thats enought for now.

Big one for all of you....Make sure it's what you want. Looks are only 50% of it. If you don't have the personality or the drive Its not going to work. Ali could have made it big but she just didn't want it. She hated being away from home and refused to go back when they needed her. She was suppose to go to Japan for 6 weeks the end of May. She called 2 weeks before she was suppose to go and told them she wasn't going. Ford Models took her off their website in NY. She is still on the Ford site in Chicago and is doing jobs from there...and you know what? She's happy...sometimes when you get what you want, you find out it's not what you wanted after all.

I'd be intersted in a list of modeling agencies nation wide. (in my case, for petite models, I'm 5'5)

I have a question, if Ali is no longer persuing modelling (not seriously) then why are you, model mom, and sloan still actively monitering this site, when your daughter is not even doing it anymore? Doesn't it make her feel like this is what you really wanted for her? And why would you devote so much time to this when she doesn't do it? I mean, I do understand, bc a lot of people here are not in the business, but youre really really active... just a question out of curiosity... :)
