So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

thank you but if they see potenial, will they put you in development in LA or will they send you to NY?? because i know LA fashion hasnt really been the "big league" of fashion lately

If they see $$$ signs in you and you fit the NY profile....there's a good chance they will.

It might be a good idea if you wait till after show and campaign season if they decide to send you to NY. I'm sure a lot of agencies are waiting to see how the economy turns before they pick up new talent.

so i never watch fashion shows and stuff, but do you ever see short guys? the minimum height is 5'11 right?

so say do you ever see a 5'8, 5'9 guy on the runway?

it sucks living on the opposite side of NY. LA doesnt have that many great agencies.

L.A. has some very good agencies, the ones model_mom mentioned above. Just try to be signed with any of those, they can place you in NY and in any other city/country. It would be logically the first step to start ;) You can submit your pictures by email, if any of those is interested they'll invite you for a meeting. You can also try to set up appointments and visit them in person, the chance might be even higher then, just do whatever you prefer ;) Good luck :flower:

:( that's really sad.

The living conditions in the photo appear to be like that of college dorms, but if you stick to either school or modeling assuming you have what it takes in either you'll be successful, though the reward is after you go through struggles.

Totally agree with tgeezyband...

Yes, finally something I've said someone agrees lol, but in all seriousness, I hope something good comes out of my trip to NY besides being in my favorite city, if my visit turns out good, I'll have to bear with the model apartments, the only thing I hope if I do get signed is my roommates keep things clean, because I'm a neatfreak.

I have been trying to break into modeling forever, and I get great responses from agencies and then no follow up after I send more polos. I recently signed with Roberto USA in Miami, but all I have been doig is PAYING for my own test shoots, and not going on any castings, or gettin gother work.

Ah ... this is a very sticky subject ... with a complex answers.

First ... yes, you do have to invest in yourself to develop a portfolio and get a zed/comp card that is strong enough to interest prospective clients. You are self employed ... you need pictures of your product (you), so that you agency can promote you.

But I need to ask you this .... Who are you paying to get those test shots?

The reason I ask is that you should be paying the photographer directly ... not your agency. If you are paying the agency then you've hooked up with the wrong people ... they are making money from you for the photography ... not from finding you jobs. Rule of thumb ... never pay the agency directly for your portfolio, your pictures, or your printing. Now, I don't know your agency, so I'm not saying anything is wrong here .... unless they are charging you upfront ... and you are not paying the photographer and the printer instead. Then you need to ask some more questions and do some investigating.

Also ... If you have a really great look , the agency should also have lot's of photographers who want models for their own creative tests and don't charge. I'd ask a lot more questions. Most agencies have a ton of photogs just chomping at the bit to use agency models ... at no charge. Sooner or later, you will need to pay an occasional photographer for images, but it should be one of the best fashion shooters in town ... not just some unknown.

Just a word or warning to anyone who is thinking about becoming a model .... there are a lot of modeling scams out there that purport to be legit agencies ... but they just make their money on wannabe models dreams.

WOW, just read the whole topic, VERY useful.
model wannabe here, waiting for my 18 bday, my parents aren't really supportive...
too bad, the older, the harder.

hello everybody! i'm 18 in a month,***Edited***
i haven't still send polaroids or anything because i have the parents factor, so i am waiting for my bday.
but i have some questions,

*** Edited***
~ i have breast argumentation, very small, looks very natural - done because of irregular sizes... would it be a problem?
~ and last, i'm from são paulo - brazil... there's really great agencies here, but they seem to only work with the top models, rarely new faces... but there's a lot of contest... i do not like the idea of contests, do you think i should try other countries?

*** Edited*** thanks, barbara

about the contests. i think you should do them only if they are directly created by the big agencies with a good name in the business. like the elite model search. if its with an agency thats not so well known... it might be a scam.
and if you still dont want to do that, then you should just send your pictures to all the NY agencies (imo, i think its better to have your mothere agency be one in new york because they tend to have better connections). if they are interested they will reply.

thanks! that's it, i'll go to the agencies...
there's tones of big-agencies contests here... John Casablancas just launched one, but it feels like too much work for too little... i met girls who had to give up a lot only to be told they are not good for the business, maybe an agency would be more direct: let's do it, or give up... ^_^
