Sincerely, I'm not sure what "trying too hard" means when it comes to fashion. I understand not liking an outfit, or a piece of clothing, or someone being over-styled by a stylist, or preferring one person's style over another's. But "trying too hard" I am not clear on; how is this determined? For instance, would Del Russo be in this category since she is over-the-top sometimes?

trying too hard is when you stop looking stylish and start looking ridiculous...
very simply...

when every single piece you wear is a PIECE...down to your hosiery...
and there is little subtlety or refinement in the overall look...
any outfit that screams 'look at me'...

Ah, thanks for your ideas, softgrey. I can definitely see how Del Russo fits (sometimes I like her style, but sometimes it borders on caricature), and even how *some* of Taylor's outfits fit, though it seems to me that she still mixes in very lowkey, basic pieces, i.e., black Ts, madwell jeans, club monaco scarves, etc. What do you think of Lanphear then, if you don't mind sharing?

Has anyone seen any other views of the outfit below? I'd like to see a front view ideally. I have been wondering what it looks like; is it a dress or coat? It was posted during Milan fashion week, I think, on page 28 / #407. Here's the image again:

If she's going to insist on those drop-crotch pants then she really needs to go understated with everything else. The pants are enough of a statement but when you throw in the statement shoes, jacket and bag its too much.

I don't think she thinks drop crotch pants are statement pieces. From the way she's wearing them, you can tell she thinks they're casual pieces. She chooses very simple drop crotch pants without fancy prints or excessive drapings anyway. She wears them like sweatpants me feels.

I think her recent outfits are less colourful that's all. But I don't feel her work. It's almost like she's trying to recreate herself in them. The red hair, the blazer, the excessive statement jewellery. It kinda reminds me when emmanuel alt stopped being professional and all her work started to resemble caricatures of her own personal style.

edited to ask:what is that chanel that she always carries open? I ask and people always tell me it's a jumbo chanel, it doesn't look like a jumbo chanel.
