The Blonde Hair Thread

I'm not even sure if I'm blonde anymore. It's kinda like a golden non-colour. Like Snejana's, only less red. I think I miss being blonde...but I sure don't miss the roots :ninja:

I recently went from my natural brunette to blonde (so many compliments!) :woot:, but the thing is, it's all one tone, which is kind of dull. And it came out warmer than I expected. I bleached it twice (i know, i know, shame on me) and it looked horrible so I bought medium ash blonde colour and left it on for about 15 minutes and the colour came out looking really nice and natural! It's just not as cool as I wanted it to be, it's on the warmer side sans any highlites. Is there a way I can make it cooler like the photo kissablekae posted of Vlada? At this point my hair looks like Toni Garrn's sans the dark undertones. Thanks!

Use a toner!

I used to be bleach blonde, PLATINUM, and now I'm kind of like a lauren conrad blonde/ sarah jessica parker blonde. I like it, but i miss the bleach effect. Sigh

Right now, I'm obsessed with Scarlett Johansson's hair color in Vicky Cristina Barcelona... But my own hair color is more similar to Hannah Murray's in Skin (mid-blond, kinda golden, but with some slightly darker roots). Not sure it would be possible to change my color that easily without bleaching... What do you think ?

Without seeing your hair colour now, I would assume you would need to bleach and tone it.

Satinella, i think bleach. i havent seen the movie but i think it looks pretty from what ive seen in the poster and promo stills. her hair was also nice in The Island

The Ida, i would still consider that blonde! i really like Snejana's medium blonde hair, it suits her. the strawberry is nice on her but generally i dont like strawberry blonde hair as much as golden/ash. roots drive me crazy too! week four i get antsy and week five which is the longest i'll go its just torture...i dont know how people go months and months without touch ups! but i have a supercute like dark lavendar knit hat i wear when my roots show

Katherine, i think bleach and tone as well. my former hairdresser who i HATE(its strong word but BZ screwed me over) told me that toners will wash out before. i dunno i dont think of toner as the same as hair dye like it will noticeably fade. so say if its too warm/gold then it wont really get better with time(because blonde does tend to go warmer due to outside elements) so i would definitely run ash toner over it!

so basically ive gone to hairdressers to tone & dye and its a good change for sure but its not dramatic at all and never got as ash as i wanted which is more like that Vlada photo i posted. last Saturday i got more full weaved in ash highlights, ooo i love. im still working towards the solid blonde look like Vlada & Snejana but not completely i like the subtle texture i get from highlights. but in general i hate highlights at the roots cuz i see the lil blocks of color, im so anal about that kind of stuff! blend blend blend!

The thing with toner is that if you have bleached hair, some of the toner will remain in your hair. I toned my hair medium blonde (it said so on the box), but it turned out brown  But when the toner started to fade, I had the loveliest dark blonde hair. I might try a strawberry blonde toner, but I don't know if there's bleach in it, and I might wait until summer...and until I get a haircut.

I just hate that the bottom of my hair is blonder than the rest due to sun exposure  Does this happen to others - you go out in the sun, and suddenly your hair is lighter?

I have naturally blonde hair and have found that, by the end of summer, the top layer has lightened significantly compared to the rest of my hair. I don't mind, myself - the contrast between the light top layers and darker bottom layers is neat, especially when I style my hair so that you can see both shades.

^I love golden-blonde hair that gradually lightens towards the bottom and is lighter around the face than in the back. It's a marker of natural color, and many hairstylists actually strive to create that effect artificially.

To anyone getting highlights, don't get them done right at the roots. It looks great for about three weeks. It's better to get them done in various distances starting at least a couple of centimeters away from the roots, concentrating on the middle layers within the hair, and lightening the ends and front hairline strands the most.

Do this, and if your natural haircolor is light enough, your highlights won't need to be redone for up to six months. In fact, they'll look even better as they grow out.

finally after hundreds of photos i have a decent one of my hair!
usually the way i wear my hair is just "tossed" check out the Head Toss Thread. thats how i love for hair to be just sexy, soft & touchable looking. but when i do that sometimes the 'underbelly' of my hair shows, some of the darker pieces that still need to be highlighted show! but its a work in progress and ive still got a little more to do before i get the look i want or before 'im finished'

but i do love a middle part on me. i know a lot of people hate it but it seriously just works on me. its nice to do sometimes because i feel more balanced. excuse the roots! im going back before Spring semester starts for touch ups...which is very soon!

oh yes. i almost forgot. i hate that Pantene Silver Expressions purple shampoo. its intended for Gray hair but purple shampoos work to keep blondes ashy too. ive stopped using it because it was drying out my hair so badly even super strength Bumble & bumble Creme de Coco masque wasnt strong enough to make it feel lovely after using Pantene!

so i stopped and went back to my John Frieda Sheer Blonde Lustrous Touch Shampoo & Conditioner and in that one day my hair snapped back like *that* its all soft again, managable and even ashier like i want. i think the purple shampoo was not only drying my hair out by making it look dingy. its horrible because i thought my hair was suddenly got fried out of nowhere. so i was going to just do root touchup in the next coming week or two before school starts because i dont want to make my hair worse ya know? im the kind of person that would not do all this bleaching and color at the expense of not having touchable hair! but since my hair is healthy again with good products im gonna go ahead with my root touch up plus more ash blonde highlights.

i just got more highlights on MLK Jr. Monday! yae its more solid now, ive pretty much got one more session in mid February before its all blonde. only bits left are a little bit of light brown pieces in the middle layer(underbelly) :) my hair still surprisingly soft even after this salon session, yes! good because im almost done then after this its just gonna be monthly root touch ups.

taken with dirty mirror reflection.

im almost there! i think one more full highlights session and i'll pretty much be all blonde then i can just go in for a blonde root touch-up instead of more highlights.

i love it. & getting a lot of compliments to my hairdresser ;)

^ thank you redeemed by Him! i'm always glad to help!
btw love your icon, love Sean O! lol he somehow made those crazy genie pants work!(Tim Gunn "Make it Work!")

ive gotten into wavy hair lately! i really really wanted the CHI flat iron my hairdresser used to curl my hair, its dark grey with lighter grey skull prints and the brand CHI in red lights. she got it for $120. its a bit of an investment since ive already got super straight hair and only using it to curl every once and a while. I think its important to use good hair tools, I feel the better flat iron I get the less times i'll have to run it thru my super bleached hair = less damage!

^ found a black one online for $102! Its similar to the one my hairdresser has. i'm pretty sures hers was grey on grey.

i think hair care is important for bleached hair, sooo

oo i love John Frieda Frizz Ease Leave In Conditioning Spray for blow drying protection because i usually air dry and use nothing.
00jffe.jpg

^ im almost done with this bottle. im plan to repurchase this for the days when i blow dry so i can wear hats. but on the days i curl, i want strong protection and i'll probably use Bumble and bumble leave in conditioner... i love the one my hairdresser used on me but i dont know which one it is, i think its one of the treatments. thats on my wishlist as well. im going to take a wild guess and say it was probably Damage Therapy Complex since its newish and they have been trying to use it more in the salon & promote it. i actually purchased this before and returned because i had too many hair products at the time. i was using John Frieda Leave In which i like as well as some Kerastase.

and when i curl i use John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Boosting Mousse to help my straight hair hold a curl. i just got this but so far its working nicely, leaves hair soft and not sticky at all.

^ I couldn’t find the actual picture but this one is similar.

im NOT a fan of hairspray at all, if anyone like my hairdresser uses it on me i only let her use very little. she used Bumble and bumble hairspray on me, i like it a lot but since i dont usually skip the hairspray part i dont know if i want to spend $25 for something i'll rarely use.
00bb.jpg

i have John Frieda Sheer Blonde hairspray, its not bad at all, smells nice! not too stiff but i prefer always no hairspray if i can get away with it so i rarely use. even trace amounts i can feel it in my hair and im always less is more. anyways if they made a Sheer Blonde Leave In Conditioning spray/creme or Sheer Blonde Mousse i'd snatch that up sooo fast! because that line of prodcuts smells like heaven to me. lol i should e-mail them about it!

i've showed my hairdresser pictures of Vlada Roslyakova for my dream hair, both cut(very long, minimal layering : long ones only in the front) & color.

going into this I was going to do dark blonde hair. but ive done that with temporary hairspray before so i decided to push the envelope and do medium blonde. when i had that it medium, I didn’t like it because it was too golden for my skin tone and also slightly strawberry blonde for a time. so ive been gradually going lighter blonde and ashier but i love it! better to gradually get better than worse.

i think originally i was scared to ask for light blonde highlights even though that something that i have considered, i dont like the whole negativity with 'Blonde Asians'...like we arent allowed to go Blonde even though to me its just another color found in nature, all I have to say to that is “Lighten Up! It’s Just Fashion!” :)

one of my best friends is full Asian, melanin challenged like me, she's pale with light eyes and ive seen pictures of her as a child when had naturally blonde hair! im happy to report that i have been getting lots of great compliments from so many different people. even middle aged women who i'd never think would want to be blonde(one was Asian and one was African American) asked about my hairdresser & salon so they could go back to being blonde! and some older gentlemen(like my grandfather's age) who i would assume to be more old fashioned and only into brown or black hair said that liked blonde hair on me. after all this effort(& money for that matter) and being the perfectionist that I am and even if I never ask people for their opinion BECAUSE I DO WHAT I WANT I have to admit its a really nice feeling that people like it!

Your hair is looking pretty, Kissablekae. Can I ask you - and please tell me if I'm being totally ignorant - is it possible to be full (East)Asian, as you mentioned, and have blonde hair as a child and light, non-brown eyes?

About Vlada, her blonde is also one of my faves, but I thought she looked way more beautiful as a light brunette, earlier in her career.

I think she looks more angelic and ethereal as a brunette, which is odd, because those qualities are usually associated with blonde hair.

thanks GasolineRainbow :)

my best friend's eyes are brown but they are super super light golden brown, she gets them from her father! i remember when i met him for the first time i was like whoa! they glow like *~flashing lights~* she always gets red eye in pictures because they are so light. my older sister has light brown eyes as well and has the red eye problem. my BFF is really pale as well and has pink undertones, whereas im more neutral. i remember her showing me pictures of her as a kid with blonde hair, my jaw dropped. her hair has darken as she got older, its more of a medium ashy brown now.

i have seen pictures of some Asians that do have blue and green eyes but i think thats due to mixing for a long time, i forget which part of Asia it was. i believe some of the people in the pictures were from Kazahkstan. im taking a Race and Ethnicity class right now, its very interesting! even more so because the part of California where im from its very diverse and really mixed, we have so many different people to learn from. i always hear on the internet that people rarely ever see Asian Male and White/Black/Hispanic female couples but around here i see it all the time...its a beautiful thing :)

i love Vlada with that hair as well, i agree she still has that angelic and ethereal quality as a brunette. one day i may go back to darker but it will be gradual...medium blonde to dark blonde and light brown like Vlada's. i dont know if i wanna go any darker than light brown because darker hair washes me out and i dont like having to wear more makeup because it becomes a chore. Vlada has been lucky that her transitions with different hair colors has been incredibly graceful and all of them have been flattering on her.

An old post, but here's a photograph of my hair after a long, sunny summer. Unfortunately, being stuck in the middle of winter has caused the natural highlights to fade, and now my hair has quickly returned to its original shade of dark blonde. The one thing getting me through this - since I don't and never have dyed my hair - is knowing that more sunny days are in the near future!

My photograph

^ i dont think you should color it either. its kinda cool like mood changing hair! except changing by the seasons. its so pretty :) im sure the dark blonde is as well!
