The Blonde Hair Thread

gimme gimme moar.

my hair looks so different depending on the lighting. i hate yellow lights, i have natural daylight bulbs over my vanity which help a lot but cameras still pick up all those yellow & orange tints from the lights. i need to take more pictures in natural lighting but i dont have time during the day! & im a night owl :)

blonde06.jpg

^ let your eyes find the stars. i got lucky with these photos because they picked up more of the true ash tones in my hair so i kept shooting...

blonde04.jpg

^ whatchu lookin' at? my roots, my roots are on fire! hahaha

blonde03-1.jpg

^ the light brown pieces in the middle layer of my hair show more when i curl it. people say they dont really notice it but i do and i actually dont like it very much. i just tell myself : "patience young grasshopper"...cant wait till my next appt

blonde01.jpg

^ ahh much better here with roots fixed. there are some super light pieces at the very bottom peeking out, i love those and want more of them in my middle layer. which reminds me i have to find pictures of Mischa Barton with lots of light blonde in the middle/bottom layers of her hair so i can show my hairdresser.

blonde02.jpg

^ channeling...the grudge lol i was actually just messing around in this picture but i ended up liking it because my hair looks solid blonde like how i would want it eventually.

camera wh*re with me because its fun! you know you wanna!

photos of me by me!

posted the wrong photo for this caption *kehe*

ME

ok here is my dream color..I want to ask you guys if you know any shade out there that comes in a bottle like this (preferably something from l'oreal but anything goes..) or what should I ask exactly my hairdresser for..any help would be great!!thank you!!:flower:
my caps

That would be called something like Dark Golden Blonde or Light Golden Brown. But it doesn't matter what the label says or what the color on the box looks like, because the result depends on your hair's color and condition.

Better to take that screencap to your stylist (most salons have a computer) so they know exactly what you're talking about. Your image of dark blonde may be another person's dark brown, so pictures are always better.

i dont trust box color for anything blonde. i usually bring magazine print out pictures but if it doesnt show up on paper how i want it exactly then i just bring my laptop!

i brought in a magazine page of this photo of Sasha, Vlada, & Maryna.
i asked for Maryna's and i ended up with super gold and some random orangey strips on one side of my head that didnt get bleached enough. the extreme golden tones clashed with my pale skin in a bad way, it was like milky skin + yellow head of hair. my former hairdresser Carrie(sh*tlisted) is *le incompentant* what can i say? the bz just has bad taste(judgement)! so i lived and learned the hard way.

now im going for a light blonde so ask for Vlada's color with my current hairdresser Amber whom i love. i specifically chose her because she's a natural blonde so she knows what looks like natural and what doesnt.

My natural hair color is black but it has been blonde for almost 10 years now. I love it, I love the color and my hair is very healthy. But after almost 10 years I'm starting to feel bored with it. I want a change and I've been thinking about a dark brown but i'm not sure yet. I don't want to regret it later and having to wait untill I can go back to blonde if I don't like or don't get used to the dark brown.
I'm paranoid about posting my pics:blush:, but my hair looks exactly like Claudia Schiffer's in these pics, same color, same texture, same cut, almost same length (mine is a bit longer).

iconphoto, celebutopia
And this is the color I want now.

imax

But I want to be very sure before I make any big changes.:)

It's hard to tell! it depends on your features really. You should post some pictures of yourself! :flower:

If natural for you is black, you would probably look much better in chocolate brown.

I'm thinking about going brown as well, but a lighter brown because dark chocolate brown is TOO dark for me, unfortunately.

kissablekae! I truly admire your determination and perserverance in attaining your ultimate dream shade of hair - its really inspiring! Your hair colour really suits you I reckon!

sleepingbeauty13 - how do u manage to upkeep such haircolour? please let me know! Having recently bleached my also black/brownish hair blonde 2 weeks ago...my really obvious roots are beginning to show! And its not that I am a roots nazi but do you have any tips on how to manage the vast variation?

Evy I should post pictures of myself, but I can't begin to explain how paranoid I am about it.:ninja:

It should be the case, yes. Although I'm very pale and the dark hair makes a big contrast, not exactly a bad thing. People always assume I'm a natural blonde and when I say my natural hair color is black they look at me funny and when my roots are showing they always make comments like, "Your hair really is black, I thought you were joking". The thing is, I really like both light blonde and really dark (I always go for the extreme), so I'm thinking maybe I should try a dark blonde/light brown first and then (if I'm not too freak out by the change) go for the dark brown (if I don't like the dark blonde/light brown is easier to go back to light blonde).
I really am thinking this over and over:unsure: and yet when I decided to dye it blonde I didn't think about it at all, I just did it and now I can't make up my mind.

redeemed_by_Him sorry, I don't have any tips on how to manage really obvious roots, that's the only negative thing for me, my hair grows like crazy and my roots start showing in the first week and if I wait for a month before retouching, my roots are at least an inch long. I guess its inevitable with drastic changes in hair color:(. But to keep it healthy remember to use a very good hair conditioner and shampoo and if you blow dry it be sure to use products that protect from the heat. It's very important to use good products.:flower:

redeemed by him, thank you dearie!
im such a perfectionist when it comes to things like this. i didnt even want to attempt having blonde hair for a while because i needed to sort out the brows. i kept hearing that salons only did brow tints but not lightening. my hair is naturally dark brown and i have strong brows, very dark & dense. after i got that sorted out i was soo amped for blonde!

sleepingbeauty13, i would say go with the dark blonde/light brownish color first, semi-permanent if you can that way its much easier to go back and with less damage :flower:

im fair skinned as well and i feel like its much more shocking to go darker than lighter. people always ask me if its been harder getting used to light hair but it really isnt. when i wakeup in the morning with no makeup i dont feel washed out with lighter hair, its great because i can get away with very little makeup and still look fabulous(<-hehe)

ive dyed my hair soft black before but its was really extreme for me. when my roots grew out and they were lighter than the dye! so i kept trying to wash my hair more to fade the black dye. when its black or naturally dark brown i do feel washed out :( and i hate feeling like i have to wear 'enough' makeup and felt paranoid if my makeup faded through out the day because i didnt want to look 'like death'. and people kept asking me if i was really tired or sick or something. RUDE!

my hair definitely isnt as light as sleepingbeauty13's/Claudia's so roots dont show as fast. its been two weeks and its fine but i bet by week 3 and 4, im gonna be like oo my goodness baby! once a month touchups sounds about right. people think its crazy i go back to salon so often but you do what you gotta do especially you make extreme changes. same here for me, its all about a good shampoo or conditioner and youre pretty much set, if you style then a heat protectant or leave in conditioners are a must. i actually prefer to use a leave in conditioner before curling because curls/waves will come out super smooth and bouncier. its a barrier to protect your hair from all that hot hot heat!

Short of a hat, there's no solution for covering dark roots. The only things that slightly work are wearing your hair in a messy, jaggedy part; shimmery, pigmented gold highlighter (for face) on roots; or brushing your hair backwards and wearing a wide hairband over the roots. At best, dark roots can look cool in a punk way. Imo Debbie Harry and Sienna Miller rocked the dark roots, but it takes a certain attitude and personal style to pull it off.

I colored my hair pale blonde for a few years, and grew so sick of the dark roots that I reverted to my natural color. From now on, it's only highlights. I can only speak for myself, but I'm a very light, bordering-on-blonde brunette, and my roots looked black next to the paler blonde. The contrast was really obvious.

kissablekae thanks for the semi-permanent color suggestion, I haven't think of it even though I did it once years ago, it's really easy and it washed in no time, plus the one I used had deep conditioners and it was like getting a very good hair treatment that happened to add some color. I'm going to do it!:flower:

I know what you mean GasolineRainbow, my friends think my inch long roots look cool, they like them. Most of the time I don't mind them, last time I waited untill they were almost 3 inches long (first time I've done that), but sometimes I can't wait to get rid of them.

sleepingbeauty13, no problem at all. that's what i will be doing eventually too!

GasolineRainbow, lol my wishlist says : knit hats for when the roots come blazin' in! i love my dark lavendar knit cap but i dont want to wear the same thing everyday!
wearing hair messy is a very good tip. i never part my hair when im due for an appt. its just get pushed back with my hands, the result is 'sex hair' haha and thats why i hate having bangs...

i still have an unopened bottle of Jerome Russell Ash Blonde hairspray. it was intended for inbetween touch ups. not everyday but its there just in case i have a big camera whorrific special occasion coming up and i dont have time to go to salon

i also noticed i dress differently when my roots show lol i wear darker clothes. i dont do much of my softer clothes like lavendar, pale pink, light blue etc unless i have fresh out of the salon hair like the first two weeks or so when i can still wear center/side parts or thin headbands. roots are easier to 'pull off' with a grungier look ;)

I'm debating what shade of blonde to go now.. currently I'm dark golden, kind of like lauren conrad? Thinking of going to blake lively blonde. Everytime i go a bit darker or brown in like.. a week, i want it light again! I wish i could just have a ton of wigs, lol

i posted this photo of Kristin Kreuk in the Natural/Minimal makeup look thread...her hair in this photo reminds me of mine when my natural hair was growing out from the black dye. how my hair is lighter along the hairline and especially at the temples. i always noticed that on Smallville :)

i bring in this photo of Ruslana ripped out from Allure to show my hairdresser. i cant wait till my hair grows back to long long(it was above my belly button before) not medium long! and for its natural fullness is restored...my former hairdress gave me layers i didnt ask for...wth is up with hairdressers wanting to layer full hair to nothingness! thats what people put in extentions for(if not length then fullness)! the only layers im okay with are long layers in the front to help frame the face. im only speaking for myself, on me i hate any layers in the back or inbetween.

i am natural brunette, but i went blonde over a year ago, i was thinking really blond and at some point lily donaldson had that hair colour i wanted so i showed that pic and now i a happy! i recommend using haircare products for blondes, like john frieda haves.

^ i agree! ive never had problems with brassiness. ive been using John Frieda's Sheer Blonde line since i started doing blonde highlights back in August. i just bought another bottle of the Lustrous Touch Conditoner for all Blonde hair types, it keeps my hair silky silky. my hair passed my friend's touch(petting) test lol

there is a girl in my class who has the most beautiful natural goldie blonde hair! it reminded me of Snejana Onopka's hair in this particular picture of her from the Anna Sui show. its weird because the girl in my class doesnt really fit being a blonde. i think with her features would stand out much more as a brunette. everytime she turns around i expect a different face! if i were her id have fun and play around with some semi-permanents. come to think of it she likes darker clothing too, with darker hair she would just look amaze-za-zing!(not that blondes cant wear dark clothing because i love dark clothes just as much as light on me but im not trying to generalize at all! im just going off on how this girl looks :) ).

im going back to the salon next weekend to get more ash highlights & the monthly root touchup! time flies doesnt it? that means ive been in school for one month and there really arent any hotties with bodies in my classes

For sleepingbeauty;

I would probably recommend going for a light caramel brown, because I was a light blonde:

And have just gone for this caramel brown colour:

It isn't too harsh and not too dark, but I still find that I look a lot different but it has worked with my features. You just have to pick the right shade of brown, so discuss it with your stylist like I did! Mine is not permenant and will return back to blonde again in about 2 months as it will fade out.

InnocentFairy that caramel shade is great, is the light blonde/dark brown shade that I want now. Thanks:flower:! That is going to be one of the shades I'll ask my stylist about. I'm going to ask about this shade too,

And I'll ask for a semi permanent color. That way if I don't like it I don't have to keep it. :)
