i agree with Voltaire 6, maintenance is key. hairdressers do their job but when you go home, its on you to keep hair in good condition and brassiness at bay. i see a lot of natural blondes who let their highlights go brassy...
i've heard some horror stories with DIY toner when they don't have the exact instructions of a hd. one needs to know what to look for. sometimes people only pay attention to the time but not how their hair is reacting so when they rinse, it ends up a disaster.
FASHIONLOVA, are you going back to blonde from brunette?
you should consider going back to your salon for an ash toner to help with some of the orangeyness. i've done that twice before and no they should not charge you. it won't be perfect but it will definitely calm the color.
are you interested in Shimmer Lights? i know Sally's carries it.
i'm going brunette to blonde doing right now and it's going to be a challenge with all this dye. i went from light-medium blonde to super dark brown, dyed twice. i'm going for a modest dark ash blonde but i have a lot of hair dye to bleach through so i'm taking it slow.
my first sets of highlights are too warm. i went back after a week for more ash toner which muted it a bit but my highlights still need more bleach for it to be ashier. i'm taking my time and babying my hair. i spoke to my hairdresser to figure out a game plan
. she says my hair is still soft so everything is going good so far. when i go back for the second session of full highlights, she will also run the bleach over my current highlights to get it the shade i wanted.
i actually had the orangey problem last time i was going blonde. my former hairdresser's did that so i left her and went to my current salon. my former hairdresser was inconsistent, i had no problems with getting ashy highlights after that.
these photos are from last time:
first highlights
good ashy shade. not sure about the Laetitia Casta-esque highlights but i was experimenting, i probably had that for a month.
second highlights
the second session is when my former hairdresser dropped the ball. i don't have any pictures of my color at its worst(who would want to revisit that?). i asked for not as light highlights. it ended up really gold like friggin' 24K
and made my overall hair look like it had strawberry blonde cast over it. i'm not sure when this was taken but this is probably after i went back to have her run Ash toner through it which helped quite a bit. but i cut ties with her because i don't want to deal with her not listening to me and the fact that she seemed content with my unhappiness. if i wasn't as assertive, bz would have let me walk around lookin' busted!
blonde dye / third highlights
when i transitioned to a new salon, i told them i wasn't happy with the warmth. so first thing we decided to do was dye my highlights to nix whatever strawberry mess my former hd left me with. then later on i got ash blonde highlights. you can still see the gold highlights left over in my bangs from the previous hd. they added more ash on the bottom part of the hair.
fourth highlights
much much bettah. got rid of a lot of the gold / strawberry from the previous hd
^ i hope the colors are showing up okay and my hair is not like green or something lol. i had to fix a lot of the pictures because my old camera and lighting was really warm.
some hairdressers are just super defensive. i didn't like my former hd because she didn't care about quality control! even though blonde can be challenging, i understand its a work in progress. if it's not perfect in one session but not a
disastuh and they are willing work through it then it's coo. i like my current one because we can talk more openly and she listens and tries to give me what i want. she does her job at the salon, i do my job when i go home to keep my hair in good condition.
all photos are of me by me
