The Film Lovers Thread!

I have finally seen This is England.
This is an amazing film ! This is the story of a young boy who is 12, and who gets closer and closer to skinheads. It's deeply moving because we cannot hate him - he is young, seems kind to his mother, is funny and seems to have "reasons" for being awful - he lost his father in the war -, but at the same time, we cannot agree with the way he turns out to be. He becomes more and more racist ... whereas, at the beginning, he seemed just like you and me, a normal guy who wants to be respected.

I would like to see The Reader, now. I studied the book in German class, last year, and I thought it was really moving. I'm impatient to see it, and I wonder when it comes out in France ... I'm gonna check.

i wish i had read the book first ^ but i will read it anyhow.. hopefully soon, if i find some time. :p that's a horrible thing to have to say, one should always make time to read good books....^_^ i loved the film though.

i just finished watching changeling.. i have seen some heavy films but for some reason this one really got to me. i found it quite disturbing, far more than i anticipated, and actually really difficult to watch in several parts.. i was literally cringing and covering my face as i watched it. :(
it's difficult to believe it is a true story. it's disgusting what people can do.. horrifying really.. i thought angelina and all the cast did a very good job.. the story seems too wild to be true but the acting was very believable i thought..

watching her in the psych. ward was particularly difficult.. in all her roles she somehow taps into an extraordinary rage or passion or something deep within, some sort of pulse that connects us all.. a mighty heart, girl interrupted and now this.. there is something so raw about her emotion, it goes deeper than acting i think.. you can tell how honest and real the feeling is for her..

anyway, it's hard to say i liked the film because i found it so hard to watch and to accept, it was so upsetting.. but the acting was very, very well done

I saw "The Reader" before Kate Winslet won the Oscar and I thought it was utterly brilliant.

It's such a powerful film and the way she relentlessly works to hide "her secret" is just brilliant.

For those who have seen it; did you like it? And do you think Kate deserved the Oscar for it?

I certainly did! :)

Thought I'd post this in here for those that might be interested... I saw Lagerfeld Confidential tonight & even thought I've already seen some of these... I plan to watch the rest. I love the lineup.

ETA: Here's the link that will take to you to more info & also the dates/times of the additional airings for each film.

I saw The dutchess not the best and not the worst.
Keira was absolutely lovely, Fiennes did good job.
The film just missed that something.
there was some funny scene, like drunken georgina *hah*

also saw

the curious case of benjamin button again.
Love it.

I agree with everything you said. I cried buckets watching that movie, not only was it heartbreaking but it made me so angry when the legal system had the nerve to question her as a mother as to what her son looks like and doubting her capability as a mother because she had to work for a living. And yes it is very difficult to say you enjoyed it but it will stay with me for a long time knowing what that women went through.

I saw Eyes Wide Shut last night. Something about that movie had me so mesmerized, I don't know. I guess it was Kubrick's directing? The movie also gave me a haunting effect, I wasn't sure whether to be afraid or turned on by all the stuff going on in that house...

I saw Gran Torino, very moving. It's funny at the beginning : he seems so racist that I just couldn't believe it ! And he becomes more and more nice and tolerant with the contact of people from Asia ...
It's a beautiful movie, I think.

Totally agree. I loved his interactions with the family next door, the priest and his family! and in mixing with different people he would never had before, you see the changes in him and also the changes in the people around him. I loved this movie. One of his best i think.

I loved that movie too. There's this misterious vibe that you feel all the time, there's something going on. This club of high society, a code, a secret, a murder. All ingredients to make a movie exciting. Kubrick was known as a brilliant filmmaker and a demanding director.. close to perfectionism, who only worked with the best. The cinematographer of the movie was Larry Smith, who also worked on several film with Kubrick.
It's a sexy movie.

just saw HUSBANDS by JOHN CASSAVETTES yesterday and it was AMAZING! GENIUS! MAGNIFIQUE! casavettes is definitely a legendary director in my book. First the Italian Neo Realists, then GODARD, then Cassavettes.

with over 80 films to Godard's name i have yet to find my favorite by him. But i must say out of the ones i've seen so far i definitely like Masculin féminin and Vivre sa vie because of Anna Karina's beautiful presence and style.
that haircut gets me.

that second picture is when Anna Karina watches The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer in movie theatre. I can relate even more now with Vivre sa vie cuz that was exactly my reaction to Dreyer's film. here is a still from that.

made in 1928 and still one of the best films of all time.
I highly recommend The Passion of Joan of Arc! And its even better when you add your own soundtrack to it because its a silent film and its super sad. :[ but in a good way B)

oh, the Dreyer Joan of Arc is a very very good film! i saw it a few years ago and still have images of it in my head. Superb acting by Maria Falconetti!

It doesnt feel like silent film at all, it's so full of life and emotions (but not in an usual overdone silent film way) plus the acting is so good that you forget that its done already 90 years ago! Amazing, touching and thoughtful film.

Last night I stayed up and watched White Oleander with Michelle Pfeiffer and Renee Zellweger.
The main character and her boyfriend were pretty realistic I thought. She was influenced by anyone that she mixed with which her mother disapproved of.
I felt for the mother (in jail having murdered her lover [Billy Connolly ]) but she was also unashamedly pressuring upon her daughter, even though the pressure was to be herself.
