Here's a new story from Entertainment Weekly and also CNN about how Rep Gabrielle Giffords (she is the victim of a recent mass shooting that killed 6 people) is using Harry Potter to help her recover:

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords healing with 'Harry Potter'
by Mandi Bierly

Like everyone, I follow reports on the recovery of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords amazed at what she’s already able to do and mindful of the long road ahead of her. Her mother, Gloria, sent an email to family and friends on Tuesday updating her status as the congresswoman, still in serious condition after a bullet traveled the length of the left side of her brain on Jan. 8, prepares to be moved to a rehab facility (hopefully on Friday). News sources obtained the note, and now we know that she was able to untie her husband Mark Kelly’s tie and unbutton the top button of his shirt when he returned to her side after speaking at her aide’s memorial service, and that she’s scrolled through the photos on his iPod and begun to read cards made for her by concerned 4th graders. We also know that her husband has gotten large-print pages of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in the J.K. Rowling series, ”for her to hold and read.” In a CNN story filled with reasons to tear up, for me, that was one of them.

I don’t know if Rep. Giffords is a Harry Potter fan re-reading the book, or someone who’s always wanted to read the series, or someone who’s only reading it now because it comes in large-print and an occupational therapist recommended it, but I love that it’s what she’s holding in her hand. On the surface, it appears like a light-hearted escape, one filled with magic and wonder that you hope someone who’s been through the very real trauma she’s experiencing could still believe in and enjoy. But it’s also a serious story about a boy whose parents were taken from him by a man who’s as evil as Harry is good. The series doesn’t sugarcoat what Harry faces to protect what he believes in. It’s about him standing up for himself and those he fights for, and overcoming the obstacles (and man) who would stop him.

Happy reading, Rep. Giffords. If this is your first trip to Hogwarts, here’s a spoiler: Harry’s a Gryffindor. So are you.

^^ daj, when they come of a certain age (11 I believe), their powers really start to develop and wizards/Hogwarts can detect that. So someone from the school visits them and explains the whole thing to the parents. As what happened in Lily's case.

same happened like tom riddle
so dumbledore came to muggle orphanage, and explain tom riddle about magic, and bla2... others things!

girls, thank you for you explanations, you're very nice! :)

i remember the procedure with Hagrid and Harry, but i don't remember Lilly's case. i was asking specifically about muggle- born witches and wizards - those who find about it all the first time in their lives (which Dursleys weren't since aunt knew about Lilly). i mean, i do find it a tad weird that a weird person comes to your home, talks about magic school and says you're kid can go away with them and you just let your kid do it. there's probably some brochure/tour with even more simplified explanation if they don't believe it, no?

about Hermione and Ministry. general view, at least in my country (and from what i got we're not the only ones) is that bureaucracy is one boring place with regulations filled ,without creativity (this removes Harry from this cus he's actually practicing it) ----basically life in office with 8 hour work each day (with thousands of ppl hating you due to all the paperwork and processes they have to go through cus of the bureaucrats). Hermione's work is very NGO inside GO which seems cool from a point, but from another i can't help myself from thinking she should've gone somewhere else. oh well. i loved, on the other side, how Ron went to become his brother's partner.
about Neville, Rowling has been saying from the start he's good in Herbology and bad in everything else, but never got the feeling he was that good that he actually became a professor. :)

This might sound silly, but I actually got really choked up while reading this article. Thank you for sharing it with us. Its simply horrid what happened to Giffords (and everyone else affected by the shooting) but I hope she has a good recovery and that she finds solace in Harry Potter. She is an incredibly strong fighter and she will make it through all her battles, just like Harry did.

Same with me^ That's absolutely tragic what happened to her and all the others. I hope she will recover and get help from the HP book series in that. Thank you for posting the article :flower:

^Oh I bawled when I read that. Not silly at all. :)

Also, the Wizarding World theme park has helped Universal Orlando boost it's HIGHEST attendance since 2004:

Universal Orlando reported its best fourth quarter ever in 2010, and its highest attendance in six years, thanks in large part to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

A staggering 11.2 million people visited the Orlando-based theme park last year. That's a 20 percent increase from the year before.

I'm willing to bet that number will spike again this summer when Deathly Hallows part is released. :D

I don't know if it was ever posted here, but Kelly McDonald was cast to play The Grey Lady in Deathly Hallows Part 2.
She said in a recent interview with The Independent that David Yates previously turned her down for the role of Tonks in OOTP:

In her comfy knitwear and bright-orange trousers, the small, young-looking and low-key Macdonald looks more like a student than the woman who has quietly become one of the best actresses of her generation. She's just finished shooting the part of the Grey Lady in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Unassuming as ever, she thinks director David Yates was doing her a favour "as he's knocked me back a couple to times to play [the Order of the Phoenix member] Tonks in the Harry Potter films".

Kelly McDonald is currently starring in Boardwalk Empire.

Deathly Hallows Part I got nominated for TWO Academy Awards. It's nominated in the Visual Effects and Art Direction categories.

It's competition for Art Direction includes Alice in Wonderland, Inception, The King's Speech and True Grit. For Visual Effects: Alice in Wonderland, Hereafter, Inception and Iron Man 2.

The Harry Potter series as a whole has now received 9 Oscar nominations:
Sorcerer's Stone--3
Prisoner of Azkaban--2
Goblet of Fire--1
Half Blood Prince--1
Deathly Hallows--2

I just hope it wins this time. They definitely deserve it. The quality of these films improves every time and the filmmakers work SO hard. :D

they definitely deserve it!! the special effects in deathly hallows are awesome! however, i think Inception probably will take these home...

#682  at ruppert's expression! when dan and emma quite shock/scared/thrill but ruppert keep it cool..

i bet the Academy will wait for the final movie and then they'll get some awards. i know i'm one of the very few, but actually i think it could even have a shot for a bigger category. the academy sometimes likes to honor actors/movies that had a great impact (some actors rather get an oscar for their overall career, not neccessarily deserving for that one role) and these movies have dominated the boxoffice for ten years.
the last lotr's movies wasn't that great (i always preferred the second one) but got all the awards, it wasn't really about quality but impact on popculture in that case

sobriquet87 yes i know! but im afraid that either Alice in Wonderland or Inception will win though :( HP just really deserves it now after all these nominations!
