The What to Wear Where? Thread

a nice smartish jacket, skirt & a pretty blouse. I know what I'd wear but I don't know your style. what kind of things do you like?

I like Helena suggestion..but to make sure I'd ask the newly weds what they had in mind..

Since its set at 5pm maybe the reception is cocktail/party orientated ? In that case a cocktail dress might do ?

"Daft" outfit needed for christening!

I have a christening (my brothers son) at the end of the month. Apparently I have been chosen to be my nephews godmother (can they do that??...)
Let me summarise the scene - my family live in the middle of nowhere, there is no (decent) life and its rather dull. I live in London and moved there as soon as I was old enough. The only good thing about my home town was the main road running out of it to London.
Brother got married last year (christening this year...you get the idea) and I wore what I thought was a rather fabulous outfit. British weddings usually look the same, all the women seem to wear some shade of pastels and cheap net hats from department stores. I had thought that I would go in something a bit different: A Marc Jacobs silk stripy skirt and a furry fitted jacket and cowboy boots and big heart brooch from Tatty Devine. At the wedding, people kept coming up to me saying "oh trust you to wear something daft - good on ya!"
Daft was not what I after. These out of towners would not know a good outfit if it bit them on the ****.
Anyway, i have decided that if they thought my wedding outfit was daft, they have not seen nothing yet! I am going to wear the most fabulous / daft outfit I can find.
How about a few suggestions to turn those heads. I figure that you don't upstage the bride at the wedding (which I asure you I did not, the mother in law wore all white - shocking!) but what are the rules with christenings?
Please post all suggestions and pictures - I want to have some fun!

May Crowning Dress

Hey, in May I have an event at school (I got to a catholic school). Its called May Crowning and its when we crown Mary with a crown made out of roses. Since I'm in 8th grade this year my class will be doing the mass and
I need something cute but conservetive to wear to the mass. I'm thinking something cute like pastel or bright colors (were not allowed to wear black) for under $100. If any of you have any ideas for me i would appreciate it to post pictures. Thank you.

I went to a Catholic elementary school and Ive never heard of such a thing...Hmm

Anyways, I was thinking of a white dress with a 3D red rose on it. I was thinking of the time when The Madonna appeared to the man at Guadalupe, he then filled his tunic with roses and The Madonna appeared on it. Something like that...or an ivory structured dress with extreme embroidery that implies the Papal habit.

What to wear to a fundraiser?

I've been invited to an elaborate weekday evening dinner, whose goal is to raise funds for fellowships for Ph.D. students. Dress is "Business Attire", and crowd will be mainly CEOs and their socialite wives. Think Chanel or Armani suits, multistrand pearls, gold brooches etc.

As one of the two student recipients, I will be "on display" that evening. I've been instructed to wear my "prettiest dress". I could wear a business suit, but none of my suits can compare with the expensive suits the other women will be wearing. I have a few tasteful sleeveless cocktail dresses, and I know one in particular puts me to great advantage, but I'm concerned about being sleeveless when other women will be in suits.

I need suggestions! I want to tastefully stand out from and have a more youthful and fashionable look than the socialites, while being appropriately dressed.

What do you suggest, either with respect to accessorizing my pant suit, or cocktail dresses, or buying something new. This thing is in a week!

i definitley vote against pants...and i don't think their is any issue about sleeveless...it's a fancy dinner...not an office party...and since you are probably still quite young...you can show more skin...and i mean arms...(not boobs!)...

i think 'pretty' is the key word here...nothing too revealing or sexy...tasteful and elegant...

and when in a situation like that...the biggest and best accessory i think you can have is a great smile...

i would wear small tasteful-'real' jewelry...they can be fake...but i think you need to wear a diamond or pearl stud earring for example...(no hoops or dangly bits of course) ...i would wear some small personal jewelry...nothing to fashion-y...
more timeless and classic...

wear a nice heel that is not too high and not too strappy...and that you will be comfortable all night long...
and i wouldn't wear a floral print...or any loud print either...

my 2 cents...:flower:
congratulations and good luck...

^ I agree with softie. Do really pretty and classic, no suits no flashy jewelry. Keep it simple. Do fresh make- up a la Calvin Klein. either neatly pulled back hair or big soft waves/curls. Keep in mind that everyone will probably be doing alot so you want to stand out with being pretty/simple/cute/and fresh.
I think you should do sexy shoes since the rest is going to be simple and girly but thats just my opinion, dont be too conservative with the shoes.

what about a wrap dress maybe ?? just my 2 cents, thats just what i automatically thort of when i read this post

The dress I wanted to wear is a wrap dress, i.e. the bodice wraps and ties loosely in the lower back. It's a deep red, I love it, but it's sleeveless, so I wasn't quite sure about it. Oh well, I'm one of the students I have to be memorable.;)

I was thinking simple yet pretty too. I have teeny tiny diamond stud earrings and a teeny tiny matching diamond pendant, so I was going to wear that, with just a little white gold chain bracelet. For shoes, a charcoal closed toe pump with a strap ankle and a 2 inch heel.

It is a fancy dinner, it starts at 6pm on a Monday night, so a lot of people will be coming straight from the office. I've seen pictures from previous years and everyone has a (navy blue or black) suit on. I don't think the women will be extravagant, just expensive and covered up to their wrists.

My dress is exactly like this one except it's BCBG not Calvin Klein, and the colour is deep red. I don't cross and tie it in front, I just cross it over once and tie it loosely in the lower back. Gah! That colour does not do it justice.

The dress looks a little sporty to me but might be better in the color you have....

I'm sure whatever you wear will be lovely....just smile and be happy... it sounds like it will be fun. Don't be intimidated by groomed women in killer suits....my entire family consists of them and they'll probably be very jealous of your young self in your pretty dress lol have FUN!

Makeup artist, what to wear?

This friday I have my first fashion show as a backstage makeup artist and I have no idea what to wear. I've been told the makeup artists wear black so I guess that is my color of choice. But, then after the show there is a gala then after party. Maybe bring a change of clothes? Help!

mmm i agree with the black thing. like a tank or tee, so u don't get too hot. and black leggings or jeans. I guess just casual but kind of plain.

otherwise the after party im not quite sure what you are supposed to do!

btw good luck with ur first show:flower: im sure you'll do great!

Hmm. For the makeup doing a black tank and jeans should suffice. Then for the Gala you could bring a different top & just some trousers, for the afterparty wear the same thing or change back into the black tank to keep it more sporty.

Also you could wear jeans the whole time, so jeans and black tank for makeup (with like some Chucks) then bring a lovely top (with some serious heels) for the Gala and keep the top or switch back to tank for the afterparty (which you could wear either the Chucks or heels to).

my make up artist just dresses casually... but you may have to find out what others are wearing backstage :flower:
