well its over 90 degrees here in mayfair at the moment so wear something very summery!!!!

Just wear what you'd wear at home - why change your style for us?

I'd say the best thing is to bring layers... that way you can add or take off to your outfit. Don't always expect it to be cool in London though... the centre of London is always a couple of degress hotter than the rest of the south of England.

Everyone is wearing long ruffly gypsy/hippy skirts at the moment - so if you want to look like everyone else they are the key!! Think Joss Stone, though I am a bit sick of seeing them myself.

What about vivienne westwood - she is one of our great london designers, i love her stuff.

Wearing layers is also good advice and carrying an umbrella at all times (get a mini one), english weather is so changeable.You can go out in the morning in the middle of rainstorms and find yourself boiling hot in summer weather by the afternoon, possibly why english girls have such an "eclectic" style cos we have to dress for all weather occasions all on the same day!

I agree wear what you normally would in your home town, dont change your style for us!

Tea at the Ritz will be fun. It's a pretty dressy affair. I remember when I went there my male companion tried to remove his jacket because the room was so overheated. He was politely but firmly told that he had to put his jacket back on. Poor bloke, he nearly fainted from heat stroke.

I think someone else mentioned this - don't change your personal style for london. people wear all sorts of things in london. in general though I think londoners are more conscious of trends. americans tend to be really casual...london is a bit dressier.
travellers to london should keep in mind the weather, though. one minute it's raining, the next minute sunny. and one minute you're hot and the next you're cold. so layers that can easily be taken off are essential. (as is an umbrella) and practical shoes. anything that could potentially give you blisters/arch pain/etc should be avoided, because you'll be on your feet a lot more.

Year after year people say the high temps in London are a fluke. Here we go again!

I'm headed there at the end of July and I was hoping for a break from the high temps we are having where i am but i guess not. i hate having to take the temp into consideration when picking out what to wear....it throws everything off when i want to wear specific things.

i guess if you have a 'quirky' outfit, don't be afraid of wearing it to london. you'd get more stares in the states... or do, depending on what kind of reaction you'd want out of people. (speaking from experience)

well like pucci_mama I suppose some people don't want to look too misplaced, because you don't want to stand out as a 'tourist'... I think a lot of it though is more practical. if you are travelling somewhere you should not sacrifice your personal style for the sake of your host country/city, but depending on where you are travelling, you do have to tailor it to suit the climate/conditions/potential cultural issues/how little or much you will be walking/etc...and in the big city, how much soot you're going to get on you for example, many things that are my own style (like a delicate vintage dress) I'd not want to wear for a day out sightseeing in london, because I wouldn't want to risk ruining it. or a pair of impractical shoes that are utterly adorable in suburbian america when you can hop in your car to get around would not do at all for a long day touring around london by foot.

what should I wear to London

The weather here is really hot today ( wednesday) at about29 -30 degrees c ( dont know farenheit sorry!) The weather reports reckons thundery showers tomorrow then more sun on fri,sat and sunday but cooler temps of around 22 - 23 . They reckon it will be mostly dry!This is an ideal temp for sight seeing in london, any hotter and you will melt! If this turns out to be wrong blame the bbc not me!!!!

If it is hot then head to one of the london parks - i like regents park if you are in the centre, hyde park will be full as there is an REM and then a queen gig there over the weekend. Also go to l'artisan du chocolat for the most divine choclates - lower sloane street, cant quite remeber the no but it is on the end of the street nearest sloane square. Gordon Ramsey uses chocs from here for his petit fours!

Even if it is really hot, as others have said, take a mini umbrella as you just never know!

what's london like in december? My mother is trying to pick our winter break vacation and she wants to go to London and Scotland (my dad lived there for a few years)... what does one wear in the winter? Being from around New Orleans we never really have a winter- when it's about 60 farenheit we break out the coats..

^ for london in december, just be prepared for cold and rain. it's not obscenely cold in the winter in london, but if you encounter rain it will feel a lot colder than it is. for scotland, you can count on rain/snow/sleet and bone chilling cold...a rainproof coat, a woolly scarf, and plenty of layers are vital.

yes REM are playing this weekend in hyde park, i guess it is sold out as it was postponed from last weekend.

London is decmber is cold but not bone chillingly, our winters tend to be warmer in terms of temperature these days. You quite often get bright, clear but cold days. The rain is always a possible even in summer!

Scotland will be noticeably colder being over 400 miles north and more on the latitude of the scandinavian countries, but I love scotland, it is stunning and so unique.Well worth a visit - Edinburgh in particular is so cool though at its busiest around hogmanay ( new year to you and me!)
Whether to visit in december - it depends what you want out of your holiday?
