Tips on Bag Cleaning and Maintenance

I have a white Marc Jacobs Stella bag which is veryyyyyy dirty. Any suggestions for cleaning it? White shoe polish or any specific cleaner? TIA!

I have a couple of handbags which would be ruined by rain. I got fed up of ony using them on dry sunny days, so I now take the chance with the weather. However, inside each bag I have folded up a plastic bag big enough to put the handbag inside, in case of a downpour.

z.cesca, I dip a soft cloth in water, then gently use an eraser to rub off the marks. Works fine for me :flower:

astatine, thank you for the advice, but that doesn't work for me... I am going to try some white shoe polish on the scuff marks and maybe a leather cleaner on the dirt...

^z.cesca, I mentioned this somewhere before but I have no idea where...my SA at Neimans told me once that she has a client who works for Bally, and apparently they sell some sort of polish that the woman uses to clean her light-colored chanel bags and it works wonders...sorry that I don't know more!

AHHHH I am so mad and I really need help. I just bought a pink caviar leather Chanel and when I carried it for the first time, I got denim dye all over it. I tried the Apple Conditioner, but its not working and I tried eraser method and its not working. Does anyone here know how to clean denim dye?
Thanks in advance!!

Does anyone know how to remove smells from bags?

I have a bag that I got that positively REEKS of perfume. I bought those Arm & Hammer baking soda boxes that have the mesh vents on the side and they seem to be working. Try putting one inside the bag for a few days and see what happens.

Thanks!!! I'll be sure to buy that!:flower:

When i got denim dye on my white bag, I used teh Apple cleaner, not the conditioner... came off easily... then I conditioned.

Bought a purse of Ebay. It was advertised as new, but I have my doubts. The hardware on the lock was scratched(no biggie, but not what I would expect on a "new bag") and dirty and it won't close all that well(frame bag with kisslock).
Is it possible to tighten the lock?

Also...The smell...I'm not sure if it's a factory smell or if the bag has actually been carried, but it has this sickeningly sweet smell - almost like overly ripe bananas.
I have the bag out to air, but so far it's not helping much.

just got my hands on a vintage chanel in a putty color (light bone ivory) it is a little dirty around the edges and there is a pen mark on the interior. the leather is sooooooooo soft and feels so fragile, so please advise me on something to use to clean and condition.....should i buy some AG??? any chanel owners that have used it? TIA!!!

I was reading a forum on eBay and someone posted a solution to remove the smell of smoke from clothes... KITTY LITTER?!!??! hahaha Anyway, here's what the person said:
"After washing some sweatpants 3 times, 2 times pre-soaking with vinegar and baking soda, and still not getting all the smoke out of this ebay purchase, I was ready to give up until I read a tip on another board.

Buy some quality kitty litter and put a bunch in a garbage bad. Put the item in the bag and seal it. Swish the bag around to get the item covered. Leave item in sealed bag for at least 24 hours. Then, voila! Smell is gone.

This is supposed to work for other smells /odors, too."

I am thinking of trying that on my bag that smells musky... hmm but wouldn't the item come out smelling like kitty litter? hahaha

I like the kitty litter tip. :D I bet it works because it is supposed to draw oders out and lock them in the granules.

I'm getting a little worried about this excessive heat, the fact that I don't have air-conditioning, and the effect this could have on my bags. Today and tomorrow it's going to be near 100 F, which will mean around 95 F in my apartment. Something tells me since it's not a prolonged period of time exposing my bags to this they'll be fine, but is there anything I should do? It's very humid heat so I shouldn't be worrying about drying out the leathers, right?

Any tips...?
thanks

Could you buy a portable air conditioner? And if it gets too hot, a dehumidifier? When I lived in Boston during the summer I had a portable AC and also those window unit fans, which helped with the ventilation.

P.S. Também sou flamenguista!!!!!! Uma vez flamengo, sempre flamengo!

So by asking me if I could buy one, do you mean that you think the effects of the heat on my bags are harmful enough to need one?

I do have fans... I'm just super cheap, I'd rather spend money on more bags and clothes than on air conditioning. But if it's going to mean bad news for my bags, I'll suck it up and buy one! ^_^

Since summers in Boston (which I presume is where you are) aren't thaaaat long, you should be fine without an A/C. You just have to take into consideration how "stuffy" the room is with the heat. Maybe if you take them out every once in a while to air them out... Also, if you are an indoor smoker, you should definitely consider an A/C or at least keep the fan on at all times, just to keep the circulation. :flower:

^Perfect! This is my plan then:

At night, I can get it pretty cool in my bedroom with massive fan circulations going, so I'll lay all my bags out on my bed tonight to give them a cooling off period. It will be like mundo's bag's private beach party :P

obrigada again
