Trends You Are Sick Of #1

Anyone loves an item but hates it as a trend?

Absolutely. Anything specific you had in mind? Often it is the actual phenomenon of something becoming a trend that I dislike. In many ways, the particular item loses its meaning or the story behind it, because as a trend, it is usually worn without referencing that meaning or story; it's only worn because it's fashionable.

And then, this thread is titled "trends you are sick of", which suggests one may have liked a trend at first. When you start to see something everywhere, it's very easy to grow tired of it. Like a song that you like or possibly love, but get sick of hearing every five minutes on the radio.

^ one example I can think is the Keffiyeh scarves.
I love them and variety of colors they come in, as well as seeing them worn by natives in other countries. But I'm not too fond of seeing a hipster wear it just for the sake of looking different. In fact they are becoming more popular amongst young teens, most of time not knowing the history of the accessory garment :(

^Very good example. In fact, it's in a league of its own, as it has a particularly loaded cultural and (I think?) religious significance. I'm not going to get into sensitive political issues here, but I assume we are thinking along the same lines.

But there are also many politically neutral/irrelevant items that become meaningless trends, worn just because they're trendy, and lose their practicality or intrinsic value. Hello, Uggs! But I'm not ridiculously strict about this, like it's perfectly fine to wear sneakers if you're not working out...my mind is fuzzy atm, I hope I am being clear and not too annoying:P

i agree with what you guys are saying, it was the same with long boho floaty skirts a few years ago - i always loved them because my mom was a bit of a glam hippy in her youth and i grew up loving photos of her in the 60's and 70's in her long floaty dresses and skirts. I started wearing vintage skirts and maxi dresses because a.) i loved them and grew up with my mom loving them and b.) i'm tall and have a 'flowy' style so those kinds of clothes look good on me.

Then ALL OF A SUDDEN everyone starts wearing these tiered skirts, circle belts and tank tops, regardless of the fact that 3/4 people wearing them were short and dumpy and tripped over their skirts with every step they took and looked just plain ridiculous. I felt like a fashion victim whenever i wore my (previously unique-ish) style :(.

Thankfully not everyone's doing the maxidress thing this time round (at least where i live) because i think some people have cottoned onto the fact that you have to have a certain height/build to wear them (case in point - i bought a slinky maxidress and my friend's boyfriend told me i looked really nice and that he liked my dress...hearing this, my friend went out and bought the same dress in a different color and ended up in tears because her boyfriend told her she looked short and pregnant in her dress :( lol)

ANYWAY yes, seeing everyone in an item just because it's a 'trend' kind of bastardizes clothes that have personal significance and gets my goat!!!

I cannot express how much I dislike drop crotch pants, even the name is horrible, and they are universally unflattering yet almost every designer has a pair, somebody must explain this phenomenon to me

OMG, has anyone seen the new sagging, skinny jean for guys?!!
:yuk:

Yes that's the frustrating part. I don't live in the best of areas and often time will get harassed about what I'm wearing only to find a few months later the same people who were taunting wearing the same thing. :innocent:

-long leather coats!
-matching the belt with your too short-too bright-too "sexy" shirt
-sportswear when you're not doing sport is just HIDEOUS
-pants with too many pockets and possibly strings hanging all around, yuck

:-)

Denim Leggings - the girls at my school are obsessed. Alright at first, but now I wonder why they don't just buy jeans.

Clashing colors and over-accessorizing!

When I told some girls that I wanted to wear an all black outfit, they INSISTED that I HAD to wear colored shoes or some gigantic accessory. By the end of the discussion, I was pissed.

WTF! Leave styling and fashion to me. Period.

Usually I would agree here but I bought a pair last week and I am in love

what in the world is this? i agree... terrible and of course the ppl who make it look absolutely awful are the ppl who should've thought twice about wearing leggings as pants in the first place.

Agreed! I have not seen anyone look good in these.

Also, I really dislike when girls wear the 'boyfriend' jean. They look messy.

I despise 'boyfriend' anything!

Especially when girls actually borrow their boyfriends' clothes and wear them in public. It is so sloppy and so like...'oooh, I am too cool and too in love, I just don't care...'

pls, you look desperate.

^ You can thank the Jonas Brothers for that particular hideousness.
