US Vogue April 2009 : Beyoncé by Mario Testino

Also, your arbitrary standards of "decent" and "vulgar" hold no weight when you consider some of the past stars on Vogue who are more "vulgar" in their public and private lives than Beyonce (the aforementioned Britney, Madonna, and Drew Barrymore).

I am still really struggling to understand how Beyonce is vulgar. But I guess, to some, simply being a successful African American woman who doesn't conform to traditional roles is vulgar.

not only vulgar, she's always look cheap.

and what does being African American has to do with this?

I don't think she's vulgar, but she is TACKY.

well, thinking well I also don't think Beyonce is vulgar as a person, I even don't know her!

it's her act what I find vulgar, her image.

Madonna never took herself too seriously. She knew what she was doing was vulgar and tacky, which effectively nulls the vulgarity and tackiness of her actions and makes them titillating instead.

I can't speak the same for Beyonce. She really thinks she's quite classy (*grimaces at image of Beyonce wearing curtains at the Oscars*).

diva is a female version of a hustla of a hustla of a hustla
*groans*

that's right.

This is the 'US Vogue April 2009..' thread. Not the 'Beyonce' thread :judge:

I actually like the cover. I think Beyonce looks really pretty.

I don't understand the problem with putting Beyonce on the cover. Is she any less deserving than Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, or Sandra Bullock? In fact, how does one decide which celebrity is worthy of a cover?

Whenever there's a wait between the posting of the cover and the magazine's actual contents, that vacuum always gets filled by idle argument - and ceases when the contents appear.

To me, it's a natural tfs phenomenon. Something has to fill the space. I read every post regardless. People might be saying something interesting.

Please calm down and take Beyonce-Madonna comparisons/character analyses elsewhere.

Thank you.

after reading through this thread i get the sense that some of the people in here who dislike beyonce never actually took the time to look at her career. that's understandable, if you don't like someone why waste your time looking at them?... but honestly some of the comments are just too harsh and tad bit ridiculous.

why compare her to paris hilton? they have absolute nothing in common. i feel like saying something like that is just mean.

the only thing i feel is wrong with beyonce is that she is the victim of a mother who has horrific and tacky taste in fashion. unfortuately her mother has a lot of say in what beyonce wears. that's why for most of her career her outfits were horrible.

I actually feel that Beyonce is a perfect example of someone who balances their career and their personal life well. Yes she may be "vulgar" on stage. However, she's no fool, she knows that behavior sells. Besides she has tons of songs and videos and movies where she's not being vulgar or sexy. So I don't see why she should be defined by only a part of her work.

this is one of the things that i secretly love about tfs. :ninja: it's exciting.

oh I get it

so it's ok for someone to be tacky if they're doing it intentionally but not ok if they're doing it on accident

there are people who have made the vogue cover who have contributed less to any profession they are in and have been rewarded nothing for their work, only the fact that they have pretty faces and are dressed in good clothes that someone else chose for them. Beyonce is a strong woman, talented, pretty, respectable, and great at what she does, she has her moments when she dresses well and not so well heck who hasn't?? If she was so bad then her success would not have lasted as long (same with Madonna who I find so revolting). She's a good role model, entertainers like her should be appreciated when you have the likes of Winehhouse and Lohan about not hated on.

i don't like beyonce but ill give credit when credit is due and she looks really good on the cover.

my reasons for disliking her is because i find that she is very fake and egotistic that's beyond confidence imo. she talks about herself too much and i hate people with big egos. her music is not my taste but some are very entertaining.

the timing is off to me. she's not promoting anything right now and there's really no hype for her right now (i think the single ladies thing has died out).. actually that's a good reason for her to be on the cover, she's not too overexposed right now- exposed but not everywhere like a few months ago.

I wonder what would happen if all people posting in this thread would be locked in one room with one copy of this Vogue issue :p

I don't like the cover but since the May issue seems to have models on the cover I will excuse this Beyonce one and wait patiently for the contents

surprisingly good cover, I am curious about the content (editorials mainly of course)

Exactly. Therein lies the key difference. for the former, it is all an act - almost a form of satire or mockery - so you don't take it too seriously. For the latter, they actually BELIEVE in it and are living in their la-la-land. M.I.A. is the best example of tacky-but-not case.

It's like the difference between people who can laugh at themselves versus people who take themselves so seriously it's as if there's a stick up their...bottom.

Okay, this Beyonce bashing has seriously gotten out of hand. In my opinion, even if Beyonce is "tacky" and "vulgar" as some of you say, the Vogue staff made her look as elegant, beautiful, and classy as they could. And that is all that is important.

Plus, Beyonce, acknowledge it or not, is a role model for many of today's young girls. Her songs are all about female-empowerment. What women or young girl can't relate to that?

I don't love Beyonce and her sartorial choices are certainly questionable at times, but I appreciate the message in her music. And I also appreciate the fact that she has set a decent example for African American women. There is no denying the fact that she is one of the most powerful women in the music industry.

If Nicole, Keira, and Angelina Jolie get covers once a year, then I don't understand the issue with putting someone as succesful as Beyonce on the cover of Vogue at least one time.

And on the topic of trashy, I can't believe that no one has mentioned the fact that Sienna Miller has been on the cover of Vogue two times!

Oh, we might run out of pages very quickly, depending on how long we're made to stay in that room. Because I'm presuming it's not an ensuite room...
