US Vogue October 2023 : Kate Winslet by Annie Leibovitz

What a revolting thing to do, very influencerish actually. To willingly associate your with such wickedness.

Anyway the editorial is lovely. Reminds me of home although that one shot with the deliberate lighting on her face is a choice.

Yeah, that was my reaction when I first saw it too. I would not want to bathe in Hitler's bath, creepy AF, but I think she had been through, and seen, a lot of horrific things by that time. There a muddy boots at the foot of the bath which kind of hints at a backstory and possible state of mind. Hard to judge what people do in wartime when we haven't had the same experiences, fortunately.

Not a fan of the cover. If the whole concept pertains to an artist, they should stick to it. Despite the vibrant set colors, the lack of text and Kate's outfit make it less exciting. But I could be wrong. I just received Dua Lipa's Vogue issue from last year, and although I despise the cover due to its dreary photo, the print version is definitely beautiful.

The cover is really uncomfortable to look at.

She's leaning on the frame, but doesn't really look like she's leaning on it at all but the frames and walls themselves are slanted post-production I think which gives this jarring topsy-turvy Escher look. Her feet are crisp as is her face but then everything else has an odd blur around her with the lighting hitting her differently to how the room is.

There's a lot happening and I don't get it. I will continue to be baffled by Annie's photographic and post-production semantics.

The edit itself is fine. Still strange in parts but is also at odds with the cover. There's so much pink and salmon in the cover when the edit is so damn green in setting and filtering.

I think it’s a great cover and the editorials are solid too. Very classic 00s American Vogue.

Also they are referencing Lee Miller in Hitler’s bath because Kate’s playing Lee in her upcoming film lol That’s arguably the most famous photo of Lee so I don’t see the problem here. I think it’s a great idea and it shows that Anne still has the courage and vision of a great photographer.

Yes, we know. I think Benn's issue was with Lee Miller bathing in Hitler's bath, not that they referenced it here.

The Hitler’s bath photo was taken in 2022 according to Leibovitz’s facebook page.

To me it feels a bit preposterous to criticize Miller or Scherman for their bathtub photos on the basis of it being influencer-esque or associating themselves with someone so evil. Sure they were controversial (deliberately provocative) but judging these people through a 2013 lens just doesn’t make sense to me. We are not who those photos were taken for, it doesn’t matter if it makes us feel icky. My understanding is that at the time, these were powerful tools for demythologizing Hitler, and kind of a massive F U to take them only a few hours after Hitler’s death.

The circumstances of the original photo cannot be recreated. Still, some things seem eternal. When it's a historical narrative involving a woman, is the most iconic part of the story a photo where she's unclothed?

I don't know how much war imagery or how many war films featuring men that have bath/shower scenes, aside from the showers from which no-one returned.

Not sure that’s really an apples-to-apples comparison since most war films and photography feature imagery that’s centered often on death or destruction. This movie is about a photographer, not a soldier, and this photo in question is her work, was shot by her and released by her, while she worked for British Vogue under a female EIC. Unless I misunderstand, you’re suggesting the prominence of the photo or the fact the movie covers the making of the photo is due to misogyny?

In any event plenty of war movies feature male nudity or men in various states of undress. There’s a notable coffee table book from Taschen that’s completely focused on nude photos of soldiers taken during WWII. That recent-ish Winston Churchill WWII movie with Gary Oldman did feature a rather unfortunate scene of him in a bathtub, even…

Yes I do understand! However I think it’s clear that she’s trying to capture the crew filming that particular scene instead of making a 1:1 copy of the original photo (which would be rather pointless and offensive).

I think it's interesting that if this was a Vanity Fair article, and the recreation of the bathtub image was included, I think people would look at it in a very different way.

Vogue
is deemed 'Fashion', but that is the very point of Lee Miller and her work, and how British and American VOGUE both showcased her photography to bring the realisations of war to the forefront of peoples minds at the time, especially for the US reader who was so far removed from the reality.

Wendell actually spoke about the image recreation on 'The Run-though' Podcast, which was actually staged by Miller herself. Upon hearing news about the fall of the Third Reich had made her way to Hitler's abandoned apartment directly from documenting and reporting from the Dachau Concentration camps, which is where the mud on her boots is from. Miller said that it was the only place in Munich which had Hot running water, and she placed the Portrait of Adolf Hitler on side of the tub to make sure people knew where she was and what 'Act of defiance' she was trying to create.

It is an important part in the upcoming film, and I think Important show the extent and depth of Miller's work and how close she got and how pivotal her images were in showing the real experiences of people living throughout WW2, especially to anyone who is reading vogue and discovering her for the first time.

Full body covers are incredible when done right (I've been blathering on about this for years) but this cover is comically garish. Possibly the most try hard (ob)noxious mainstream newsstand fashion cover in years. It makes Kendall Jenner's VOGUE covers look classy, effortless lol.

Typical Annie cover editorial. The color palette reminds me of her March 2006 Vanity Fair cover.

Nowadays editors feel like they must prove a point. Instead of a nice classic portrait they wanted that motion effect that instead made her look crazy and out of focus. The editorial would have been better too.

Incredible that I like more Kate's cover than this one
