US Vogue Winter 2023 : Florence Pugh by Colin Dodgson

Now I’m in the mood for pomegranate. That’s something positive about the cover I guess.

It looks like two giant claws are digging into her shoulder, on the cover.
The editorial looks sad, when food should be fun. None of it is bad, it's just low budget.
I like her tho.

I don’t expect anything and still they surprise me with the worst thing ever

Glad to see a talented actress, but the editorial intent is terrible, especially the photo with a fish in hand, the style is also terrible, if it was shot up to a few years ago, perhaps by a photographer like Peter Lindbergh or Mario testino the result would have been fantastic, but then, why do they use Grabriella so much? why was she chosen by Anna Wintour? it's a mistery
She was chosen by mark guiducci

Oh gosh, how I miss having 27 pages here over an issue. Not to mention the crappy scans lol. Now they publish everything very quickly and don't deliver anything. Sad issue judging by the main feature.

There’s something interesting and fresh about the cover in the styling to the set. But the subject couldn’t be more boring…

I remember a Meisel story with Carolyn Murphy in a restaurant, late 90s. Then was cool, here is Anna in autopilot. She doesn't care anymore.

Why are those refrigerator clips holding up her dress like they would a child’s school artwork? All the use of fruits and fish remind me of better portraits done by much better stylists.

First, if you're going to have a concept for a shoot really commit to it. Don't do some photos in the kitchen, some in studio, and one random one on red tile. Tell the story!

Second, one thing about Tonne and Grace is they know how to make clothing tell a story. They think beyond a singular image. GKJ could really take some lessons from that school of thought bc every cover shoot she seems to do is just a random selection of things she likes from the season. Very little through-line in terms of colors, shapes, proportions, etc.

We tend to look at US Vogue with the eyes and expectations of the past but it’s a totally different magazine today.
The objectives are different and Anna’s vision has obviously shifted, based on the rise of social expectations and some too-much-to-handle kind of reparations expected from the fashion industry.

It’s a lost cause to compare Vogue 2022 to Vogue from more than 20 years ago.

But just trying to appreciate it for what it is, it’s a lackluster subject/ story that hold weight only because it fits that new mainstream aesthetic Anna has developed for US Vogue in the last 5 years.

No one out of masses cared when magazines were good, they probably don't even see the difference, so why should she care? She is giving them what they deserve

Still, feels like careless autopilot. The worst part is this will be their cover for two months. The Industry now is full of clueless kids that think Instagram will save them from the magazine Apocalypse. If they have the right subject that sells to Gen Z "readers", no matter the quality.

The cover is fine, but some photos of the edit are bland & lifeless. It seems like a photoshot from any social media.

I'm getting so so tired of it all. Why does it have to be so awful?

One would get the impression that Anna's target market is now middle-America shoppers at the grocery checkout line that are obsessed with pop culture. They see the celebrity-of-the-moment on the cover, grab the issue and throw in their basket. Content is irrelevant at this point.

I don’t hate it. I don’t love it. I’m so here for Florence in general, so it’s nice to see her, but I feel like if you were going to go down the food/kitchen route with a concept then there are far better ways to have done this. Imagine Grace getting her hands on Florence and a hotel kitchen. Would have been pure classic Vogue.

The cover is… interesting. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it. I just wish they would have called Mikael Jansson instead of Colin. I remember Jansson did an editorial with Karlie Kloss in some chef’s kitchen and looked better.
