Vanity Fair June 2015: Caitlyn Jenner by Annie Leibovitz

I'm totally with Chanelcouture09 & Creative. It doesn't feel genuine with all this exposure on top of the whole Kardashian exposure bandwagon. It feels very lucrative.

It is a beautiful cover, I expected less from Leibovitz. I also think you must be so brave to go through this, it takes guts.

I read a the interview with her (and I really want to cheer for her) but this is so annoying:
'' If I can make a dollar, I certainly am not stupid. [I have] house payments and all that kind of stuff. I will never make an excuse for something like that. Yeah, this is a business.''
(from VF web page)

Talk about making money and people won't take you seriously, especially since you have enough money to last you a few lives.
If you're going through such a huge life change and you have the power and the voice to help others, be an inspiration.
Not saying this is only about business, but such comments are unnecessary.

I don't care if he took the Kardashian bandwagon to get this maximum publicity.
Bruce is a hero, a ex atlete with world records. Probably worshipped by many. And trapped for many years in the wrong body. This cover sends a positive message. This cover is trending. Lady Gaga, Obama, Tyra Banks and others are sending positive tweets. People with a huge amount of followers. The Jenners and Kardashians with their young millions followers sending positve messages by letting people know to be free. I hope it inspirate people to be free and to choose for yourself. I know from my friend that to tell your parents it's really hard. Maybe, because many older people know Bruce, it will help them.

And Laverne Cox, I probably lived under a rock, but until I googled her it said nothing to me. While I know Bruces name for years, even before the Kardashians fame. The age is totally different, i don't think it would be this good recieved if Bruce did this 30 years ago.., But both do good things ofcourse to spread a positive message to the world.

The cover is gorgeous. And Bruce, I'll call you Caitlyn from now on!

People keep bring it comments about money, and of course money is involved. But millions and millions of people in the world make money with out making a social impact that will help others.

Celebrities reach a bigger audience that people on the street, are they better? NO. But they can touch more people, and for that THIS means something.

Is Bruce the first man to do this? NO, we all know it. But he is probably the first doing it in front of the world. And the first public persona we already knew as the father of six, and now as a woman.

Is to easy to say "she is making money out of this", but at the end that is not you on a cover of a magazine exposing yourself to the world as a female.

Im used to read all kind of negativity here at TFS, but specialy here, on this thread? "it´s not like he is turning into a unicorn"? Realy?

Is sad that some people cant take the Kardashian hate aside and see the bigger picture of this moment!

from what I'm aware of from the show is that his own children haven't seen 'Caitlyn' so are we seeing her alongside his children at the same time? this transition should be a personal one not a public one, and by public I mean splashed all over Vanity Fair.

In fact all of her children have know Caitlyn already. Both TV specials were taped months ago. They did the Diane Sawyer interview before Bruce´s car crash accident -February-, and the KUWTK´s "About Bruce" even before that. Just becaused we saw it 3 weeks ago does not mean that the footage are new.

In this new article Cassandra and Brandon Jenner tells their impressions meeting Caitlyn. After all this people are family, its not like they saw her for the first time in the cover of a magazine.

I haven't read the interview yet but I agree that this "money" quote is all kind of wrong. We can't blame him for being honest but this just makes the excessive media exposure on the subject even more obnoxious. It basically confirms that she and the Kardashian clan had an agenda with all this. So does E!, Vanity Fair and everybody trying to make a buck out of this very private and sensitive subject. That , I find wrong because there doesn't seem t be a genuine concern for other people in the same situation or confused about their identity. It's just about money, media domination from the family and more money. I agree completely with Chanelcouture09 post, especially about Laverne Cox. Her approach to the matter and her advocacy have been done so gracefully and subtely this feels a bit overwhelming and aggressive. I still think that it's a beautiful moment. I think she's very brave and I'm happy that she can finally be her true self. Still I wish this whole media machine would slow down a little because it does feel like we're on another ride of the Kardashian bandwagon.

When I saw Caitlyn Jenner trending yesterday, I was like "Who is this?!!" And then when I saw the cover, it took me a minute to adjust my eyes and realize. My jaw was on the floor. What a statement! Bravo to Vanity Fair for doing this up the right way...although, I do think Vogue missed a big opportunity here. But, who knows, maybe Anna tried.

^^^Inspiration? If I had to take inspiration from someone this would be my latest option. People should be their own inspiration. Or if I had to be inspired by someone, it would be by a person who has achieved something: scientists, designers, photographers, sports people (I know he was), writers... But... by a trasgender? I see dozens in the streets and they make no drama about it.

I like boys and all, and I need no inspiration from other people. It's the way it is. I belong to no community. I couldn't care less about other homosexual boys and their lifes. And trying to make money out of a supposed drama rests some credibility to me.

This might be fun from a reality show point of view, from a magazine point of view... But when people go this deep it starts to be boring and a nonense to me.

Is to easy to say "she is making money out of this", but at the end that is not you on a cover of a magazine exposing yourself to the world as a female.

.

Well in the immortal worlds of Tyron from Game of Thrones "if you're going to be a cripple, it's better to be a rich cripple", and before people get their knickers in a twist, this line is a figure of speech, it means if you are going to be have problems, better to have problems as a rich person. So this idea that it is somehow harder as a public figure to present yourself as a female is all very well, but it also means that you have the best medical care and plastic surgery money can buy. And anyone that delved a bit deeper in transgender issues knows that is an enormous problem, so forgive me for thinking it is being in a cover of a magazine is nothing compared to working as a sex worker to pay for your ops.

This cover was probably one of the toughest secrets to keep - and Vanity Fair did it extremely well.

As we all know the Kardashian family keep little to the imagination with their day-to-day lives broadcast on reality TV show KUWTK. To keep this cover a secret the magazine had to pull all the stops, and according to Mashable here is how they did it:

1. The magazine hired security for the shoot and forced people to give up their cell phones to prevent anything from leaking.

2. Caitlyn Jenner knew about the cover since January although was given strict privacy terms (Fact: Jenner wasn't given any compensation for the exclusive).

3. The story and pictures were done on a single computer that was never connected to the Internet, with the assets put on a thumb drive every night and then deleted from the computer.

4. The story was even hand-delivered to the printer.

5. The Kardashians made sure nothing was leaked about Jenner's transformation in the promos for the new season.

"Bruce has no privacy; none of them do. That’s the deal they made with one another. When they’re silent on Bruce, they aren’t protecting him from the judgments of a cruel world; they are protecting Bruce’s exclusive That’s the deal they made with one another. When they’re silent on Bruce, they aren’t protecting him from the judgments of a cruel world; they are protecting Bruce’s exclusive," commented Taffy Brodesser-Akner, a reporter from The New York Times.

Fun fact: Vanity Fair's original tweet of the cover was retweeted more than 145,000 times in approximately the first four hours.

^I would have been very surprised if she was paid for this. This whole shebang smacks of a brand promo, and it's very lucrative for everyone. But to be honest at this stage i do not think any of the "Kardashians" is moved solely by money.

I'm really not quite sure what people would have expected?? It would have been absolutely impossible for Bruce to have quietly and privately transitioned into Caitlyn. Impossible. He already had been transitioning, and think about how viscous the paparazzi and tabloid mags were to him prior to his announcement. He lived a very public life, for the majority of his life, even before Kardashian fame, that fact can't be erased. So, by taking control of the public image of himself, Bruce has single-handedly and instantaneously turned popular and media opinion of him - now her - from suspicious, confused, and mocking to now almost unanimous and universal support, acceptance and love.

How fantastic is that! And it's really important in this instance to see the bigger picture of Bruce's transition to Caitlyn is. You can hate him for the Kardashian publicity, but what this does is expose America and the world to the issue of transgender identity. It forces even the most conservative individuals to have to confront the reality that this is the real deal and can happen to anyone - so much so that they may even know someone in their personal lives that could be struggling through the exact same thing, completely unsuspecting. To have such an icon of athleticism, masculinity, and good ol' American values end up coming out as a woman...that really is going to change the world!

Congrats to Caitlyn! This is really fabulous!

Les_Sucettes, i respect your opinion, but as i said before i think you are missing the big picture, so i let Laverne Cox speak for me on that topic. Because thanks to this, those "sex worker" your are speaking of could be benefit of.

And less people would need to "delved a bit deeper in transgender issues" to "knows that is an enormous problem". Thanks to going public Caitlyn -and others- is teaching my parents more about something they see but dont realy know!

Laverne Cox Explains Why Caitlyn Jenner Is Beautiful!

Laverne Cox took to Tumblr to share her thoughts about Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner)’s debut on Vanity Fair.

“Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities,” the 31-year-old Orange is the New Black star shared on Tumblr about the 65-year-old former Olympian.

Laverne added, “The love and devotion she has for her family and that they have for her. Her courage to move past denial into her truth so publicly. These things are beyond beautiful to me.”

"Most trans folks don’t have the privileges Caitlyn and I have now have. It is those trans folks we must continue to lift up, get them access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools and homes for our young people", she said.

Laverne is known for bringing the Transgender Movement into the spotlight since bursting onto the Hollywood scene.

Caitlyn Jenner Will Make Her First Public Appearance to Accept an ESPY
She'll take the stage in a nod to her Olympic past.

After introducing herself on the cover of Vanity Fair, Caitlyn Jenner is already receiving a flood of support for finally embracing who she is. And the sports world of her past is recognizing her impact too.

ESPN announced that she'll be receiving their annual Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYS on July 15. It will be her first public appearance since appearing in Vanity Fair.

In the 1976 Olympics, Jenner represented the United States and dominated the decathalon. As an Olympic icon and as a public figure, Caitlyn has now educated America about what it means to be transgender.

"In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible", Caitlyn said in a press release. "However, being honored with this award, which is named after one of my heroes, is truly special. For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers."

Previous Arthur Ashe awards went to Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, Robin Roberts, and Michael Sam. Caitlyn's big speech will definitely make this year's ESPYs a must-watch, whether or not sports are your thing. It's sure to be a tearjerker.

Caitlyn Jenner Talks About Her Mother’s Reaction and Transgender Fans
2ahwsb7.jpg

2q1gr4x.jpg

How Jenner will celebrate once the Vanity Fair feature hits newsstands.

Buzz Bissinger: What’s the first thing you’re going to do?

Caitlyn Jenner: I’m just going to go live life, I’m going to go enjoy life. I have nothing left to hide. I am kind of a free person, a free soul. [Up] to this point I would wear, you know, Bruce would wear, you know, sweatshirts with hoods on them so paparazzi can’t get pictures and all that kind of crap, and I didn’t want them to see if my fingernails were polished or, you know, on and on and on. It was just hell.

Bissinger: It’s like you’re being liberated now. It must feel great.

Jenner: To be able to wake up in the morning, be yourself, get dressed, get ready to go out, and just be like a normal person. That’s a wonderful feeling to go through life. I’ve never been able to do that; it’s always been confusion, it’s always been, you know, I’ve got one side [with] boy clothes, the other side’s women’s clothes. It’s like I cleaned the whole closet out—the boys stuff is gone, O.K.?

Why people already prefer “Caitlyn” to “ Bruce.”

Jenner: Even my son, actually, Burt said that to me one time. He goes, “To be honest with you, I think Caitlyn is a lot better person than Bruce.” And I really have to—I think he’s right, because Bruce always had to tell a lie, he was always living that lie, every day, he always had a secret from morning till night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets. It’s funny, my mother, my mom, she has not met Caitlyn yet. We’ve talked on the phone, she is coming down.

Bissinger: When is she coming down?

Jenner: In about a week and a half, O.K. I’m sending a plane to go pick her up, and my sister, because she’s 89 years old and cannot get on the airlines, but she has to come down and, you know, we have to do this.

Bissinger: You’re sending a plane out?

Jenner: Yeah.

Bissinger: You’re the cheapest person I ever met, I can’t—

Jenner: I know, but for my mom I’ll send a plane.

Bissinger: Yeah, but you, like, hunt for golf balls and—

Jenner: I know. What I told her: “Isn’t Caitlyn a much better friend?” Bruce, he would never send a plane. No, no, no, what a jerk the guy was, O.K., Caitlyn is like, “Send the plane. Mom, we’re sending a plane, we’re going to go pick you up and bring you down here.” [...] It seems like she has a lot more friends than he ever had.

What she hopes her mother will think of “Caitlyn.”

Jenner: My mom is, for 89 years old, is extraordinarily open-minded. I’d wonder how her reaction will be, but like most people, it’s all, all the emotions are in the anticipation of meeting you. Once they meet you and they spend five minutes with you, they go, Oh, O.K., I get it, big deal, let’s go on with life. And I think my mom will kind of be the same way, especially if Caitlyn keeps sending planes to pick her up and bring her down.

We had a conversation the other day, we were talking about a lot of things, and, you know, she goes, “You know what, I think I can have a better relationship with Caitlyn than I can with Bruce,” because we’ve always had a little tension in our relationship throughout the years. [. . .] And so when she ends the conversation, she goes, “O.K., good-bye, Caitlyn.” It was very funny, very cute.

What kind of feedback she received after last month’s Diane Sawyer special.

Jenner: The reaction was absolutely amazing. Even Mark, who is the producer on Diane’s piece, says, “Well, I had breakfast with Reese Witherspoon this morning and she couldn’t stop talking about you. All she wants to do is meet you.” She never wanted to meet Bruce, you know, but Caitlyn it is. It’s just that’s the way people are, and I understand that.

Honestly, since the Diane Sawyer piece, every day it’s like, it’s exciting to go to the mailbox . . . Because I get letters every day from all of these people from all over the world. I’ve gotten a lot from trans women, and telling their story and telling how excited they were to see the Diane piece. And so for non-trans people, just regular people who watched the games and now they see this, they’re just so proud of you.

But I so appreciate those things. I mean, I read every one of them, a lot of them I answer; in fact, the other night I got a letter from a trans woman in New York and she had so many interesting things to say, but at the end she left her telephone number, so I called her.

Bissinger: Really?

Jenner: I think she was very surprised I called. So I called her because for me, I am, I don’t, I’m new to this community.

Bissinger: You’re much nicer as Caitlyn than you were as Bruce.

Jenner: Bruce never would have called her; but anyway, Caitlyn calls—

Bissinger: He wouldn’t want to pay for it.

Jenner: Yeah, that’s exactly right. And so I thought I need to learn about the people, O.K., and here’s this lady living in New York state, she actually works in an operating room, transitioned 15 years ago, doing very well in her life, but obviously went through hell to get there, and I want to know these stories so I can—I have a platform that’s so large, how can I use that to make this better? And the only way I could do that is to talk to people.

Bissinger: How long were you on the phone?

Jenner: Probably close to 45 minutes, we talked forever. Actually I think I woke her up, because it was East Coast, it was three hours later. I think she was sleeping, and then I woke her up and she kind of was a little groggy, and I told her it was me and I got your letter, and I’d love to talk to you; and boy, she woke right up, and we talked for 45 minutes and she was so interesting.

How she thinks people will react to the feature and the first official photos of her.

Bissinger: Aren’t you scared, what’s going through you?

Jenner: No, I’m excited about that one. I’m excited about that one.

Bissinger: You’re not scared the reaction will be, Oh, God, what’s going on, I don’t get this?

Jenner: Honestly, I think the reaction will be, holy crap—

Bissinger: You look pretty hot.

Jenner: I mean these pictures—Annie, Vanity Fair, spared nothing doing it right, and the wardrobe, everything involved with it were just, the people were just great. It was, you know, two of the best days of my life. The pictures came out over-the-top great, you know, and I think people’s reaction when they see it, I was always worried—you never wanted to look like a guy in drag, you never wanted to look like a guy in a dress, O.K. If you’re going to do that, come out, you really have to look the part. You have to look very feminine, you have to be able to, what I call my presentation is extremely important because it puts people at ease. And if you can do that, O.K., people are at ease, they’re just comfortable being around you. And Vanity Fair, I think that when they see the pictures, the images, and all that kind of stuff, learn your name, people will probably go, My God, why didn’t you do this earlier?

How he hopes older generations will react to the piece.

Jenner: I hope they’re happy for me, O.K.? I hope that they all understand that life is very complicated. That [the gold medalist they remember] was me in 1976, I did that and I am extraordinarily proud of what I was able to accomplish. I make no excuses for it, but that was all of me that did that, it wasn’t just Bruce, it was all the things that—I was a dyslexic kid, I was suffering from gender dysphoria, I had all these other issues in life, but when I latched onto this thing called sports, I probably latched onto it harder than most kids did. Why? Because I needed that. Never knowing where I was going, but after years and years of playing the game and trying to prove my manhood, you know, next thing I knew I wasn’t trying to make my high-school team anymore, I was trying to be the best in the world at something. And this was my chance to go out there to the world and do something significant. And it became real important to me, and I put so much time and energy and work into this thing, and it was part of me. But it was all part of me: it was the dyslexic kid out there, it was the transgendered kid out there, it was Bruce out there, all these things, all the emotions were all—that’s what made me work so hard, that’s why I was more determined than anybody else. I went out there and did it. And I am extraordinarily proud of that. It wasn’t all of me, but for that moment, I can say I was the best in the world at that.

On the Vanity Fair feature meaning more to him in some ways than his Olympic gold medal.

Bissinger: You said something after the shoot that was incredibly poignant, I thought. You had the gold medal on top of the table, the gold medal you won for the Olympics, and you said that was a good day, but the past few days of this shoot have been better.

Jenner: They were.

Bissinger: Why? What did you mean by that? I mean, you were talking about a gold medal, something that everybody covets and wants, and yet these past few days have been better. Why is that?

Jenner: That was a sporting event; the last few days is about life, O.K., about living your life. About being true to yourself. I was probably at the games because I was running away from a lot of things, O.K., very, very proud of the accomplishment, I don’t want to diminish that accomplishment, but the last few days in doing this shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you “that a boy, Bruce,” pat on the back, O.K. This is about your life and about who you are. And the last few days have been absolutely amazing, you know, I never thought, you know, that some day I’d be able to do this.

On seeing “Caitlyn” all glammed up for the shoot.

Jenner: [During the shoot] I had this one time where I had not had a mirror behind me and they put this mirror up behind when I was doing this shoot. I had this rocking black outfit on, formal outfit, and I kind of, from a distance, looked in the mirror and I felt, Oh, my God. That’s the first time I’d ever really seen an image of me, of who I am. I mean over-the-top better than I thought it would ever be, especially at my age. You know, you think it’s kind of over with at that age. And seeing that image was powerful to me, you know, powerful. And I kind of looked at it and said, You know what, this is going to work, we’re going to be O.K. with this, you know. So yeah, we move forward. I am so excited about the future.

Wow, Graydon Carter just gave us the ultimate 'booyah!!". I'll be eyeing the circulation reports for this cover, part of me feels it will outsell last month's awful Star Wars cover.

*you know she is

I'm glad you live in an area where you see dozens of transgender people on the street and they apparently make no drama about it but this is huge for the transgender community. Perhaps educate yourself on who Caitlyn was when she was known as Bruce Jenner. Then take into account everything that she seemed to represent; the epitome of masculinity. And she was respected worldwide for being just that. Then think that while all of that was happening, she was hiding a huge secret from her family and friends and the rest of the world. Then add the whole Keeping Up with the Kardashians aspect to it and suddenly her life is even more public and every single thing she does is in the tabloids. That's got to be absolutely terrifying. And Caitlyn has 10 kids if I'm not mistaken and imagine how you would feel if you tried to explain to your children that their dad isn't going to be around anymore. You would want your kids to live as much of a normal life as possible, despite being in the public eye.

PS sorry if I went too deep and bored you

You see, if it will help I do not know. The judge is still out. I have no idea if someone. as previlged as her is the right person to the face of transgender people in the media, since she sets a standard that requires huge amounts of money to achieve and not at all the reality for most people, particularly When they transition at her age.
I follow a million transgender people on You Tube, and for me those are the people doing the ground work, they have to fight for their space at school, at work, in their families, in their day to day life, because they have to live like ordinary people inside the community, they cannot shuts themselves in an ivory tower if things get too much.
I will wait to hear their opinions, I will not dismiss this cover if people directly affected think it's positive, regardless of what I think of the brand, but for now for me it's just one more cover for the clan.

Let tolerance extend to those who express a variety of opinions on the topic.

They may make no drama "on the street" about it (are they supposed to be done up like drag queens and dancing to make drama about it?) but I guarantee they have not had it easy because of their transgender identity and continue to have difficulties from other people because of it, so having a person as high profile as Jenner is massively helpful to spreading awareness about transgender people. New York City folks may be fine with trans and gay people, but much of the rest of the country is very behind on LGBT issues - and Jenner will be a massive contributing force to changing that for the better.

Jenner is using her evil Kardashian konnections for good, as she has chosen to be very public with her changes.

:rolleyes: clearly this cover wasn't made for you. you've made the decisions that you are not the target for this, so I think its selfish to assume that just because you're in an area where trans people are "popular" that someone like Caitlyn doesn't deserve this recognition. I live in NYC, a city where the gay community is known for escaping to in order to live their life as who they want to be and trans, gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are still being bullied and beaten up here. Theres plenty of us here yet im sure it doesnt necessarily mean all of us are receiving equal treatment and/or acceptance.
