I bought a waistcoat the other day but I'm not that aure how to wear it without looking too kind of obvious...what do you think, what would you wear them with?

what do you mean looking too obvious??...
obviously what?...

I think she means obvious as in too easy...at least I think so...

Id wear it just as a top with a bra underneath and a pair of jeans. Whatever shoes.

Hard to explain, just not tryin too hard...
Diorling, i like your idea of it as just a top, i always just assumed id have to wear something under it..thanx

also, how does one post pictures?

well it really depends on the waistcoat - how it is cut, what the material is, etc. to be honest, I would wear something under it. I have a tiny vintage waistcoast and I've worn it with a victorian style blouse and jeans...it's definitely a quirkier look that way, imo.

I've also seen some good examples of girls wearing waistcoats in japanese street style...I don't have time to look for pics at the moment but I'll try to find some later.

I wouldn't wear a waistcoat with nothing under it (its a bit Posh spice). But otherwise I really like them.....

great topic ele, i think waistcoats will be huge.. short tight versions, in velvet/jeans/mens fabrics (winter) or in linen/cotton for spring summer.

for me it's tight fitted mens-styled waistcoats over a low V neck sleeveless t-shirt and maybe a full over the knee skirt (a la Dries) or over a pleated skirt, truth i dont like too much fabric worn under my waistcoats.. i'm not for the bra option either

just something tiny and maybe fun or boyish like a mens 'beater?' (to avoid and twist the 'romantic/sexy/inviting' cliche) , a sporty t-shirt with 3/4 sleeves, a tight poplin shirt with rolled up sleeves to 3/4 or something completly transparent/lacey.

i like wearing waistcoats with both trousers and skirts, not sure if i'd wear them with jeans though, seems a tiny bit tricky and sorry to say...predictable.
*they also look good over oversized or empire style dresses.. both in fastened and unfastened versions

when posting pics, how do you know the url of the picture, can you only get ones off the net?

Thanks

You have to get a photobucket account and you can post pictures from there or when you're posting here next to the "post quick reply" there's "go advanced" so you click that and attach an image from your computer.
Personally I really like waistcoats, I don't have one though.

If your waistcoat is well cut then I say go for it, ala Kate Moss or Stella McCartney.

yes, i agree tinuviel, if the shape is right and one is in the mood.. why not ;)

i had the same problem when i first bought a waistcoat ele, but once i started trying things i found it to be a lot more versatile than i imagined. i'v worn it unbuttoned over a loose fitting vest and skinny jeans, over lacy victorian style blouses and, as lena mentioned unbuttoned over a loose fitting empire style dress. iv also found it goes great with my full knee length all saints skirt too

I'm a big fan of the waistcoat, too!

I like them in all the ways suggested here. I've worn them w/ victorian style blouses as Utopia suggested for a dressier look. I've also worn them w/ simple scoop neck & v-neck knits and even turtlenecks for casual looks. And I like them w/ nothing if the cut is slim and not to low in the front. I'd wear it like this for a more formal event or a sexy evening w/ your sweetie!

I think waistcoats are hugely versatile. Experiment with it and have fun!! :D

A suit.

Waistcoats go with suits. Always.

Small exception made for waistcoats with shirts and/or boleros because Flamenco is cool.

I was looking for a waistcoat to wear at my friend's birthday and I tried on some at a vintage store in Helsinki but none of them would fit properly. If I found one that fits I'd wear it under a jacket like this:

And some other ways to wear a waistcoat:
Anna Sui S/S 2005, I like how they're wearing it, I don't like the exact things they're wearing but the look is cute.

I also think this is cute, it's Emporio Armani S/S 2005

Lagerfeld Gallery S/S 2005

waistcoats look good with a button down as pictured above. to jazz up the ensemble the button down could have thin stripes and really crisp cuffs, but i wouldn't button it al the way up..you could wear a skinny scarf knotted so it makes everything look very linear. and to dress down the outfit you could wear it with trousers cut similar to what kate is wearing in the picture posted or low slung jeans with a nice belt.

you shoudl look at alexander mcqueen ...i think he has a few waistcoats in his collections.
