What is the Significance of Walking Prada?

Anna Mariya U, Adina, Naty, Ymre

Ymre has a lot of potential.. but what happened to the first three openers?? FADE.... away.

I think Prada is a good launching pad, but in recent seasons it is no means a gaurantee, even if you open the show. Lets see where Katlin takes this opportunity. Whether russell marsh keeps her on his list is a big factor, or whether she catches the eye of a big photographer..

I think Anna Mariya did fairly well after her debut at Prada...she had a VI cover, a VP cover several nice campaigns. It was only a short momentum though...why? I don't know.

If we look at the openers of the past few years, succesful careers really vary.

FW 0910: Katlin Aas: We'll see, I don't know how long she'll last. She doesn't seem 'special'
SS 09: Ymre Stiekema: I have a feeling she'll followe the same career path that Toni has had after being an exclusive for CK twice.
FW 0809: Naty Chabanenko: Mehh, I don't know. She's doing alright with eds, not so much with ads or runway for that matter.
SS 08: Adina Forizs: Goooonnneeee
FW 0708: Irina Kulikova: Mainly a runway model nowadays, which is a pitty. BUT she does do all the big shows every season again and is good at what she does.
SS 07: Suvi Koponen: Star.
FW 0607: Anna-Mariya Urazhevskaya: See above.
SS 06: Sasha Pivovarova: Repeating this trick is awesome of course.
FW 0506: Sasha Pivovarova: I'd say this is the season where we started looking at who opens Prada and automatically give her an A-List status.

And if you look at previous exclusives, not all have had the most amazing careers ever. Gantz Gilles Zhavaronkova? Not succesful...Truus Hooiveld? Not succesful (maybe later)..Franziska Drude? Not succesful. Eva Arlauskaite? Not succesful.

But there are those that confirm the signifigance of Prada...Tanya Dziahileva, Vlada Roslyakova, Jourdan Dunn (she was not an exclusive, but let's face it...this is what made her happen)

So all in all, it really does depend on the girl...and because of that, I think we are putting way too much weight on doing the Prada show. Not everyone lands big *** careers, and some do. There's just a lot of hype, although I have to say that the hype factor of doing Prada seems to have died down after Adina Forizs's non-career.

Yeah girls like Doutzen and Trentini haven't ever walked Prada but have had very successful careers.

This season's casting was wierd, it seems Viktoriya didn't make enough of an impression on Russel or Muiccia that they would cast her in the show, and Toni's abscence is also strange. Glad to see Meghan back for some reason, maybe she'll get the campaign she deserved, also good to see Irina back, it was wierd last season with just Anabela. Freja, Stam, Vlada and Elise seem to be one and off regulars, they seem to be only cast when they suit the collection. Alyona on the other hand seems to have really made an impression on Muiccia.

When I started this thread I really wanted to see whether there was a pattern between appearing in the show and then getting a campaign. Does anyone know the other girls that were optioned for the SS09 campaign? I think Meghan would have looked good with Sasha in the SS08 Campaign. I think Toni and the rest of the SS09 campaign cast were seriously in the right place at the right time because of Meisel and his blonde hysteria. I wonder who would have done the FW08 campaign if the Supermodels didn't have such a massive comeback in that season.

with anna-mariya her case was the fact that she developed into a healty young woman and the standards of walking shows well....

Anna Mairya is only 17. She still has plenty of time to make a great career for herself. But maybe she wanted to finish school first, or something like that :)

I don't think you need to walk the show to get the campaign. I believe Lydia Hearst was in one, ad as far as I know she never walked.

I'm sad that Naty didn't become a star after Prada. She was the best opener in recent years. Her face is amazing.

^Me too, I feel she was robbed by the Evangelista, just as a lot of the break out stars from FW08 were by the Supermodels (Karmen and Diana F. come to mind). I feel bad for them because they had a very narrow window to be successful before the SS09 Blonde Prada/Meisel hystreia began which dictated the whole Fashion industry that season.

On another note, I wonder if Natasha Poly and Prada will ever collaborate in a campaign?

Prada is way overhyped when it comes to their cast. Yes they have introduced great models such as Sasha and Gemma that have become huge but I do believe like some of you that they did so because of their potential and hard work. Not everyone that has walked for Prada has been so successful and popular like them two not even Freja, Raquel, or Isabeli can come close. The past years Prada has failed to introduce us girls with the potential of these two that have made such an impression. They have introduced bland girls with in my opinion no potential who are just overhyped because they walked for Prada. There are exceptions like Sigrid and Toni and maybe Ymre but she hasn't showned us her potential outside of Prada to see if she can really impress. Sooner or later the Prada hype will die and I can't wait

I think it all depends. If nothing else major happens in Milan I think it's significant. But if you have a girl like Jac who comes along and has what might be the best Milan debut ever, suddenly the fact that you opened and closed Prada becomes a lot less significant.

I also posted this on the models casting thread, I didn't want to be repetitive but I figured it was also appropriate here

It is from IQ models blog, regarding Alina Ismailova's Prada debut

It's always so unpredictable, it's very likely to be even abusing for some casted and even confirmed girls, that one after another are being cancelled from the actual show, up to the very last minute sometimes. As an illustration to these words, 3 poor little newcomers were cancelled in only minutes before the show this season: after serial fittings and rehearsals, being completely dressed, with complicated make-up applied, hair fixed, eyebrows bleached especially for the Prada show... They've been just cancelled. Commanded to get undressed and leave backstage territory in minutes before the show!

It's such a huge stress for teenagers at the very beginning of their careers! Only the strongest personalities can oulast such painful experience and become successful afterall!

Assuming all these stressful things accompanying Prada show, the question is: why do almost every girl that dreams about top-model career, more than anything else in the world wants to step on Prada's runway?

The answer is simple: because it's PRADA!!! The label with the longest list of Top-models that it introduced to the world in previous years! So, everybody wants to be a part of this list no matter what, that's how a season after season Prada gets the best of the best newcomers attending its show in Milan, that's why it's so hard to get in there, that's why it's so easy to get out.

PRADA! Very likely the most influential fashion brand on the entire planet, definitely the brand with the most intriguing, hope-generating, as well as hope-disrupting show in the history of fashion modeling! And at the same time, this's the show where Alina Ismailova was catwalking on the first day of Spring this year!

wasn't Karlie cancelled last minute from Prada FW08? there were rumors about that anyway
and look how nice that turned out... just to give those three poor souls some hope :p
i think usually they cancel a look for various other reasons, it's not really about the girl

The word out there is that her look was cancelled minutes before the show... and then she came back and walked the SS09 and FW09 Prada shows, so you never really know.

It really depends on the girl and the people behid her carrer. A Prada exclusive (and even more so an opener) gives you instant attention and puts all eyes on you. I think many people are under the impression that when they have a Prada exclusive or open the show, their carrer is made, now everyone will want them and they'll fly to the top in no time (same happens with VI and working with Meisel), when in reality, they can only give you a head start, is up to the girl and the people working with her what to do with it., if they can survive in the industry on their on they'll most likely be back and if they don't.... they can't espect mama Miuccia and daddy Steven to babysit you and hold your hand the whole way through until everyone else likes you

^ Yeah, that is how I see Prada as well.

It's a launching pad, not a guarantee. Prada gives you the instant exposure and buzz, it's up to you to take it and use it to further your career. You can't just sit back, expect to be direct-booking only, skip castings, etc.

The last posts are spot on. I have no idea why anybody would think that Prada or ANY other jobs could give any "guarantee" of success.
But yes, Prada gives a huge exposure, so it make the promotion of the girl very quick to all possible clients.
I dont think there are more or less chance to do great because you do Prada, just...you know more faster how the things will go:) as if does not work after it, clearly there is no big chance that it could work later...

I think a lot of you forget that many girls dont succeed, because of their own fault, (weigh issues, personal reasons, skin issues...) so it is a bit harsh to list girls who did not succeed after prada and to tell 'Prada did not help", without knowing individually the reasons why the girl dont work...

Prada is way overhyped when it comes to their cast. EXACTLY -_-

^ Already wrote that in her thread: I don't think Katlin is too boring (as many said it before), there's defenitely potential in that girl! But I just don't understand why this girl was chosen for a PRADA show - and then even opening AND closing it  I really don't get it. It seems like they randomly chose their models, only considering how new or "unjaded" they are. And not because they really fit in the whole Prada-theme ... that's why the shows really become less and less interesting to me.

Apparantly Alina is going to get the campaign? Atleast that's what the buzz is on TFS. A couple of people have said so, but haven't confirmed it themseleves or by another source. Aline is very Prada though...I think we've learned by now that opening and closing doesn't guarentee you the campaign, so I'm uncertain about Katlin.

Is that about Alina Ismailova? That would be uninteresting...I want my Ymre...

ETA: Never mind....that was just some speculation in her thread (maybe she'll get the campaign!) which turned into a rumor (she'll get the campaign!)....fire travels fast :innocent:

I doubt the campaign has been cast already anyway, so....
