Thanks kimair for posting!
Mischa Barton wearing Behnaz Sarafpour's glittery cape; 8-pg editorials inside. Marie Claire is trying to cash in on their cover star's fame, as they normally don't give this many pages to celebs, not even to J Lo.
But this is a pretty satisfying January issue. They still use clothes from FW04, but they are very well styled. Long Missoni dress + denim jacket, MaxMara studded knit cardigan + aviator glasses... Good stuff.
Cosmo turned in a surprisingly readable issue, too. Kate Bosworth looks good on the cover, and I am not even normally a fan. The yellow top is from a relatively obscure three-letter brand, but I don't have the mag with me right now so I can't make a proper reference, sorry. The jeans are Chip & Pepper. The earrings are a very nice touch and Bosworth looks best when there is some color on her lip.
The two editorials inside are devoted to designer gowns (in a party setting) and early spring/resort stuff, something you would wear on a yachet. Yes, that's the life of a Cosmo girl, cocktails and making out on a yachet.
This is a terrible issue and will be going straight to the bin (or resold on eBay) as soon as I receive it. The only good thing is the Oscar de la Renta dress on the cover--it's one of the best from those stellar spring collections. But now that it's been featured on the cover of Elle, it prob. won't get the proper coverage it deserves from Bazaar or Vogue. Blah! However, if you are interested in the new Dior girl, a.k.a. Elvis's granddaughter, she has an all-Dior editorial here. She was on the cover of Vogue alongside her family last August. This has got to be the most concerted effort from the industry to make someone this young a star. I don't see what the fuzz is about.
The Oscar de la Renta dress in all its glory:
Kristen Davis is on the cover of Lucky but I can't find the image yet. But it's a slow month at Lucky--I can't picture it would put together an issue as uninspring as this one. For starters, a Marc Jacobs frock is on the cover. They just used his clothes for Rachel Bilson last November! Kristen Davis, though naturally beautiful, looks bad due to the rigid hair and the burgendy on the dress doesn't play off her brunette hair too well. Lucky's covers have never been strong except when they use Josie Maran [hehehe so I really like her], but this is such a wasted opportunity; you could hardly go wrong with Kristen Davis.
The contents are too disappointing, if not more so. One of the best things about Lucky is diversity; it has several "themes" on rotation so the creativity goes beyond styling or wardrobe selection. Therefore, even when it is a slower time in fashion and most of the new-season stuff isn't available for editors yet, Lucky will do something like "what to buy now, and how to wear it later" or other fun things like that. No such luck this time. Even their up-and-coming designer section sucked. The "how to imitate a style icon" section is cheesy.
So, a quick recap because I've just flipped through a slew of magazines:
Glamour: A- <-- It also has a stunning makeup editorial using up-and-coming actresses, including Paz Vegas. This is what Allure should be like.
Marie Claire: B (same as usual)
Cosmopolitan: B (better than before)
Lucky: C- (an abberation, I hope)
Elle: D (continues the downward spiral)
And that's Lindsay Lohan on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. This year, Lindsay's been on the cover of Interview, Rollingstone, Jane, and EW. I expect more.
Gwen Stefani is also on a gazillion covers ranging from V to Seventeen, and she looks the same on every one.
Girls that I'd like to see more often:
Scarlett Johansson (got Elle and UK Vogue and W this year, is Cosmo next? Better yet, GQ)
Keira Knightley (covergirl for Elle in 2003 and Cosmo in 2004. She deserves to be all-over the place. You can't put old hats Nicole Kidman, whom I love, and Renee Zellweger and worse Gwen Stefani on the cover of every magazine imaginable and not the Best Ingenue)
Kate Beckinsale (she's Vogue material and both sides of the Atlantic have to catch on)
Rachel Weisz (ditto)
Naomi Watts (Both her W and Elle spread were lazy. She is quite a regal fashion chalemeon and deserves a star editorial in Vogue or Bazaar)
Paz Vegas (super hot, already on BlackBook)
Eva Mendes (Elle needs to put this exotic beauty on cover and stop the nonsense with its happy-go-Brazil bore)
Zhang Ziyi (okay, too much of a strech, but I can dream)
Don't want to see:
Gwen Stefani, Renee Zellweger, Christina Applegate, Jennifer Aniston (as congenial as she is), Catherine Zeta-Jones, Beyonce.
