Those videos of animals being skinned alive are horribly inhumane.

The worst part of those videos is that they are staged. "Animal Rights" activists are killing and torturing animals purely for propaganda purposes.

One scene in a recently-released video claiming to represent fur practices in China shows a man wearing tattered shoes, hitting a fox on the head with a knife, temporarily stunning but not killing it. He then struggles to skin the obviously alive, moving animal, alternating with beating it with the knife. The animal struggles so much as to make the job impossible, and a shot is seen of the man's shoes on the animal's head. Clearly, skinning an animal alive is difficult and dangerous.

'The China Fur Commission and China Leather Industry Association challenged the authenticity of the material, saying: "Pictures showing animals being skinned alive are obviously plotted. All those with common sense would not choose this slaughter method to attain fur." The government of Suning County, Hebei Province also issued a statement outlining welfare practices on its fur farms, calling the alleged practice of skinning animals alive "unimaginable", and urging Swiss Animal Protection Organization to "respect the truth".'

Animal rights activists have a long history of faking/staging these videos:

1972: The Canadian Association for Humane Trapping produces a film entitled They Take So Long to Die. Scenes of animals suffering horribly in inappropriate traps are subsequently aired on CBS television. It is later learned that the animals had actually been caught in the wild and released into a compound to be trapped and filmed at leisure. The film is withdrawn from circulation, but the footage appears in another film, Canada's Shame, produced by the Association for the Protection of Fur-bearing Animals.

Mid-1980s: Greenpeace Australia distributes film of two men mutilating live kangaroos as part of a campaign to ban 'roo products in Europe. Greenpeace only withdraws the film after a court convicts the men for breaking the law, and concludes that they were paid to do so by the film crew.

1997 - 2003: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals releases edited videotape of a facility in Illinois which shows acts of cruelty to foxes, plus electrocution of foxes, a method of euthanasia not approved in Illinois. PeTA claims the footage depicts "modern fur farms" in the US, and complains about lack of regulation.

As of 2003, PeTA still has not delivered the full, unedited footage with sound to the fur industry, the media or officials in Illiniois (who had been forced to prosecute the owner from the edited clips only). Meanwhile, PeTA has exported the edited film around the world, misrepresenting its source and using it to smear responsible fur farmers while raising donations for its coffers.

This is why I utterly, utterly despise the "Animal Rights" movement. They are completely hypocritical, and apparently think nothing of lies, libel, and even killing and torturing animals if it will serve some propaganda purpose.

While you did make some valid points, I think you gave in too soon. The animal rights movement does have propaganda, especially PETA. They do choose what and what not to show and state as facts. But for the most part, they are not staging the videos.

Why wouldn't a fur farmer skin an animal alive? I know most would not. However, do remember that there are horrible, disgusting people in this world. There are people who torture and kill animals for fun. There are people who have no regard for animal life, especially if its already going to die.

Are you really going to believe all of your 'sources' for propaganda? I'm sure some of it is true. Though I don't believe that would be enough information to say that all videos and all information is gathered that way. I don't believe your paragraph regarding the Chinese can be accurate. Of course they won't fess up; they need to save their ***es. And, I am not solely saying this about its fur industry, but the Chinese government is FULL of propaganda.

Some people argue that fur and leather are the same. Sure, they are the same if you plan on eating that racoon, mink, fox, etc. But no, they are not killed for food and their skins; it is solely for the pelts.

The reasons why a fur farmer wouldn't skin an animal alive are:

1. It's very difficult and awkward, as illustrated in the video
2. It's dangerous, as the animal is likely to struggle and bite.
3. It's time-consuming, as illustrated in the video
4. Spurting blood stains the fur (whereas a dead animal's blood coagulates, and won't bleed on the pelt)

Fur farmers are in business. Their livelihood depends directly on the quality of their pelts. It defies all logic to believe they would intentionally damage their valuable product as a matter of usual practice.

I have no particular respect for the Chinese government, given their history of human rights abuses. However, organizations like PeTA and ALF have very poor reputations as well. PeTA has been killing animals by the thousands in their facilities, and its employees are facing multiple felony counts of animal cruelty; and ALF involves itself in arson and firebombings.

In this instance, I think the Chinese government's response is actually very reasonable. And given the fact that animal rights organizations have staged similar films in the past, it seems likely that this film was also staged. The fact that the Swiss organization that originally released the video has refused to provide any details on where exactly it was shot is also suspicious.

I did not "give in" too soon. I merely used common sense, asked questions, and did some research, rather than just accepting propaganda.

At the risk of being flamed, I would have no qualms about wearing fur because I'm not really an animal lover.... I would never mistreat an animal personally, but I'm not really into them either so if I could afford it, sure I would wear fur. Real fur is out of my price range right now though.

I love real fur, I don't have any YET but as soon as I can afford some I'll have lots of fur coats etc.

It's strange...I'm a fashion student and out of the 30 ppl in my class not many seem to be very against fur. So many of them are completely unopinionated ...it's absolutely beyond me. I had more passion when I was 8

One of the girls wears fur coats...my tutor loves them, and there are a few other people with fur pieces.

everyone tries to sound so sophisticated, smart, intellectual, etc in this thread. The whole issue speaks for itself! Take a look at a dead animal, one you killed to wear. Need anything else be said?

I think you've described pretty much the entire shoe and handbag sections of this site! :p Go on, go to the Hermes and Louboutin threads, and tell them off...

Never Again

I originally come from Russia where fur is extremely popular. I used to have a full length blue mink coat and a short fox jacket. After moving to the states I found out how those animals are tortured and killed for their beautiful fur. I find it sickening. I immediately took the coats damaged them and threw them out!!! It's better to wear diamonds than fur!!!

^ Yes, because there are no ethical issues when it comes to the diamond industry...

I don't eat meat, and obviously I'm against fur as well, but I must admit that I do own two mink coats and a few random fur pieces (a mink hat to go with one of the coats (yeah :p ), a huge fox collar and a white fox fur collar~thingy with a matching hat) To my defense, all the fur pieces are hand downs from family members, and I've been in a position where I've thought it would be rude not to accept them  I refuse to wear fur even if it's hand downs, because I don't want to be a walking advertisement for fur. I know that people sometimes copy what I wear (or try to. At least that's what I like to think) and I'd hate to see that happen with fur. I've only once worn a fur coat, years ago. It was Christmas eve and I was working and it was totally freezing, and back then I figured that it would be better if the dead animals came to use than to have them be killed for nothing. Well, according to my boss one of my co workers had asked what "that vegetarian" did in a mink coat, and I realized that I had no logical answer. That was the first and last time I ever wore a fur coat. Sure the fur is nice and soft to the touch, but if you want to touch fur I'd recommend getting a pet :p

Oh, and Luna~ Those Chinchillas you posted on page 1 are beyond adorable!

I don't have any fur in my wardrobe, and don't want any. I get sick everytime I pass by the Holt Renfrew fur salon. If I did want a fur piece, I would get synthetic. It looks just as good and no animals had to be killed.

I dont have any fur in my wardbrobe. I'm a vegetarian I love animals, I remember wanting to be a vet when I was little, and then a zooologist. Right now I can't really afford nice fur weather or not I wanted it but if I ever could I'm afraid to admit I think I may buy fur from a rabbit or something where it's not killed primarily for it's fur. I'd never buy lepard or zebra or something like that though. But when I think about it, I have a python bag and I want a croc clutch, and thats not much different since I think they are killed primarily for their skin. I guess I dont feel as bad for a croc as I would for a lepard.

i just don't see how it's different to kill an animal for its meat, or it's skin(leather) then to kill an animal for it's fur. These are all things that people could do without if we chose too.

And you don't see Peta people outside McDonalds protesting....

I'm sure those cows were glad to die, whereas only chinchillas and foxes want to live!

I think, in this thread, the word "certain" should be thrown in front of the term "animal rights activists" Because that isn't what all of us are about! not at all. Peta is giving the rest of us that care such a bad reputation, I'm so sick of it!
I'm a firm believer in spreading truth, not opinions, helping and doing what I can to make a difference. Being a voice to those who cannot speak!

I don't see how throwing a pie at anna wintour, or a bag of flour at paris hilton is gonna help my cause, or the animals. It's just utterly rediculous! (although, paris hilton is too, lol)

My take is that I dont wear any animals skins of any kind. Even leather. Some people don't care because "cows aren't as cute as bunnies" but animal skin is animal skin to me. I stay away from it all, and it's very hard! I don't throw pie on those that wear it, or red paint...anything! Thats their choice, and if they want to hear what I have to say, I'll tell them.

That seems like the most reasonable sort of attitude- I mean to each his/er own right?

Except for Louboutins?

No. I did that.
I wanted to show my mother a picture of them when I bought them online. She lives far far away from me so I could only show her pictures. I blocked out the price because she'd kill me if she found out how much I paid for a pair of shoes I can barely walk in more than an hour.
She didn't notice that the price was blcked out. She's very fashion savvy, but not at all computer literate:lol:
^^ from the Louboutin thread...:D
