To the people who are saying that "if you wear leather but are against fur you are a hypocrite"...

That is sort of like saying, a human rights activist who focuses on gay marriage but doesn't pay attention to sweatshops is a hypocrite.

I think that as long as you know what is going on, and you actually are talking about the specific issue you are passionate about, you should keep doing it! It is better than nothing, which is what a lot of people on earth are doing.

I see what you mean.

In my post, I stated that I eat meat and wear and carry leather shoes and handbags. In my minds eye, this is 'normal.' I'm not doing anything that the majority of people don't.

I don't feel like I'm being a hypocrite by vouluntary opting out of fur for personal reasons.

Are the protesters saying that if we use leather we might aswell go whole hog and wear mink/chinchilla/etc? No, I very much doubt it.

i don't care if it makes me a hypocrite, i wouldn't wear fur, it's ugly and cruel. yes, i eat most meats (well chicken, beef and fish) and wear leather. it is different from the meat industry in the rules and methods of killing. the meat industry is far more controlled and regulated. everyone should buy organic produce and try not to buy it from conditions wear the animal is kept cruelly. which i try to at all times. but have you seen how animals are treated when it comes to producing fur? cats, minks etc are skinned alive and kept in cramped horrific conditions solely for fashionable fur.

leather is a by product of the meat industry. this means there are barely any parts of the animal that is not wasted. in tibet people would never take an animals life and waste it, i don't see why we should be any different. we've been eating meat since we came onto this earth and we will continue to.

I used to be so anti-fur, but lately I've been having second thoughts about vintage fur.

edit. I haven't bought anything yet.. but I have my eyes on a furry hat

I don't own any fur, but I think as long as it's vintage, it's ok, but I'm against new fur. Vintage fur seems justifiable to me.

I don't eat meat, and I have one "piece" of fur, it's just a detachable collar on my coat. I wouldn't buy like a fur coat or anything like that. But I am sorry to tell you that animals in the meat industry are treated pretty badly as well. You should check out "Meet your Meat," but probably don't watch it if you like mcnuggets. :p

Hi guys,
I am in desperate need of help! I have done a search but can't find anything that answers my question.

I have just bought a vintage faux fur coat of eBay - now, I am totally against wearing real fur but I wanted something to wear over Christmas when I go out. So I bought this vintage 60s faux fur coat, only problem is...it looks real. I don't think the fur feels real (due to animals I have stroked and felt their fur) - it feels kind of 'harsh' and like a 'wire' feel, but still feels somewhat soft and smooth when I stroke it downwards...but it looks so real and I am a bit scared of wearing and for some reason feel guilty for wearing (maybe because I am totally against fur and now I might be wearing a coat that is fur...?)

The coat is made by Astraka, it says the 'pile' is 100% acrylic, back 100% cotton and the lining is 100% viscose...could anyone help me with this? Do you think it is definetly FAUX fur?

^It's really hard to tell judging from the photos, but if the tag says it's cotton, viscose and acrylic... it should be. I don't think they would sell real fur as faux! they'd make less money hehe

maybe you should take it to someone who understands about it... if it really is faux, it's up to you to decide whether or not it's OK for you to wear it... Personally, I wouldn't wear fake fur because I kind of feel like it's endorsing real fur... but it's up to you. :)

In case you find out it's real, I suggest you donate it to someone who really needs it (if you don't like real fur) i.e. a homeless person who's bound to be unprotected during winter, etc.

good luck!

NO.

The only fur-ish thing I'll wear is alpaca, and that's becuase there is no cruelty or harm caused to the animals. The alpacas are shaved, and then let go.

Leather I'll tolerate for shoes, belts, and bags, if only becase non-leather versions are hard to come by. (and someone will eat the cow, so it's not a total waste.) No coats though.

This reminds me of nazis shaving heads for the war effort, doing human experiments, or using their skin to make lampshades.

Not that I'm arguing with you. I wear leather, eat meat and would wear fur. The whole thing just kind of bewilders me. It's like we're all too emotionally attached to these common things.

For those who are saying it's hypocritical to eat meat and not wear fur, well meat is sort of necessary. Some people will be hungry if all they eat is vegetables.

But fur...fur is a superficial item. There's no difference between real fur and faux fur.

Yes, it is definetly fake.

I might sell it though, because I feel uncomfortable wearing it. To be honest I was only going to wear it over Christmas and sell it anyway - but still feel uncomfortable about wearing just over Christmas even though it is fake. I thought it was a very good find too, only cost £10.

I have fur, but not by choice. Just some coats from when I was little (rabbit), and some that were given to me. (I think they used to be my Gran's.) Nothing too fancy. I don't like them though. I'm against using animals for fashion. Also, they make me sneeze. lol. I have nothing against people who wear fur, it's their choice, and I feel I should respect that.

That doesn't even make sense. Vegetarians can have balanced diets and so can meat eaters, hunger has nothing to do with it. Vegetarians don't just eat vegetables, they can eat dairy, eggs (usually free range) grains and even meat replacements. The reason that I disagree with the people who are saying that killing animals for fur is sooo inhumane, and killing animals for meat is fine is that it's not. Animals killed for meat go through some SERIOUS torture before they get to your plate, the difference between people who eat meat and people who wear fur is that the people who wear fur kill the animal once. Meat eaters have got to kill another one every day or two. :innocent:

also Innocent Fairy: If it says Pile: Acrylic it must mean the fur stuff. So I think it's faux for sure. :flower:

I understand the cruelty of fur industry, but there's nothing I can really do about it.

I have a rabbit fur hat, rabbit fur collar, fox fur pillow cases, rabbit fur vest (but the furs inside, i think the exterior is wool)

I thought that was the case! Thank you very much for clearing that up for me, when I bought it off eBay it did say faux fur anyway - but because it looks so real I felt somewhat disturbed by it (it doesn't feel real). I do think it is a very pretty coat, but still undecided about keeping it. :(

I would only wear vintage fur myself, but I can't figure out why I think vintage fur is "more okay" than new. Why?

I may be your object of hatred now, but here is a pic of me in my ridiculously cheap, vintage persianlamb furcoat. In Norway it tends to get really cold, so I appreciate it alot during the really frosty days.

I fully understand anyone who feels kind of disgusted, but well, it is my choice.

Ouch. Never thought of it that way. (being of Polish heritage, I'm very close to the Holocaust, if that makes sense.)

I suppose part of my occasional leather-wearing is just laziness. Maybe becuase it's just easier to buy what's readily available, rather than spending some extra time to find synthetic materials. Shame on me!
