My whole thing with PETA is this. Their tactics make them look like a bunch of pranksters, not an organization trying to change something for the better. I mean what they do is basically guerilla warfare, just on a really silly level. Do they really think that the people sitting at a fashion show are going to see them crash a runway butt-naked and think to themselves "maybe these lunatics have a point".

Then there's that whole throwing red paint on women wearing a fur coat thing. I don't know if it's as big as it used to be, but here's my thinking. To the people who do it, wearing fur is wrong and sad....and that's fine. But to then take red paint and ruin the coat made from however many skins just seems like such a disgusting waste. I mean, at least before the coat is ruined it's being put to use, so the animals didn't die completely in vain. But to destroy the coat and have it most likely wind up never being worn again....doesn't that seem much worse?

that makes too much sense.

I love fur, I swath myself in ermine every night and pose in the high polished piece of onyx on my wall that I use as a mirror.

And the fact some designers give PETA invites to their shows to attract more publicity:innocent:

Exactly.Protesters acting insane and harassing people only makes the word "protester" have bad connotations.Agressively protesting doesn't really work ,it only serves to annoy people.

Throwing red paint onto people is the same thing as a group of hunters burning down the headquarters of an animal rights foundation. It serves no purpose but to upset the opposite party. And it's not right.

I agree with alot of the things you people said.I think it's wrong to criticize those who wear fur because it's a personal choice, just like being a vegeterian is a personal choice.I have no right to tell people how they should live so I won't, and I wouldn't want someone doing that to me.
It's quite a bit different when these choices are affecting others. It's no one's business what you do until it's hurting someone; then it's fair game. I'm not saying this isn't a complicated issue with grey areas, but no one is immune from criticism. It's good to examine these issues as a society.

Actually, everything affects others. Eating meat (most specifically beef) has consequences far more vast than killing animals for skin. A lot of beef-cows are raised on deforestated land, which completely changes the climate dynamics of large areas and ultimately leads to desertification. Wearing fur can lead some species to endangerment and extinction, but so does deforestation/desertification. It's good to examine these issues as a society, as you said, but it's also good to look beyond animal "cruelty."

I suppose, but cant you use that arguement for basically anything? It just depends on whatever it's itching you that day, no?

how is it affectign others?

animals arent people.

animals aren't people, but people ARE animals, and the only animal to systematically mass murder innocent beings for no necessity other than vanity. this is completely upsetting to any existing balance, we're not despots of this world we are part of it, maybe we should start acting like it?

This issue would depend on your own views. If you're a PETA person, then you hate animal fur severely. It's best to have faux fur so that the animal cruelty people getting on your case. There's great warmth with furry garments in cold weather. That's why you see a lot of the furry garments in colder times because it provides great warmth. If you want some warmth from the cold, fur is the way to go. It would be best to find faux fur unless you really like animal fur. That's what I think about this.

That's why I think peta is kind of a stupid organization. It does good at raising awareness ,but lashing out at people for eating meat or wearing fur/leather/other materials is no better than meat eaters antagonizing vegans. All it does is increase negativity.

Agree with you & Spike about this ... judging harshly & violently doesn't help any cause.

I know a girl who went to a shop in Liverpool, England to get a fur trimmed coat (by D-Squared) and the only reason she became aware that they sold the coats was a "Peat protest" outside (which consisted of literally 3 people!). Talk about back-firing!

I just love real fur, nothing is better.

^ Reminds me of when various religious groups wig out over movies that no one would have seen & turn them into hits

i feel that vintage fur, from eras when it was acceptable and common to wear fur such as the 1940's is acceptable. I have been give a few peieces from my grandmother that i would deffinatley consider wearing (if i thought they wouldn't get ruined by eggs or paint!)
But i would never ever go out and buy a fur coat made recently from fendi or other designers that are still known for using it!

I don't wear fur. I don't like the idea of wearing an animal on you.

the "Faux Fur" thread

I didn't find any forums on fur:sick: or faux fur, so I decided to make one.
it seems that most people don't wear it anymore, probably because of all the animals that have to be killed for it, but they seem to forget that the fake ones are almost just as good now

I'm so happy you made this thread. I've been wanting to a buy a shaggy faux fur. I love the 70's feel of it all.
