1920s : Fashions of a Roaring Decade

c. 1926. Court Dress regulations required women to wear feather plumes or carry feathers when being presented at court. Such large ostentatious fans might also have been seen at formal balls but not in crowded nightclubs. Feather evening bags were being advertised in 1924 as 'exceptionally smart'. They were also exceptionally expensive at 55 shillings.

c. 1926-1928. This dress is made from 'artificial silk', or rayon, a fabric which revolutionised the mass production of ready-to-wear women's dresses. Modern, lightweight and cheaper than real silk, rayon was the fabric of the future. It helped lay the foundation of modern high street fashion.

Great posts, as usual ^_^

The ensemble in post #56 is beautiful, wish I could give you karma.

Thanks, DV! I love this era, and there are so many anonymous designs to post! :woot:

c.1920s Sweet French military blue cotton floral day dress with matching fabric sash. The v-neckline dress falls straight to the hem front and back. On the sides below the natural waist are two pleated panels. The colors could be brighter is the only thing I can say.

c. 1920s Emerald green silk velvet with gold print. Scoop neckline and long narrow sleeves with snaps to close at the wrist. Vertical ruffle down left side of bodice. At the dropped waist is a gathered and draped band. At the base of the ruffle the waist band is ruched and accented with a green silk crepe puff. The skirt is wrapped and opened below the same point. The access fabric created by the ruching drapes at this opening and is accented with rows of matching ruffles.

c. 1920s. Very pretty navy silk chiffon dress with red and pale yellow mums. The deep v-neckline is accent with an ivory lace overlay. The long sleeves have a double cuff with an under-piece of solid silk chiffon. The solid color under cuff is splitting and should be removed. I don't like to change the original concept so am leaving that for the new owner to do or not. Around the drop waist is a 3-inch wide sash that is decorated with a rhinestone ornament. Running vertically down the front of the bodice is a vertical ruffle.

c. 1920s. Forest green silk chiffon dress with original slip. The bodice is simple and plain with only three pin-tuck darts at the shoulders. The sleeves are long and narrow and do continue some holes in the chiffon, I would remove the sleeves and make the dress sleeveless. The skirt is where all the detail is in this dress. There is an attached matching belt at the drop waist. The skirt itself is two layers; the bottom layer is a skirt of matching silk chiffon, the top portion is has three horizontally running pin-tucks.

1924 circa Aquamarine Art Deco Beaded Evening Gown
silk, beading

The convergence of Art Deco line, the modernist impulse to facilitate pure form, and Japonisme's potential to offer a vocabulary of untailored wrapping shapes was more than fortuitous. Chanel uses a French ombre textile with pattern sources from the Japanese kimono but brings to it the ethos of chaste minimalism. As Western fashion designers discovered from the East that untailored lengths of fabric could constitute modern dress, the cylinder and the textile plane became the new forms for apparel.

It's unclear whether this gown was a slightly longer 1922 style that was shortened around 1924 to accomodate the new, higher hem lengths, or whether the gathering was done originally and intentionally to give the appearance of the fashionable drop-waist.
