and we really see this was the end of the corset....

Silk lace/satin dress, c.1920

I love the the long, elegant styles of the early 1920s. Although this brief period is considered transitional from the more structured Edwardian look to the later flapper style, the early 1920s produced some of the most beautiful clothing of the 20th century.

The designer uses tape-like lace in the overdress to create intricate floral/abstract motifs of an almost mesmerizing beauty—a brilliant design achievement that commands our admiration (see the fourth picture down).

Walking room is added to the long, straight slip by deep pleats below the drop-waist. The slip closes on one side with snaps. The dress is basted to the slip at the hipline, creating a blouson effect. The lace skirt is partially open on one side, showing the slip underneath.

Beaded silk crepe flapper dress, c.1925

The dress is fashioned from glowing, burnt orange silk crepe. The beading pattern combines small cut-steel beads with matching bugle beads. The sleeves are cut-in-one with the bodice for a relaxed easy fit. The dress can be pulled in at the hipline with ties if desired.

Handmade lace/embroidered flapper dress, c.1925

Fashioned from white cotton organdy, the dress is embellished with fine hand-embroidered whitework. The front and back panels of embroidery are framed with bands of handmade filet lace. I love the wide scalloped hem border of filet lace.

I  this dress!
French beaded chiffon dress, c.1924

The dress consists of two separate pieces: a solid beige silk crepe underslip and a beaded chiffon overdress. The beading pattern combines coral, blue, and green glass beads. The sunflower motif, which has pride of place in the design, subtly draws attention to you.

The overdress has a gold lamé sash. The effortless style is comfortable and easy to wear. Both pieces close on the side with hooks and snaps. The dress has a small label that reads "Made in France."

Mixed lace flapper dress, c.1925

This lovely dress, from a wealthy Midwest estate, was obviously very expensive when new. It was probably purchased for a special occasion and worn only once. For the artful sophistication of this dress, we must credit the ingenious layered design as well as the aristocratic gold metallic embellishment.

The layered design is composed of fine needle-run lace and Point de Venise that appear to be handmade. On closer examination, you can see that the laces are superb machine copies of the real thing.

The lace layers are attached to a pink silk slip at the hipline. The design is embellished with bands of gold metallic lace. A gold lamé cummerbund and braided decoration accent the hipline. I love the graceful faux sleeves. The easy-to-wear flapper style slips over the head with a closure of hooks on the slip only.

The label reads "The Halle Brothers Company/Cleveland." Halle Brothers department store was one of Cleveland's finest retailers from its founding in 1891 through the 20th century. The store featured specialty boutiques where Cleveland's elite could purchase expensive dresses.

Provenance: The dress belonged to Virginia Irvin Kildow of Indiana.
