According to Rousseau: Our luxuries and goods bring us farther apart from each other because we become centered on what we have and how we can better live than that of others and our community as a whole. Thinking inwardly and only trying to develop yourself as successful in the private sphere (think Donald Trump), is placing your focus in the wrong place. We should think about trying to succeed in the public sphere because we can develop our real identities not from all this "stuff" but through our meaningful relationships with others and a strong sense of community.
Rousseau also believed that private property was the source of all inequality. For more reading on this topic consult "the discourses on the source of inequality"

In a way luxuries are bringing us farther apart because we develop a certain "style" and see ourselves as independent individuals, and become accustomed to the ways we ourselves do things. But on the other hand, we need to see ourselves as independent people; because nobody ever wants to be the same as anyone else. And through seeing ourselves only as individuals, it may give us a desire to learn about others, therefore bringing us closer together...
