Alexander Wang S/S 2024 New York

.
Even when this brand was over hyped by Fashion media in late 2000s , I knew it was sh!t even then. AW then was notorious for copying NG's designs that someone found boxes of Balenciaga shoes in his office, a brand which he ironically later designed for . In any case he was a one trick pony to begin with offering boring street clothes with a limited color palette. Ultimately this brand will be shuttered maybe not now but in a few years, his controversies have damaged the brand as well but even without them, his clothes still suck. They sucked in 2009 and they suck now. He has made his fortune and should go on to do other things.

I think a lot of the Wang success is similar to Jacquemus', he just knew how to make things that would go viral and resonate with youth (Remember the 'explicit content' shirts? Those were terrible). I was never a fan of his street clothes, but more of the elegant bits he offered. I guess I need to dig some NG for Balenciaga archives to free myself from ignorance. However, his Spring 2013 collection was very unique. I wish designers nowadays would create conceptual collections like that and execute them as well, whilst still being actually wearable.
Anyhoo, I think his Balenciaga was far more faithful to Cristobal's than Demna's will ever be.

I admit I haven't ever been on top of his case, just read a couple of articles. But I'm still curious. Why do you say it seems 'shady'? Is it because of the accusing parties or because of Wang, or both? Either way, if there were so many accusations, it's very probable there is some truth to it. I always try to think that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, yet sexual assault allegations are hard to prove. All I can hope for is that this is not a conspiracy to ruin the reputation of the formerly absolutely most successful Asian American designer. And I am very aware of all the rotten things the fashion industry can do, especially to independent fashion houses.
Mostly the weird flip-flopping of the stories from both sides, along with the eventual dismissal of the whole thing. Due to the large number of accusations, I was leaning towards believing the accusations, but the sudden dismissal of the case made me question the whole thing.

The clothes he made during the heyday of his success felt right for the time and what customers wanted to buy - Whether or not he just managed to remix the from other designers is a whole other story and also whether or not specific trends really make sense in the highest echelon of prices - Let's not forget a lot of the products Alexander Wang sold during his rise were much, much more affordable than Balmain, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga or Rick Owens, all of which I believe are designers most Alexander Wang customers would also have clothes from in their wardrobes.

With the exception of Rick Owens whose DRKSHDW collection was an absolute retail hit with it's limitation on piece-dyed jersey, sweatshirting and denim, Alexander Wang's T line was maybe the only provider of high-fashion 'casual wear' that was not trying to be *precious* - Clothes you could dump in the washing mashine and use without second guessing whether or not they survived. They probably still make a substantial amount of money with those kind of clothes and less with clothes you see in editorials.

How affordable do we think Alexander Wang is now?

It's clearly too expensive, not only for what it is but also where the brand stands at this present moment - That coming from the POV of a former retail buyer in Europe (prices may or may not be lower in the US or China) who is also looking with a bit of scepticism as to how the rise of prices for brands like DRKSHDW have evolved over the years - It's a bit easy to blame the inflation for that when you come from the size of business and quantities Rick Owens comes from as he surely could market DRKSHDW at a more accessible price point (as it used to be). DRKSHDW used to be such a successful line with a customer who would only occasionally be able to afford mainline but now that person will probably only buy from either one collection on Re-Sale platforms.

This is purely anecdotal, but...I came of age (in terms of clubs and going out at night) in a parallel but different group as Alex's circa 2009. His crew had some of the cattiest, bitchiest, nastiest people I have ever come across in my life. They were vicious and snobby, but clearly, like most people who act this way, it all stemmed from insecurity (latching onto male models and anyone they thought was attractive, while denigrating anyone who rejected them or who they decided wasn't cool enough). I can't speak to the specific allegations against him, but wow were they a bunch of c*nts. A very dark, weird group of people.
