All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

I suspect that most companies only respond to those applications that interest them. Occassionally you might get a "no, thank you" reply ... but don't expect it ... that's just how it is in business, not just fashion.

Just keep sending applications /resumes to everyone you can possibly find, continue to make your self look as impressive as possible by preparing yourself with activites and classes, make sure the application/resume is perfect on spelling and grammar and get's your point accross well but briefly ... then hope for the best. You are probably competing against a lot of other applicants ... so the more companies you apply to the better chance someone will think you are a good match for them.

romeoelliott .... as far as expanding your major ... it all depends on what you want to do. We have other threads for this .... this thread is about internships.

Here are a few that might lead you to find the information you want ... using education and career as keywords in my search (there are more, if you wish to search again):

To find more threads, do a search of thread titles ... using keywords that relate to what you want to do in fashion ... like design, designers, publishing, editor, stylist, marketing, buyer, buying, pattern maker, or any other area of fashion that interests you. You will find some of the educational requirements for each of those in most of those threads. Just be aware that our search engine must have 4 letter words or longer ... so it won't recognize "PR" but it will accept "public" or "relations'.

Business schools in England/France and internships?

Hi everyone,

I know this may not be 100% pertinent to this forum, but I would like to see your advice. I am currently living in Canada and attending a business school here. I am planning on going on exchange next year (2010-2011) overseas to either England or France to study abroad for one year.

I was hoping to hear some of your advice/opinions as I am hoping to attend a business school overseas while having a part-time internship. Although I am studying business, I do have an interest in fashion and would really like to have some sort of internship in the field while overseas (I do not have any sort of formal training in fashion, mostly interests and have helped out with one or two fashion shows previously).

Could you please provide me with some insights about this? Is my plan doable or would it be something that is very difficult to attain?

Thanks :flower:

Welcome to the Fashion Spot, royaltreasure!

This is the right forum ... but I am merging your new thread into the existing thread about internships and work experience.

I also searched and found this old thread for you ... there is a tiny bit of info in it about work placements in London:
Looking for part time relating to fashion in London.

And this thread ... which is about paid work, not internships ... but it might give you some insights about how they operate there:
Working in Paris

I think that things work very differently in each country ... there seem to be a variety of influences that affect who they hire and why.

I sent a follow up email. I hope they won't mind.

Has Spring Internships already started? Do they start from January? I thought they start from March?

Hi there, last week i applied for a position interning with the Times Style magazine. This is my first application for an internship with a publication and it has been a week since i sent off my CV, should i follow up today, leave it a little longer or not follow up at all? What is the usual protocol?

Thanks for your advice :)

Hi, I'm just curious, who did you contact at The Times Style? Was it via e-mail?

I just got an interview with a fashion stylist for an internship. And I wanted to know how I should dress for the interview? The application said casual and the job description is as follows: "An interest in fashion and styling. Must be articulate, polite, well dressed, well mannered, can think on your feet and multitask." He's seems to be very trendy and works for some pretty big designers. I feel like I should dress nice.

^i think for an interview with a fashion stylist, you definitely want to look stylish but not like fashion overkill either. work in a couple key trends or colours, but stay true to your personal style and most importantly look professional and polished overall--ie. clean hair, clean clothes/steamed if necessary, no excessive cleavage/sexiness etc.

maybe i'm a tad neurotic but usually i'll think about my outfit a few days in advance, try on a bunch of stuff and decide on 2 outfits to choose from (one for colder weather, one for warmer--the weather has been all over the place recently and i've found it helpful to have another option on hand just in case it's a hot sunny day in the middle of winter, and all of a sudden your cashmere turtleneck doesn't seem like a good idea anymore). or pick an outfit that is easy to add layers to/strip layers from.

lastly it may help inspire you to take a look at his personal style, or his portfolio by seeing how he likes to dress people. some stylists have a certain 'look' they just naturally gravitate towards. but just be yourself :) good luck!!!

^ I have interned overseas, but not with a programme. I just sent my resume and cover letter via email.

Did you need a Visa or were you already able to legally work in that country? If a Visa, how did the company react to having to sponser you?

I find the Human Resources at Diane Von Furstenberg extremely rude! I sent 3 emails to them and not one reply!

It depends which country - many countries (like the US) want you to be sponsored by a third party, like an agency, whilst others like Hong Kong, the company doesn't actually sponsor the visa, but you apply for the temp work visa (or whichever visa you're applying for) on your own, directly to the government.

hi. im new to the whole intership thing but i'm graduating community college and planning on attending a four year maybe in nyc or cali. can anyone tell me how i can get started in searching for an intership that involves styling or anything fashion related. i don't mind if it dosn't pay but if it did it would be a bonus. oh. i plan to stay in nyc this summer or even cali. where ever the internship is i'll movie to.

Here are some ideas about who to research and approach about thier intern programs:

Iinterning at any fashion magazine would be the optimal ... in th editorial dept. where you could peek at what the fashion editor was up to and maybe even work in the sample closet organizeing the designer samples. Of course ... that's extremely sought after sou the compatition is stiff.

Also , very stiff compatition would be the designer houses .... but they usually have interns on board.

Also for a PR firm who handles fasihion clients ... they work with the stylists and provide the samples to them and write press releases, work on fashin shows sometimes, etc.

Or an actual stylist ... although they don't really have a formal intern program .... but some will take on an intern sometimes.

You just have to do a lot of research and find contact information and ask if they either take interns of have a formal internship program and ask how to apply.

But even interning in fashion retail might work .... not so much on the sales floor, but maybe with the visual merchandising dept., if you are interested in styling.

First and foremost, check you college and see what their resources are ... they often have a list of possible companies that offer internships.

When I started getting interested in working in fashion, obviously I figured out I needed to do internships. And honestly, reading this thread was so much help as it answered all the questions I ever had about interning - where to find it, how to apply, what to do, etc. Oh and about how so few of the internships are actually paid!
