The interview didn't go too well! I'll divulge more details later, but for now I'm looking for a Plan B. Could someone please tell me what departments one could intern/ do work experience at in a magazine? I'm being ambitious and looking at the biggies like Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire etc.

I'm sorry to hear that ... but analyze what you might have done better and learn from it for the next interview.

Ooh thanks for all that! I just thought I'd let you all know that net-a-porter turned me down because the other candidate had much more experience- I've only been out of high school for a few weeks and the other one had graduated etc.
But it's not all bad news! They offered me a two-week work experience placement as a taster session, with the potential to be considered for a longer term placement in the future. So I am really really happy about that! If any of you have any questions about what they asked in the interview etc, I'd be happy to help! I think I know where I went wrong, so I'd like to help people avoid my mistakes... Also, for those of you who are wondering whether or not to apply to a really good company- I would say go for it! You have nothing to lose, and, for me- it worked out pretty well

i'm not adressing anyone in particular and i don't know want to injure anyone, but i was thinking - you are all very open here in this forum, mentioning all the names, all the particular places you worked/applied and how did it go. that's really nice, interesting and usefull, but do you think it's ok - i mean those people with whom you had interview today might be reading this posts - you think it's ok?

As long as they are not naming names of the people who interviewd them and they don't say anything slanderous ... I think it's fine.

However ... I think I understand what you mean. Many prospective employers do "Google" the names and the emails of applicants that they are considering ... and if they find something inappropriate on the web, it could cause them to hire someone else. (it's really the same for an internship as it would be for a job ...maybe not quite as extensive, but still they investigate).

But the most damaging things are usually Facebook and other social networks ... all those pictures when you are partying, etc. where you are tagged on other people's sites, especially and inappropriate language when tweeting and leaving comments.

Yeah that's right Cicciolina! I'm from the UK and not yet at university, yet I managed to get plenty of offers to intern in NY, even though they said "for college credit only". Of course, I couldn't get a visa- but that's another issue altogether!! But defo go for it

I"m not sure if this is a new post or not ... because of the testing and automated replacement thread system tech support has been working on (it might be a very old post).

But this is the new internships thread and this is where we will carry on the discussion. ... so I'll anwer your question, just in case.

"Any companies" is extremely broad deffinition. But you can check these threads first.

Review this thread, to see if anyone has posted anything in your city, if not you may post a request, but first you must name the company and department you are interested in (human resources or employment/hiring is most likely the departments that also handle internship programs in large companies I need Contact Info for Publicists / Designers / Showrooms / Magazines / Stores / etc

Then you really have to do the research yourself. For example, if you want to intern in an fashion magazine, you must research to find out if there are any fashion magazines headquartered in your city. If so, check their corporate web site to see if they advertise an internship program. If, if you can't find any, then call their human resources/employment/hiring department and just ask if the offer internships. Ask who to speak to about this ... and ask for information regarding applications and requirements to apply.

You might also consider any desginers or clothing manufacturers in your city. Maybe Fashion showrooms ... if you have a fashion district ... that's where they sell wholesale to boutique owners. And what about retail shops? If they are small and locally owned, you would just have to approach the owner and ask if they would consider you for a work experience internship.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but i'm always interested in reading about other peoples internship experiences and getting tips from them. Are there any blogs or articles that you guys can recommend?

Also, I've had no luck so far finding an internship. I live in Philadelphia and unfortunately going to NYC for a spring semester internship isn't an option. I've thought about doing virtual internships and would like to know if anyone has ever done one? What was it like?

I know it's a late response, but I also know there seems to be a lack of people from the UK on here, so I'll post for anyone else who may ask in future too.
When you're doing school work experience, you're better off just applying to somewhere like your local favourite stores. I did mine in Topshop. I come from a tiny town in the north of England and there are no fashion companies up there, even the local paper wouldn't take anyone on who wasn't studying at degree level, and even if I lived in London, let me tell you it is hard enough for anyone 18+ studying a related degree to get a placement. From my experience at 2 magazines and a model agency here in London, they are unable to take people on who are under 18 due to insurance complications, youre more of a liability basically if something goes wrong. I'm sure there's restrictions to working hours etc too so they're better off just taking someone on that they can get the best use out of.
So, while you're at school try your best to get a job somewhere like Topshop or a local fashion boutique or something to show your maturity, hard-working attitude and interest in fashion, and it will be much easier when you do turn 18 and start applying for these things as youll have at least had some 'work experience'. Trust me, some of the people managed to get up to the end of the second year on my degree course without ever having had a job. At all. No placements, no part-time stints, nothing. And at this point we had to do 4 week placements as part of our course, which are already hard enough to get.

Of course, if you are blessed with good contacts or an insane amount of wealth, I'm sure you could get a week here or there somewhere higher up than retail, but then why would you need to check this thread?

I interviewed yesterday for an internship, they told me they needed the intern ASAP so they were going to decide in less than 24 hours.
I thought I was going to get the job, but I didn't get any calls YET.
I obviously sent a thank you email to follow up, but no response either.

Should I call?

I'd give them a couple days even though they said they were making an immediate decsioon .... if they said they'd call you with the decision. If they just said "We'll let you know ..." without specifiying how, then I'd give it to early next week, because they might be sending a letter (of rejection ... unfortunately ... they usually call the person selected). Sometimes (hard to beieve) their first choice doesn't take it (maybe got a better position, maybe the hours don't work, etc.) so it takes them longer because they must move down the list to their next choice. Then they notify the rest of the applicants by mail or email ... or sometimes, not at all (which is very unprofessinal, but it happens all the time).

Thanks! It's so weird that I had the impression they liked me at the interview! and i'm so disappointed since it really was my dream job!
