Balenciaga F/W 07.08 Paris

It was definitely the main collection as I saw those cotton velvet jackets with tails and japanese character embroidery, as well as the jodhpurs and plastic-covered high heels (even in an all-black plastic cage, they still looked like they came out of a toy shop)... the thing is that it was Berlin fashion week by the time I came, so most of the shops already had a lot of winter goods delivered. That was around 3 weeks ago.

Unfortunately, I couldn't see any of the skarves or tweed jackets to be able to tell you ow well they were done. I personally found the majority of the collection to be very 'young' and 'contemporary' in it's feel, regardless how expensive and elaborate some pieces might have been in the making... there's a certain Bohemian/Independent/Rock attitude about these clothes that make them feel very now, but also very dated once the general interest shifts towards a different tendency. I thought Nicolas was doing better when he kept the references less obvious and the clothes more subtle... this is very particular in it's experession and doesn't leave too much space for individual styling or interpretation, other than maybe to wear it with jeans.

that seems way too low for balenciaga... specially for a runway blazer and normally balenciaga prices are very high..

^ the pink jacket from the show retails for 1295 euros..(I'm 100% sure about this) which is $1640..I think the other blazers are more expensive though

most of the blazers are between 2-3k. They are a bit more expensive in the Us than in europe so you cant always convert to get the price in US

I'm totally obsessed with this collection! There's been criticism that it wasn't coherent, but the mix of fabrics and cuts was perfection for me (maybe I'm just not a very coherent person...)

His price points are shocking, though. Fortunately, Barney's has a tendency to buy a whole lot of his stuff so markdowns/good deals do come by eventually.

I saw one of the blazers in the Elle Accessories magazine and I believe it was $2595...what was more shocking is that the scarf was $2995...:ninja:

I have seen these Balenciaga scarves referred to as cheche, which are scarves of the Tuareg people. However, they don't look like Tuareg scarves at all. I can't remember where I saw the reference--somewhere on line/or in a magazine.

If they are real ikat then that would be about right.

really? I didn't know that Ikat was that expensive to produce considering it was quite popular in south east Asia...I saw some of the Zara copies and they were just prints...cheap prints...and that really made me appreciate Ikat more.
but i"m not ready to spend that much on a scarf :ninja:

Ikat is popular but it's also time consuming and a long process, I think for something like that to be sold commercially it wouldn't be cheap at all. Real and well done ikats sell for the thousands.

just found the info

what makes it so expensive? what the process?

Ikat is a tie-dye method for creating images on textiles. With tie-dye shirts for example it's the bound area of fabric that resists dye (resist dyeing is the overarching method that includes batik methods). You tie it up, dye it, and the areas covered from the ties are left uncolored.

With ikat the yarns of the fabric are dyed before they are woven. So all the yarns are stretched across a frame and small bundles of three or four yarns are tied. The bundles are made wherever the orginal color of the yarns must remain. Keep in mind that this done so that when it is woven the dyed yearn creates an image or pattern. When this process is done with several colors and with both the warp (up and down) and weft (right to left) yarns it becomes extremely long and time consuming.

Here you can see all the tiny bundles tied up that will later create a similar looking motif once woven.

thank you for posting this, mutterlein, i really appreciate your insightful comments :flower:

i am highly doubting, however, that a house like Balenciaga is producing as artisanal, labour-intense pieces as that (anymore)... it's not particularly suited for a big house that is thinking quantities and diffusion... after all, to actually create such an intricate icat pattern would be a very time-consuming process that you are probably not undertaking just for the sake of producing a desirable, yet uncommercial accessory. they probably haven't made a lot of these skarves, that's for sure.

Gosh, I've been right-clicking and saving for the last 15 minutes now.. :D I'm very very much in love with this collection. Does anyone have some nice HQ backstage pictures? That would totally rock my world.

omg, $49 thousand!
