Casting Directors : Who Are They? What Do They Do? Etc...

Do we have any updates? I heard something recently that happened maybe 10 years ago of a top girl getting blacklisted by Piergiorgio because she refused to walk in a very very sheer dress for an unknown designer. She has bigger breasts and so her walking in a sheer dress was more sexual than e.g Vittoria wearing a sheer dress. After that he refused to cast her for any other jobs and her career dried up a bit.

Id love to hear more dirt on other casting directors, especially Piergiorgio :)
nice try Ashley

I'm trying to avoid posting on this topic because it's felt like some of the recent comments are starting to feel borderline vitriolic but just my 2 cents on the above...

It is wrong that models have to experience this bias, and even as one of the few who has enjoyed DM's casting (only really in recent years) I have to concede that their limited stable of main girls is quite lame.

However in Lineisy's case I'm not entirely surprised or even sympathetic as she's been working for nearly 10 years and got a big initial push from Ashley, who still is really the only one to break (interesting) new girls who often become the more important models longer term. She's had her Meisel moment and appeared in numerous editorials on top of her runway bookings. She's a gorgeous girl but she's never really stepped up to the plate and delivered anything beyond "I'm here and I'm pretty" and so I don't really see how she can be mad about not booking all the top tier shows all these years later. Even the more limited models who have had success longer term clearly offer something in terms of professionalism or likeability (Nobis) or have a distinct aura/coolness around them (Binx).

I'm just grateful that we're not living in the Russell Marsh era anymore. The whole racist and agist narrative that he pushed in the 2000s is part of the reason this industry was so wretched for so long; people were just willing to overlook it because the quality of fashion was superior to today.

However all in all I would like to see more variety in CDs. I suppose there will always be a top dog who takes the most or more important shows though :(.
I’m really sad Marsh doesnt work anymore, he is the only one who made stars (Daria, Gemma, Sasha, Lara etc)

There’s been a lot of talk about the over saturation of Sudanese models, but no one seems to want to call out the system. All these girls have to do is screenshot shots each other’s pay for comparison.

It's probably because they are all signed to Select Paris and can't 😆

I don’t really understand that over saturation tbh. Yes there could be more representation of others archetypes of African models but they are an archetype like another.

i just looked at their roster..

u arent joking..

thats kinda crazy? there is not a ton of diversity in how these girls are being presented, its so odd to me

i feel like the lanes which black models can go in is much more narrow today than it was in like 2002..

It made me reflect on the early 2010s when the range of beauty for black models had range. Chanel Iman, Sessille Lopez, Ajak Deng, Jourdan Dunn, Rose Cordero, Lais Roberto, and Mia Amainata Niaria were all working around the same time and their looks ran the gamut of black representation.

These Sudanese models are being used and discarded before they even get a chance to pop seriously. Anok & Adut (Now Awar) are the only 2 that get really consistent work to make money. The other girls just keep getting replaced.

It's really sad that this industry markets itself with buzz words like 'progressive' and 'inclusive' when they are from from it, specifically when it comes to minorities. They think Black = Dark skinned Sudanese and nothing else. You are right about the range of representation in the past, not that it was anything astounding but it definitely felt more progressive than now... but this is what you get when you allow only PG to be the deciding factor in the girls' careers, more of the same.

There are black girls who are not from South Sudan walking, but they all have that same look. Dark skin, cropped natural hair.
Though there are some that don't fit that look. Elodie Guipaud just had a great season. Marylore Heck, Luna Yohannan are both new on the scene and ofc Annemary and Sacha. But yeah, most of the black girls walking all have the same look.

I am just happy Awar was able to stand out amongst the rest.
It's very interesting ( in a not good way ) that the 3 South Sudanese girls who have longevity all come from ( or have immigrated to ) 1st World countries. Anok USA, Awar Canada, Adut Australia. It's none of the girls who came straight out of South Sudan.

Ashley Brokaw supposedly lives a couple towns over from me. Maybe I can run into her at a coffeeshop and strike up a conversation haha.
