Deconstruction by Alexander McQueen

I saw everything... i love that video on youtube.com .. it looks so amazing ... watch it !!!!!

You know, Scott and Softie, I think one would have to be seriously disturbed NOT to be disturbed living in this political and social madness of today's reality...

I see McQueen's work as coming from purity of vision and immense passion. I suspect his "cynicism" or irony is a result of his pure--and very sane-- soul yearning for truth, beauty and freedom and not finding it in today's society. Like Scott says, his work comes from emotion, and I think one can see that in his work, unlike those who just wh*re for effect.

I don't think an artist needs to suffer to create great art. But it's often the price of the passion and the clear vision of truth necessary to create beauty. As opposed to living in blissful, often stagnant, ignorance.

I love it, thanks for this thread.

Ok, you've said it twice, now you have to explain why.

I'd also like to hear why people are wowing, because, frankly to say "i love it" and leave it at that is at least boring. Let's hear some discussion, because it warrants some.

I was impressed too, and I will share what I think this was later on today.

For now, I wonder if he is familiar with this work by Duchamp...

i've always been fascinated by the way he presents his clothes and his projects alongside, i think this is really where fashion becomes art... there is such an agression underlying all his concepts and i can very much relate to that, it's as if he threw all ideas of beauty and decay into a shredder and there's something so touching coming out of it. actually i am always reminded of a fin de siècle kind of aesthetic...

one of my favourite projects of his (together with nick knight) is 'angel',
you can view it at showstudio.com:

end of the century- end of the world...
it's a common theme amongst those of our generation...mcqueens and mine
it's a recurring theme in my work as well...

i do not question where this comes from...
i only observe that he is somewhat disturbed...
and i do not say whether that is a good thing or a bad thing...
perhaps it is only inevitable...

THIS is where fashion meets art---in my opinion..
cause none of this is done for commercial purposes...
this is something else...
this is using fashion as a means to create your vision or your art...
to say something...to make a statement...

THIS i understand...^_^

Anyway, here is a substantive answer as to why I think this was a beautiful, and meaningful clip. Basically, I think Lee was (literally?) trying to put a man in woman's shoes. He took the history of wedding with all the incredible injustices, such as forced marriage, that women have suffered, and still suffer in many parts of the world, and made a man experience it. The tears of blood that the bride cries because she is powerless against the forces such as her parents, that give her in return for social status or material wealth. The gag in the mouth, because she is not allowed to voice her opinion. The face painted, perhaps because she is not allowed to express her emotions in mimicry. The tall shoes, so her feet suffer while she is subjected to the standards of beauty that someone else has thought up. The exposed breasts, because the groom can't wait to have her, and already imagines her sexually. Something along those lines. That's why Lee is disturbed.

I think "morfing" a man into a woman, or a woman into a man is always a fascinating issue to deal with. It's about questioning gender, feminity, masculinity, society... anything:-) I remember a video by Kozyra, when she wore a fake penis, beard and entered a men only bathhouse. She filmed all this using a candid camera.

I do think what McQueen made and filmed is just a nice thing to watch and all:-)

I think that has to do with being sexually exposed. Just my take.
i was thinking along the lines too
maybe what he did has no message at all

maybe the story is about a man missing his dead fiance to the extreme where he cuts up his own clothes and merge his fiance's cloak into a wedding dress and walk down the aisle for her as well as for him self

the bricks as shoes are obvious

You don't have to like McQueen but I think he deserves respect. He doesn't chuck out crap every season so people like Paris Hilton can get excited.
Vey well put..McQueen's work is always well thought out.

1. we know that
Yes, Stavross why don't you give an opinion of what you think?

I said earlier that I wanted to steal this man's creativity, that's just because it's the first time I've seen a designer deconstruct an outfit and make it a presentation. I don't care if the idea was thought of in advance, I just know that I'd never come up as something as great as this, so I wouldn't say it's rubbish. Ghost I'm still waiting for your response...

My own interpretation: This person is suffering from sexual identity crisis, it could be a man having the pleasure to dress like a woman or a woman who's forced to get into her wedding dress just for this one occasion. The white painting portrays how neutral this person is, how they can't seem to find their real identity.

^ that's a great analysis la bordelique. either way, i think it's about sexuality and mcqueen utilizes it superbly. i also think it can be safe to assume that it's a highly personal issue.
