Discussion: Who Should Be The Creative Director of Gucci?

The likelihood of hiring Maria Grazia is very low though, no? Her non-compete would end in July 2026 (at the earliest), meaning her first collection would be shown In September 2026 for Spring Summer 2027! I highly doubt Gucci is willing to wait until then to have an Artistic Director?

It will be someone who is available now who can debut in September this year.

If MGC goes to Gucci, it's really gonna be a sexless fashion landscape out there with JWA going to Dior, MB at Chanel, SB at Givenchy, I'm tired of of the sterility! Give me something that get's the blood racing and heart pumping, and I don't mean in a frustrated "this is the 20th PP clone collection of the season" sentiment.

Under Michele, Gucci has become known it's utopian gender-fluid maximalism, reviving itself from the bourgeoise of Giannini and seducing a younger, diverse customer, but in recent years, sales seem to be slowing down as Michele was unable to reinvent himself to suit the shift Zeitgeist. In light of the announcement of Alessandro Michele's departure from Gucci, let's discuss who do you think should replace him.

Personally, I'd prefer someone who can keep that gender-fluidity, but wrap it in a more chic, grown-up package. Here are my ideas:

Bruno Sialelli
He has a similar aesthetic to Michele, but it's more refined and put together, something that Gucci really needs right now. His menswear needs work though.

Haider Ackermann
He's like Sialelli, but he knows how to dress grownups and has S-tier technical skills. His approach to gender-fluidity seems more sophisticated and approachable too (not overly masculine on women, not overly feminine on men). Also his links to Timothée seem to be more than Harry at the moment. That said, I'd rather have him relaunch à la Theyskens.

Riccardo Tisci
Tisci could do wonders for a house like Gucci with his background in both streetwear and couture. His more traditionally masculine approach to menswear could bring back the male clientele, who were alienated by Michele. However, I'm wary of how he'll approach the Gucci stripes (the Burberry check traumatised me).

Alessandro dell'Acqua
I consider Nº21 to be the best example of a independent modern-day fashion label and he did wonders at third-generation Rochas, so I believe he could do that on a larger scale. His menswear is meh though...

Charaf Tajer
While he claims to want of becomes the "Hermès/Louis Vuitton of his generation", Gucci could take advantage of the potential of having their own (probably more sincere) version of Virgil's Louis Vuitton if done right. Like Tisci, he can re-attract those male customers.

For some strange reason....I'm feeling that John Galliano might be a wise choice for Gucci as their new creative director. He definitely understands Gucci's sexy/provocative esthetic....he also understands classics and basics...and he understands luxury such as Haute Couture. His work over at Margiela was a bit too polished and clean to represent Margiela's raw/non commercial/non glamour esthetic. He definitely understands gender fluidity...etc etc. Gucci is a HUGE, instantly recognizable household luxury brand. Gucci needs a creative director that can represent the gravity/status that Gucci represents. It would be unwise for Kering to hire a non descript/almost anonymous fashion designer. Gucci needs a creative director with talent....reputation....clout....recognition....and understands our current times. He understands youth culture....and the older generations.

For some strange reason....I'm feeling that John Galliano might be a wise choice for Gucci as their new creative director. He definitely understands Gucci's sexy/provocative esthetic....he also understands classics and basics...and he understands luxury such as Haute Couture. His work over at Margiela was a bit too polished and clean to represent Margiela's raw/non commercial/non glamour esthetic. He definitely understands gender fluidity...etc etc. Gucci is a HUGE, instantly recognizable household luxury brand. Gucci needs a creative director that can represent the gravity/status that Gucci represents. It would be unwise for Kering to hire a non descript/almost anonymous fashion designer. Gucci needs a creative director with talent....reputation....clout....recognition....and understands our current times. He understands youth culture....and the older generations.

gucci is flopping bc they forgot they’re supposed to be super glam. Michele gucci worked because it was very glamorous and fit the gucci image of very visible clothing. The visibility is what gives value.

Nobody asked for Lo Fi Gucci. My friend who is a Gucci longtime customer only liked the most glam pieces such as the sequin skirt suit, and Crystal-GG velvet legging bodysuit…

Im not sure if Hedi is right for that.

I adore John so much but he's not that types of Designer who are suitable for Gucci. And from my observes, Gucci is the star designer maker, not the other way around. That being said, I would rather see a fresh face ( yes another "SBS's type" is welcome ). I never get what is called "Gucci's DNA" or "Gucci codes", when people talk about some b.s like that, I'm sure they are referencing to Ford's Gucci. That's the point, the most successful designer in that brand's history will be will automatically be considered the brand's originator, the great old one. TF the man had cursed Gucci since the day he left.

If he was so after that I don’t think he would’ve accepted the Celine job—I guess it’s more about world building for him. Putting it that way though is funny, so much for his pretense of being a couturier. Gucci is inherently a luggage house after all.

Situation is dire if they need the Hedi injection, but with what happened at YSL, and much so that his former boss is now Kering overlord, it’s unlikely.

I’d be happy if we’re searching for a designer, but we’re just searching for who can sell, and it’s only a few with the record to do so.

John wouldn’t tolerate / survive the pressure and any type of criticism. The only reason it worked in Margiela was because he was given total freedom which wouldn’t be the case in Gucci and he would be out after 2 minutes
