Discussion: Who Should Be The Creative Director of Gucci?

John wouldn’t tolerate / survive the pressure and any type of criticism. The only reason it worked in Margiela was because he was given total freedom which wouldn’t be the case in Gucci and he would be out after 2 minutes
I think John Galliano would definitely be able to handle the pressure and criticism. He made it through all that anti Semitic drama a few years back and landed back on his feet. But I do agree with you.....if he doesn't have complete control of the brand....it wouldn't settle very well with him. I'll say this about Galliano. He's probably one of the best....and one of the most accomplished fashion designers on the planet. His talent and his imagination has no boundaries... but.....but....John is also known to be a huge egomaniac....and he can be viciously opinionated. To be blunt...Galliano can be a royal b*tch. Same can be said about Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld. Galliano wouldn't want anyone else's hands involved in his work.

That's it. He wouldn't allow anyone near his work. i guess that is why he was given absolute freedom at margiela, thankfully. But i think its a given that him and someone like cantino in a place like gucci ( WAY larger than MM) would clash

I mean, a 2002 Galliano might work, but that’s never gonna happen. Galliano has been dry of ideas since 2008. I doubt he can reinvent himself at this point and he probably doesn’t need to.

Also, working at Kering after Dior and Margiela (he had lot of freedom) would be his biggest nightmare I think.

I still think it’s going to be Hedi. If they pick an unknown or Dario or somebody like that it will flop even more. Hedi can create a Gucci core and make it expensive and desirable. He’s really the only one who can do so at the moment.

@FashionFanatico Some people are really acting like the future of the industry rests on whoever is going to head Gucci, but like it's... "just" Gucci.

Also, because I've been posting and scanning archive magazines lately... there are so many fashion brands and houses that have fallen to the wayside. Maybe it's Gucci's turn.

It’s more of what it will do to Kering. If those brands fall into the wrong hands…

Okay, you make it sound like these brands are the equivalent of nuclear codes or something else that can "fall into the wrong hands." If a brand can't sustain itself, why does it deserve to be around? Some brands have their time and need to be shuttered, eventually. Not saying that's what's going to happen to Gucci, but like.. again, it's GUCCI. I'm not losing sleep over the future of a fashion house (just the future of fashion magazines).

In truth, I couldn't care less about Gucci. I'm more worried about Saint Laurent fading away if Kering collapses.

It’s that. As much as brands are just brands, it’s heritage. We could talk about the value of keeping the name of a dead person on the door, but surely, names like Saint Laurent, all its myths and spirit shouldn’t just die.

If fashion is so frivolous and just about garments there’s nothing to talk about.

I’m of the opinion that Saint Laurent is underutilized and undervalued. It could be much bigger.

That's entirely due to failures of the shareholders, and FHP managment.
Also YSL and Gucci both need 2 Creative Directors, one for womenswear and one for menswear, so if one crashes the other might redeem the brand creatively. Only a couple of people can do both (Tom Ford and idk).
So this thread about "who should be the creative director", singular, makes no sense to me.

EDIT: makes no sense to me, because I'd love TFSers proposing 2 names...
