Do you live in fashion Siberia?

I sometimes think it's better to be in fashion siberia......that way, those who are into fashion like you guys can stand out better.
Living in London/Hong Kong can sometimes feel like drowning in a sea of fashionistas.

yeah LSA over here too...east quad is considered the 'stylish' dorm since there's a lotta emo/hipster type kids here so I guess they put a little more thought into their outfits...I think Ann Arbor isn't too outstanding for style watching overall, either people are following trends without much injection of personality into their outfits, or they just don't care.

I'm slowly converting people around me to Yohji Yamamoto, Hedi Slimane, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. :P

edit: my ultimate goal is to "inject dressed-up luxury into college style and thereby influence a new generation of guys to consider more than just a pair of baggy jeans a reflection of their youthful vitality" yeah i'm reading too much GQ/Esquire/Details.

If so, where do you get the motivation to dress nicely if few appreciate it and some may even criticise

I get the motivation, because i have a crush on a girl and want to make her notice me...

i get criticised a lot, because i'm the only person who wears skinny jeans in my school... and that is not a good thing when everyone else are wearing evisu jeans and so on... They say that i dress way too androgynous :huh:

i agree even though i live nowhere near the capital...

it would be great to feel asthough i stand out but i just blend into the crowd

I feel all of your pain! I live in a fashion wasteland AKA Louisville, KY. I mean, I really didn't think it was going to be this bad. Transplanted from Chicago to Kentucky two years ago. Lucky for me, I have to travel to my job in Chicago (I telecommute most of the time).

That being said, the one GREAT advantage of living in Kentucky is that I don't ever have to pay sales tax. So I usually shop in Chicago and have all my purchases sent to Louisvile (most of the time the shipping is either free or negligible compared to the sales tax).

I'll say yes, even though it's one of the best places in the midwest. To give you some perspective:

-Yes, we do have lots of fake LV. BUT, we also have fake COACH bags! Obvious ones, with Gs instead of Cs.
-I've only seen ONE Balenciaga bag! I was in shock for the rest of the day!
-I saw a girl carrying this purse (attached pic from eBay) and I seriously couldn't believe it. I kept starring, wondering if my eyes were playing tricks on me.

The majority of people seem to fall into two camps: The not fashionable - those still stuck in their clothes from 1995 - Big pull-over hoodie with something emblazoned on it - think "Old Navy" or "Minnesota", with flare light-wash jeans and big white sneakers. Oh, and some still perm their hair. And wear letter jackets, even though they're in college. Then there's the "fashionable" - any awful trend they'll latch onto - knit bag with big sequins? check; too-small shrug? check. They seem to regard Jessica Simpson as their fashion goddess. Take my "fashionable" friend - All of her clothes are too small for her, she wanted the Dooney & Bourke LV multicolor rip-off, but settled for some cheesy one from Target, and just a month ago bought a kukui nut necklace. And she thinks she's very fashionable.
Now I'm not saying I'm Miss Fashionista - I prefer to just have my personal style and leave it at that - and there are a few people who actually dress well. It can be kind of nice living in a non-fashionable place, in that you can still wear something that would be considered out dated in NYC or other locales, and no one would know.

Ok so i think liverpool is ok fashion wise, once you get rid of the paris wannabes.
I mean you can see loads of fashionable people about. But were I live, a merseyside suberb, the trends catch on a little slower.
Ok so there are set distinctive types of "fashionatas" there are the paris wannabe, there are the we're are wearing trendy clothes but my friends and i will all wear the exsact same outfit just in varying colours group, there are the illl wear head to toe designer stuff in an atempt to loook good group , and then there are the generally fashionable people, who know whats they are talking about and follow catwlaks etc.
Labels are a big things here, people take there designers seriously.
The citys look is a cross between paris and fellow socilites and footballers wives.

i hate my fashion siberia, with a passion, i cant wait for the entire town to explode or just to move out, quickly.

some might think there's room for creativity, which i agree, but there's no inspiration at all when living in the middle of nowhere, people are only concerned about looking good, good meaning your butt trapped in tight clothes, push-up bra, belly out. it's incredibly tacky and sickening, fashion equals versace, armani, d&g, abercrombie..even von dutch and if you dont wear them it's because you're poor, and if you're poor, then you're not very welcome.
then again, if you go to the 'freak' circles and you dress differently (no black uniform, no trendy haircut) they do think you might have an interest in fashion, if you have an interest in fashion then it means you're a ruthlessly shallow human being. hilarious. :D

I can completely relate to everything you say except here looking good is in the form of hideous mass market shops....no labels except silly knock-off LV bags. Also, here, both towns nearby are college towns so there's still this epidemic of conservative eco-hippie's(à la Lands End)....complete with those atrocious Birkenstock clogs. But it's so bad even thrift shops are no fun to scour.

I am now living in the place where almost all of people do not care about their clothes but only a few people such as those who come from Chicago and some international students dress well. The way of keeping my motivation is looking at the forum at the fashion spot and watching out the few exceptions who dress up nicely. Also, checking designer’s collections on the web and talking with my friends about fashion help keep my motivation to fashion.

Oh man. I live in the EPITOME of suburbia, and the small teenage population here relies on American Eagle for all their fashion. and the only things they pick up there are jeans that ride so low you can see their crack and shirts that are so tight they are corset-like with lame *** irono messages on them.

hang me now.

I love love love when we go into Dallas esp. Deep Ellum because it's REALLY refreshing to see people who actually try to dress their. Even if most are trendoids.

I grew up in a suburb of Chicago where there was a somewhat eclectic mix of those who were either extremely knowledgable or flat out ignorant about fashion. Once I was having lunch with a childhood friend who fell into the latter group. The conversation turned to clothing, and she said one of her favorite designers was Eddie Bauer (she thought they had a runway shoe and everything like Prada, Chloe, etc.)... I thought about correcting her, but didn't want to hurt her feelings, so I just let her run with the topic.

As of right now..yea..this city ...ew..lol. But there's a handful of people who dress really nicely.
I'm originally from a LA so yea..I guess it does feel nice to not to be amongst a whole population of fashion forward folks..

Well, hello to y'all.....I actually do live in Siberia, literally. And the fashion here is: wind breakers, camo, over sized sweaters and ill fitting jeans. The young folk go for Ugg type boots, heavy tights, puffy coats and boho accessories. My closet would be incomprehensible to most. Because of the climate I tend to prefer the ski pants as well (over my designer jeans, lol!).

Helena, where do you live?

I'm in the middle of a fashion desert. Around here Next and River Island are considered aspirational dressing. The only shops that are packed with customers are Primark and Select. There are little clusters of (fake) logo ridden chavs all over the place and I've been sneered at because I live in my Rick Owens leather jacket instead of wearing a cropped (just below boob level,) padded baby pink or pastel blue, fake fur trimmed, hooded nylon anorak!

Inspiration comes from wanting to dress how I want and not giving a flying fart about other people's opinion of me.

Oh I live in absolute fashion Siberia. I hate it. I still dress in clothing that I find beautiful and always try to do my best, because I do it mainly for myself.

but the comments I get.... "You must spend a lot of money on clothes" "How do you walk in those shoes?" "You are always wearing something new" "YOU are smart today!". "I don't know anyone else who has so many bags".

People here not only don't care about fashion, they apparently just cannot stand it if anyone else does.Where I come from,my wardrobe is unremarkable, and when people comment on it,I get compliments.

The standard uniform for a woman on the streets of this city would be jeans (still flared) or trousers, always just a tad too short, flat shoes (loafers, extremely pointy shoes or flat boots, but I don't mean this season's nice ones.I mean SENSIBLE shoes),a non descript top and the hair hacked off.

Actually, the young girls have beautiful long hair, but the moment women turn 25 or find a man, whichever comes first, off goes the hair.

I hate this.I love being around girlie girls;I find it fun and inspiring.

My friends in Cape Town and London are all very fashionable and I'm surprised that so many people mention jealousy/competition,because there's none of that.

I suppose we are all secure enough in our own individual style, just to be able to appreciate and delight in the style of the others.

This topic obviously pushes my buttons:lol: .

And oh the stores in this city...I visit 3 boutiques and, very occasionally, one department store.Furthermore,I shop online.Shoes are always online...occasionally from ONE shoe store worth walking into.

Every single girl in the streets here is clad by Zara,Mango,H&M,Vero Moda,Only and a few other suspects, none of which are distinguishable from one another.

But anyway it is not the brands that are important.

When I lived in Cape Town and London I was studying; I never bought designer clothes and I still always felt happy about what was available and I always got compliments. There were loads of other girls,non-designer clad, who contributed to a vibrant street image. Here?

I was talking to the owner of the ONE shoe store worth walking into and asking why she had stocked certain Marc by Marc boots and not others. Her reply?

"I can only sell sober, black or brown shoes here in Rotterdam.I have tried to branch out,but the stock remains on the shelves.Sometimes at trade fairs I see exquisite things, but I know that I won't be able to sell them. They want black or brown sensible shoes, even when they go out."

The lady says it all...

Yes, I do live there. Here are some fashion-conscious people but you'll never see a high fashion in the streets. Ever. I don't think I have ever seen a real Louis Vuitton bag here. Sad.

Yup... I definitely live in fashion Siberia... that's why I LOVE this forum.

The idea of fashion around here is wearing your Teva sandals with dark socks and shorts.

There isn't even fakes around here. It's just :yuk: when it comes to clothing and accessories in my area.

Actually, one of my classmates is an exchange student from Siberia...and I saw pictures of her friends and her in Siberia...and they were pretty stylish. Lots of color, vibrant patterns, and EXCELLENT hair. Truly unique...such a pity that my classmate has to wear collared shirts and khakis to adhere to the school dress code :-P.

The city my school is in: Atlanta-isn't really a Fashion Siberia but the school I go to is. A small women's HBCU where they believe fashion is following the latest trends. There's only one other girl I've met who has an interest in fashion as big as mine and people are always staring at us and commenting on what we wear. If I see another Rocawear tracksuit or pair of Ugg boots I'm going to scream. Oh and don't get started on the Abercrombie/Gap/American Eagle wear. Tsk tsk
