Early Oscar Buzz (2007)

The National Board of Review normally does a pretty good job of predicting eventual Oscar Best Picture nominees. Obviously some of the voters won't have seen all the contenders yet so there's still time for late entries to the race. Sadly a lot of the films on their list won't hit UK cinemas until January so I've got some waiting to do for a few of them.

This week a lot of the various US critics' organisations (Boston, LA, NY, Washington) announce their Films of the Year. Also the Golden Globe noms come out on Thursday.

Why has no one mentioned Amy Adams?! She's getting a lot of buzz for Enchanted, and I think she deserves it .

^^Amy's actually getting a lot of buzz for her role, especially since Enchanted did wonders at the box office and received rave reviews :magic: I do hope she's recognized somehow!

I read in Entertainment Weekly that Keri Russell is getting Oscar Buzz for Waitress.
:woot: I sure hope so! She was fantastic in the role and has a natural charisma I love. :crush:

^um...............It's a disney film. That should say something.

Should it? Disney has a truckful of oscars and awards under its belt. They pioneered the art of modern animation and have some wonderful wonderful films. What on earth does being 'Disney' have to do with it, really?

^Disney may be reowned for animated films, but you're discussing the actress category. If Adams is contending for the best-actress category, I doubt she stands a chance. Her film was about a princess in a modern-day world. It's not going to fight off the more serious heavy-weights.

Julie Andrews won best actress for Mary Poppins in 1964 though...so it wouldn't be the first time...

I am probably most excited to see No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood right now, even more so after these critics' awards. Neither are in cinemas in UK until January. :(

Luckily I have myself a DVD of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to watch as that seems to have a lot of buzz behind it.

Also quite excited at the prospect of Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead possibly picking up an Oscar nom. :woot:

I don't quite understand this list. Whose Top 10 has 11 entries? And why is There Will Be Blood at #11 when it's tied for Best Picture?

Aren't there 10 entries because it's a tie it lists 11? I have no idea it's a bit weird.

I've seen No Country for Old Men, and I can't imagine any other film this year being better, it was truly one the the best movies I've ever seen. I really love Bardem in it, but I wish Josh Brolin would get some props too, he's also fantastic. And if Cate Blanchett doesn't win, I will be amazed. That woman's going to win 20 Oscars before she's through:smile:

And I told you the critics would be busy this week. The highest-profile group weighed in yesterday:

The Coens seem to be winning. They could take home one of the big prizes this time - Best Director/Picture at the Oscars.

And who is Amy Ryan? I don't remember seeing anything with her in before.

^ I don't know. She's fairly regular on Law and Order, though. No major picutures under her belt.

To be honest the only truly great film I saw this year was No Country for Old Men. I'd never heard of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly before this thread, but I'll check it out. I also wasn't going to see There Will Be Blood, but maybe I should reconsider...

Cate's going to nail it for Best Actress but I kind of wish she wouldn't because it's so predictable. But against Keira and Julie I have to give it to Cate.
