Early Oscar Buzz (2007)

I've never seen Law and Order. I do know that her movie Gone Baby Gone had its release in the UK postponed because of the Madeleine McCann disappearance. I'm not actually sure when it will get here.

Amy Ryan's performance in Gone Baby Gone was beyond belief. She definitely outshone all of the other actors -- even Morgan Freeman, I dare say!

Ready for another blast of critics awards? They're unstoppable this week.

San Francisco Film Critics Circle:

he San Francisco Film Critics Circle has named "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" as the Best Picture of 2007. Andrew Dominik's Western, based on the Ron Hansen novel, details the complex psychology of Robert Ford and his relationship to the infamous outlaw Jesse James. For his performance as Ford, Casey Affleck was named Best Supporting Actor.

Veteran filmmaking team Joel and Ethan Coen took Best Director honors for helming "No Country for Old Men," an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's existential crime drama.

The San Francisco Film Critics Circle (SFFCC), which includes twenty-four Bay Area film critics, honored George Clooney as Best Actor for the titular role of a troubled lawyer in "Michael Clayton." Julie Christie won Best Actress for playing Fiona Anderson, who bravely faces Alzheimer's disease in "Away from Her."

In addition to Affleck's Best Supporting Actor nod, Amy Ryan secured Best Supporting Actress for playing Helene McCready, mother to a missing girl in "Gone Baby Gone."

Best Original Screenplay honors went to Tamara Jenkins' "The Savages," a seriocomic look at two siblings dealing with the physical and mental breakdown of their father, while Best Adapted Screenplay was awarded to Sarah Polley for turning Alice Munro's short story "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" into the film "Away from Her."

The San Francisco critics picked "No End in Sight" as the year's Best Documentary; Charles Ferguson's film explicates America's controversial entry into and occupation of Iraq. Best Foreign Language Film went to Julian Schnabel's "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" ("Le scaphandre et le papillon"), a French-language adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby's autobiographical book about life trapped inside a paralyzed body.

The SFFCC issued a Special Citation to recognize the under-looked independent film "Colma: The Musical," a homegrown song-and-dance extravaganza about the paradoxical drudgery and surreality of life in a city where the dead outnumber the living one thousand to one.

Lastly, the group presented its Marlon Riggs Award, honoring a Bay Area filmmaker or individual who represents courage and innovation in the world of cinema, to filmmaker Lynn Hershman-Leeson. Hershman-Leeson's films include "Conceiving Ada," "Teknolust," and this year's "Strange Culture," the true story of a Bay Area artist's Kafkaesque experience as a suspected terrorist in the era of the Patriot Act.

Casey Affleck really deserves the Oscar for best supporting actor he was absolutely fantastic!
I've read Reservation Road is getting masses of Oscar buzz for best picture, best director and actor, but the reviews seem mediocre?

Goerge Clooney isn't really that good of an actor imo.

George has that old-fashioned movie star quality though. It means he tends to come across as playing variations on the same character but it doesn't mean he's not made some good movies: Out of Sight, Syriana, Ocean's 11. Just don't mention Batman & Robin. :ninja: I'll see Michael Clayton pretty soon I think.

All these lists mean it's becoming easier to narrow down the Best Picture noms. No Country For Old Men is a lock. The BFCA have shown the first bit of love for Atonement. Perhaps this will do very well at the BAFTAs but get shut out Stateside?

Atonement is the dark horse for the Best Picture category.....

Johnny Depp should get an Oscar (as in way before) but i don't think it'll come from Sweeney Todd.

Best Motion Picture Drama
American Gangster
Eastern Promises
The Great Debaters
Michael Clayton
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood

American Gangster? It was enjoyable but deeply flawed. Eastern Promises was also flawed but had moments of genius. Can't wait to see No Country or There Will Be Blood.

Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy
Across The Universe
Charlie Wilson's War
Hairspray
Juno
Sweeney Todd

Didn't Across The Universe bomb? I'm kinda surprised it's here but I've not seen it so maybe it's amazing.

Best Actress Musical/Comedy
Amy Adams – Enchanted
Nikki Blonsky – Hairspray
Helena Bonham Carter – Sweeney Todd
Marion Cotillard – La Vie En Rose
Ellen Page – Juno

Is Cotillard now favorite for the Oscar, with maybe Ellen Page a dark horse?

Best Foreign Film
4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days (Romania)
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly (France, United States)
The Kite Runner (United States)
Lust, Caution (Taiwan)
Persepolis (France)

This list probably proves why the Globes have this right and the Academy has it wrong. Best Foreign Film as opposed to Best Film in a Foreign Language means all the top contenders don't end up being disqualified by ridiculous eligibility rules.

So Atonement's done a bit better here than on the critics' lists and Jesse James isn't getting much love apart from Affleck's performance.

i think it's an extremely weak year in terms of leading women...
there were some promising roles out there (reese witherspoon in rendition, naomi watts in eastern promises, jennifer connelly in reservation road) but the movies were poorly received by critics...

i actually think cate blanchett is the front runner for best actress, with cotillard running a close second...

across the universe and juno are there because of the immense buzz surrounding them...
i can't pick up a newspaper or magazine without reading about diablo cody and juno...

there are really no surprises here except i thought i'd see casey affleck for gone baby gone and not the assassination of jesse james...

edie falco for the sopranos?
did they forget that it ended?

^No. I don't think Elizabeth was well received. I think the woman in "Away from Her" may win.

I'm predicting very weak fashion at the awards this year.

So happy Keira got nominated...she needs to win!

^No. I don't think Elizabeth was well received. I think the woman in "Away from Her" may win.

I'm predicting very weak fashion at the awards this year.

Julie Christie- hellz yes! The woman is magic... I mean, she's Al Pacino's favorite actress.

Overall, I was actually somewhat suprised by the movie nominations- the TV ones are almost always predictable.

This maybe the first year in which the Oscar and GG nominations will seriously differ. Serious lack of Into the Wild, which I still think will do well at the Oscars, and the Acadamy nominated Keira Knightley before, who will probably garner an actress nom this year.
