GAP - what are your opinions??

But what else do children make? toys? what about "blood diamonds"

I liked Gap years ago like 13 but I have not shopped there in several years
I love their new ads with Caroline and the Gossip Girl cast but still those scarves are not for me..their Euro collection sounds nice they should release it in the USA

The price isnt too bad and some of there pieces from the Euro collection i like alot.

Okay, I went in there this past weekend for the first time in a while. I was pleasantly suprised by some of the jackets, sweaters and pants. The shapes were current and not quite as bland as I remembered. They did have the classic v-necks and crewnecks which I expect. I may put a couple of things on my Christmas wish list. I really want a pair of the crochet booties to wear around the house.

I've always loved GAP sweaters. I never found their pants to fit me right and their basic clothing is somewhat boring, but their sweaters are what I really love. Mine have lasted a long time, fit just right, are comfy, and super cute. I'm a big fan of huge classic comfy sweaters though and that might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I have never step out of GAP with any merchandise in my hands. Their clothes are targeted towards the mass and don't tingle the toes of us with a sweet tooth for fashionable clothes.

what i don't understand is why they hang huge posters in their display windows. you can't see inside the store because of them.

at first i thought maybe it was to obscure the lack of customers.
but now i'm just irritated that i can't see at a glance if there's anything interesting inside.
maybe they just want their money's worth with their advertising?...

whatever the reason, it's mighty annoying.

the gap to me takes me back when i was a kid.. my parents would take us shopping, and it would usually be straigh to the gap. i dont wanna wear the same thing i wore when i was a kid.

i dont like the gap one bit.

^^ I cosign that. I hate the Gap and now that Patrick Robinson is at the helm, I know I my feelings won't change for a while!

They carry great socks that last at least three years, but that's about it.

dont get me wrong.. i have gap in my closet, random things.. but really.. gap is just old navy merc. with gap tags.

be serious.

I beg to differ. I suppose because I actually used to work for the company. I used my gap discount far more often than at old navy. Gap makes some really good clothes they're just scared to take risk. Men's skinny jeans can only be found at their flagship stores... as well as other items that I think should be available at all stores and I must admit their clothing is overpriced by 10 to 20 dollars... I wait til it goes on sale...

The clothes are "good" just not interesting one bit.

That's the fun part to me anyway... I have to make it interesting. I don't make much money at all so I have to work with what I've got. I purchased this beige jacket from them last spring on clearance. I wore it back to the store paired with a striped t from brown sound, along with a blue old navy blazer and stonewash jeans i made into cutoff's also from gap and they were like where did you get that jacket from? And I pointed to the clearance rack. I found that highly amusing.

I haven't stepped into a GAP store in forever, but in general am not a fan of their stuff. Like many others on here, I really hate the fit (boxy, vanity sized like crazy, wide). I can see how their basics could be paired with more interesting pieces from other places, but for me I'd rather by basics by another company that fits me better personally.
When I was a kid, lots of the other kids would shop at the GAP (some of them had entire families dressed head to toe in GAP-ugh, lol)..My parents just got me stuff from Marshall's and Filenes' Basement. Back then I was jealous of kids in GAP clothes, but now I don't think I missed much!
Anyone see the "For Kids by Kids" thing at the Onion? http://www.theonion.com/content/video/gap_unveils_new_for_kids_by_kids

Of the 3 related stores (TG, ON, BR), I'll stay with BR

Of the three store brands owned by Gap, Inc., "The Gap," "Banana Republic," and "Old Navy," my own tastes (and need for good work/office pieces) lean toward BR. The Gap, Inc.'s 2006 Annual Report (See: http://gapinc.com/public/documents/GPS_AR_06.pdf ), reveals that corporate management realizes that the Gap and Old Navy stores need some fixing, although the Gap and Old Navy stores bring in far more revenue for the parent company than Banana Republic (See: http://gapinc.com/public/documents/GPS_Quarterly_Sales.pdf ), which they apparently believe is on a more solid track.

I personally like the selection at Banana Republic (although the quality of some items from Vietnam last year, was not up to their usual standards). As to the sweatshop problems, ... it may well be that for any major clothing maker, the entire point of having factories in Asia is to dramatically lower labor costs, which by definition means tiny wage-scales, no unions, no health plans, sweatshop conditions, "accidental" addition of lead to baby-chewable products, etc. Is there an asian / offshore / 3rd-world factory that is not a sweatshop?

Eventually, as market economists argue, market momentum globally will push toward higher pay and better conditions in the low labor-cost countries, but "eventually" is how far away?

This thread has a ton of posts, so if the above repeats someone else's analysis of matters corporate, my apologies! (this is my first post in tFS! Yaay!)

^ i'm surprised that the gap brings in the most revenue, as you say. i thought i read somewhere that they were performing very poorly?
(also, welcome to tfs!)

i went into the store today. things looked pretty cute, i thought.

lots of cute designs and colors. there was a nautical theme with the new stuff placed at the front of the store.
fabrics were still gap-quality, so-so. ok for the price, i guess.

i felt moved to try only one thing, though, a jersey dress with pleats at the bodice. it fit surprisingly well through the shoulders. i liked the touch with the side pockets. but i didn't get it. on sale, maybe. ^_^

does anyone know if the stuff under patrick robinson is already coming out in the stores? the things there looked better than they have in a while.

I rechecked my post after your surprise at the gap bringing in the most revenue, and the sales figures for North America for the three stores in 2006, showed Old Navy bringing in $6 billion, the Gap bringing in $5 billion and BR bringing in $2 billion in sales. This makes sense if sales volumes were larger in the store (Old Navy) that typically had the lower prices.

I think the stress of making that first-ever post had me wrapped up in a misread of the numbers!!

Considering their sales numbers for all three stores are in the billions, it may be safe to say that all their stores are surviving. (I could personally make do with even a mere $1 billion, if I were forced to!)

In Long Beach, all three stores are lined up within one block on 2nd Street. Invariably, it's the compelling BR window display that draws me there first, passing over the other two.
