Gucci F/W 2021.22 by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

There's been a couple of unexpected partnerships with Gucci's F/W 2021. First, was the Balenciaga "collab" and now Mert & Marcus is photographing the campaigns--both of which ended up working really well. The campaign is fantastic, mainly due to the beautiful Kristen McMenamy.

I absolutely love this campaign for the more I see it! Fantastic, who would’ve thought Alessandro’s Gucci would’ve partnered with M&M to create a beautiful ad!

They found each other. Just like in any other their editorial for Vogue or any previous campaign under Michele - pretentious and unnecessary big casting, overdone styling and no focus on someone or something.

Klein would have done this better

Kristen is totally serving and I am totally here for it.

Wearing fleet Ilya harness and cap (they made ones like this 15 years now) grab a tag gucci and make some shots with it - not enough to bring bdsm vibe, sorry. There is some shoots with very very vaguely resembling of kinkiness but that’s like 3 out of 30 and the whole concept falls apart. There is no connection between models, I don’t see a storytelling here (supposed to be some bourgeoise weird kinky mansion or something) most of models lacks any kind of sexiness, rootstein mannequins look more vivid than them. Kristen save this a lil but but her storyline isn’t about bdsm either, she is standing apart in this campaign.
I guess I would never accept Alessandro’s brand vision. Gucci for me is Tom Ford/ Mario Testino / Carine Roitfled. Period.

It's nice to see some Gucci work outside of the usual Luchford. Kristen's shots are by far the strongest.

I’m not entirely sold on this, but the entire set is considerably better than the first few shots that were posted. I do think that most of this look like a W Magazine editorial. Many of the shots are simply not strong enough to stand out on their own. I blame that entirely on the weak cast. It’s no match for Glen Luchford campaigns or that stunning S/S20 campaign by Lanthimos, but it’s an improvement over the past year.

Love a bunch of shots here especially Kristens obviously. I'll pass on the film thank you, M&M couldn't edit a decent film if their life depended on it, its really a skill they don't master like many other photogs ( Im looking at you I&V ).
Just another bunch of moving editorial photos stringed together with no eye for storytelling or cinematic cohesion. Worst of all, these awkward teens might capture that fantasy bdsm vibe in a still. As soon as they move we see the dressed-up children they really are.

Hire Kristen and you'll get great shots, but reliance on the McMenamy magic can only take you so far, if the rest of your campaign comprises a bunch of stilted poses by people who don't look capable of tying their own shoelaces, never mind whatever else is on the BDSM menu for the night.

Its refreshing to see some complexity back in at least one collection.

Must admit that this is the first Gucci campaign thread that I've been compelled to revisit since Fall 2019. What a pleasant surprise to see Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott back shooting a Gucci campaign (might start reminiscing over the campaigns under Frida Giannini later).
