Also, gucci's president and chief executive officer Mark Lee is stepping down Dec. 31. It's on WWD but I can only access the article from school and I'm at home right now. But anyways, things are definitely not good at Gucci.
I don't think Gucci needs Tom Ford but they need someone who understands what Gucci is. Gucci is supposed to be about luxury and until Frida understands that Gucci's numbers will continue to suffer. There is nothing luxurious about this collection. The fabrics, the cuts, trimming, details, NOTHING. H&M, Top Shop and Forever 21 could probably knock this off by the end of the week and have it out on the floor and windows by next week.
This is all that I keep saying. Gucci is supposed to be the epitome of Italian luxury and they need someone capable to do this. Not Michael Kors luxury, but a true understanding of it. In my mind I would like to think Hedi Slimane and Gucci would work so beautifully. Or maybe Marios Schwab would be interesting. I cannot think of any other designers capable of handling Gucci at the moment.
^^I think Slimane would be interesting. I think he could work wonders with Gucci...he would make it darker, slicker, more luxurious...I think he'd be great.
CEO stepping down sounds like good news (normally a change in the executive side translates into and entire reform also on the creative side)
While being the most desired brand (as was published recently) may seem a fantastic form of advertisement for any company, when it's the luxury market we are talking about i think it couldnt be worse news. When everyone in this globalized planet sees your products as some sort of standard of what Expensive means, i think you really have to consider how "new-money" you've become and how much may that scare your most established/elitist clientele.
It reminds me of Dior's brand strategy of being over with the logo and starting to build up a better reputation, older and more loyal clients (the one dior really had in the first place). When you are selling hundreds of t-shirts in one day with your logo printed big and bold on the chest, you really have to consider if it's fast money that you want, or if you'd better think in terms of your future benefits and reputation.
About THE next designer... i'd love to see Hedi of course. but the fact that we havent seen his work for women yet makes me unsure about it. Maybe i'd like to see his own signature first, without being restricted by any kind of heritage, brand dna, or whatever...
i really like the Marios Schwab idea!
I think Proenza Schouler would do a good job but its just a guess but they are much better than Frida any day
as for proenza schouler... i hardly like their own work. i dont even know if i'd like them better than frida . as i see it, they havent yet built a strong core that defines their aesthetic well and that makes them recognizable... so embracing such a big project would probably overwhelm them.
The attitude towards gucci is very negative in general these days and for such an splendid label, i really think it is a shame. The collections may not be that great, and not even the bags seem that appealing... but i like to think that they still do some things right. and last winter's mens looked quite cool, and the shoes still turn heads around, and above all, i like to think that gucci still makes lots of money with it's "hot" logo bags. And being a big company inside the PPR group, it sure helps some of the other non-profitable labels from struggling (think YSL who is recovering little by little). So whenever you see a gucci collection you dont like, remind yourselves it's for the greater good... if there's no gucci, we wouldnt get all the great work Pilati has to offer
